@Tupac Ain't No Bitxh! she was played by Zora Bishop and modled after her with some basic Mediterranean features. She's got a similar complexion to Kassandra from Odyssey. Her clothing is stereotypical Egyptian. I wouldn't say she looked what we'd consider black. She looks like a white girl who got a tan on vacation then saw a spirit halloween egyptian costume and threw it on in the game. That’s been going on for centuries. Shit man, we are missing massive chunks of Egyptian history as they literally would destroy and rewrite their own history. They would use clay and do a positive process to add it to the face of the stones. Each dynasty wanted to prove they were the only ones. So often, the older raised text was chiseled off. It’s wasn’t until Ramsey II, I believe, that they started engraving their history into the stone instead of using clay on top of it. We are still rewriting history all the time. As far as for a narrative…. Conservatives in the USA are doing it actively now around the civil war or shit January 6th. It was done by the Chinese Communist Party, by the Soviet Union (and still being done by the Russians now.) Nazi Germany did it to establish their identity and claims to power. Mussolini consolidated Italy into a single identity from what had been disparate regions. Fascist Spain had done this as well. It’s very common. The only way to make the statement you made and not realize that it’s always been that way is to not have studied history at all. History and Culture as weapons in the hands of those who hold power.

Besides Ancient Egyptians were closely related to people who lived along the eastern Mediterranean. They also shared genetic material with residents of the Turkish peninsula at the time and Europe, according to genetic analysis of mummies. It’s well documented if you bothered to look into it. They’ve had almost no subsaharan genes. People migrated all through history. Or I should consider African, Asian and Arab imigrants invading Europe this days as colonisers? Get real!

@@Ika0713technically Alexandria where Cleopatra was born would be located in modern day Egypt. Egypt is in Africa. But importantly, even in your statement, there’s no definitive on Cleopatra (let alone every cleopatra) being “African” but that also means there’s no definitive on the alternative. I don’t grant Netflix much in the way of accuracy. They did just have a pseudo science documentary about Atlantis from a guy who isn’t a professional archaeologist. There is some active debate on a Cleopatra potentially have some Nubian ancestry and may have visually appeared that way. It’s minor evidence, but it’s still under study. It’s also fair to note, that part of the reason for that is because despite the depictions we have of the other Cleopatra’s, we are entirely lacking this one person’s images. Which does sound like history having been misconstrued by people who want to push a certain ideal. Also the definition of “white” shifts with the times. 100 years ago in the USA, the Irish were not regarded as true white. They werent seen as lesser whites, they were seen as something less than white, same with the Italians and Catalonians. The KKK, in an effort to exploit Italian/Irish hatred of black people, expanded their ranks to include them after membership to the hate group had dwindled. “White” is evolving and changing all the time. I doubt a person who prides themselves on being white would be able to identify a Macedonian from a Syrian. Cleopatra wasn’t “white,” they were Macedonian/Egyptian. She would not have called herself white (and not because she didn’t speak English.) Finally don’t misrepresent their argument. You accuse them of obsessing over a white person (see above,) but they were right to bring up a point on this matter. We aren’t discussing other queens, we are discussing Cleopatra(s.) Nobody here is rewriting history, we are discussing a debated topic and staying on topic.

Eh should have said "My grandpa said Cleo wasn't black". Much quicker, simpler and more trustworthy.

Why would anybody ever think that Cleopatra was _not_ white? The entire royalty of the oldest Egyptian empires were Afroasiatic, a mix from the Mesopotamians and North Africans. Sure, they had black slaves from the South, like Sudan and Eritrea, but the entire Mediterranean was dominated by the Phonecians, Greeks then Romans.

Besides it’s obvious with their art, ancient egyptians painted themselves as having redding skins. People who had darker skin tones , such as Nubians were painted dark

Will Durant made that assertion in his book Christ and Caesar. It’s ironic that Americans can’t understand how a different ethnic group will take over a language over time.

Egypt was more a part of the Middle East than the African continent, historically being part of the so-called fertile crescent.

All of this could have been so easily avoided if they just said that her being cast as black was to give a black actress an acting opportunity and not insisted it was historically accurate.

I don't have a problem with a black actress playing her, but let's not pretend that it's historically accurate.

I do have a problem with a black actress playing her, because the intent is to convince people she was black, which is a lie. Let us now cast a white woman as Martin Luther King Jr and see how that goes. She’d better win an Oscar for her “strength and courage”.
