Hi, this is Bey Logan, and I rarely participate in these kind of forums, but I feel, given the click bait title, and my responsibility for it, I really need to set the record straight concerning the incident described. I like and much respect Tommy Carruthers, he is definitely an awesome martial artist and I enjoyed the time we spent hanging out in Hong Kong, but still... Here's what actually happened between him and Donnie Yen. Tommy wrote to tell me that he was coming to Hong Kong, and I invited him to come to the premiere of the film 'SPL' AKA 'Kill Zone' at the Hong Kong Convention Centre. I felt it was fortunate he arrived in Hong Kong on the day of the screening, as Tommy would definitely enjoy the film. Of course, he is entitled to his own opinion about the movie, but most people felt that 'SPL' really took Hong Kong action cinema a step forward in terms of incorporating different ranges of combat, especially grappling, into its choreography. Tommy and his dear lady duly arrived at the theatre and I introduced them to Donnie and Sammo. I suppose I must be the person he describes as Donnie's 'manager'. Maybe Tommy forgot my name! It has been a very long time... Anyway, we sat and watched the movie and, afterwards, we all went to dinner at a Chinese restaurant. Tommy and his partner were seated with me at the same table as Donnie and Sammo. To kind of break the ice, I asked Tommy what he thought of 'SPL' and its action scenes and he loudly denounced it and them as unrealistic. How could two guys fight for as long as they did in the film? Donnie and I patiently explained that this was movie action, and not the same as what Tommy was teaching. Tommy seemed unconvinced by us, though, and, when he, I and his partner got coffee at the Portobello Cafe the next day, I suggested Tommy go back home, shoot some test footage with his students to show what style he thought would look good on camera, then send it to me. And I could show it to Donnie and Sammo. And then I never heard any more about it from Tommy. For the record, Donnie was never scared of Tommy Carruthers. I think if Donnie could make a film with Mike Tyson, he could probably make a film with anyone! I felt Tommy could perhaps have been a bit more diplomatic in those circumstances, but perhaps that's not his way. Anyway, that is what really happened. Obviously, Donnie went on to a great career, especially post 'Ip Man', as an action star, and Tommy remains highly regarded in Jeet Kune Do circles. I hope this clarifies things! - Bey

Wow. Was just thinking it was you whom he talked to. Glad you cleared that up. I think one of the reasons he didn't enjoy the choreography too much is because of the grappling incorporated in the film. From what I gather, Tommy feels that ground fighting of any kind is not worth training, because of fighting on the ground in the streets and so on. While I see his point, I definitely don't agree entirely. Whatever the case, I think it is pretty clear that he isn't as humble as some martial artists are, and that is fine. Yes...he is highly regarded in the JKD field and rightly so. Good on him. As far as click-bait titles go, I guess I don't blame viking samurai. He is trying to make his channel grow and he does try to get as many people on as he can. However I do see your point. I guess I just don't blame him. Hope all is well Bey. Just listened to the commentary for Fist of Fury you did. Always good to have on in the background when I'm relaxing. Take care.

Hi Bey, thanks so much for sharing and clarifying things! I'll do an update to this video and share your comment, as I like to get the other side and fuller picture to the story out there for the audience. Speaking of the audience, I do get quite a few requests to try and get you on the channel. Would you ever be interested in doing an interview? If so, please email me sometime at Realvikingsamurai@gmail.com ... I almost got another big name in the Hong Kong film industry (Mike Leeder) and exchanged a few emails, but that seems to have fallen through. Regardless, the fans would love to hear from someone who plays a huge role in Hong Kong cinema.

After reading and translating the news article from Hong Kong where Donnie Yen single handedly beat up a group of thugs harassing him and his woman at the time, I seriously doubt he’s afraid of him. I've always been very interested in JKD, and many years ago - after remembering a glowing review of his class by one of his students that I knew - I phoned Tommy and politely asked about the possibility of attending his classes, and what followed was a bizarre and deeply disappointing (short) phone call - where thy guy (who I assume was Tommy) on the other end of the line was pretty rude. He seemed really annoyed and his tone was almost paranoid about the fact I was calling him at the number on his business card that was given to me (even quizzing me about how I got it). He also asked me if I had any previous martial arts experience and when I said "yes, some when I was a young kid" he bluntly insisted (more than once) that: "like most folk who have trained in something else, you will likely not like my class, but if you are still interested I suppose you could come along one night if you must, but I still say that you probably wont take to it" (or very similar words to that effect - it was a long time ago). I was almost speechless and did not quite know what to say other than a blurted-out' thank you for your time' and 'goodbye'. Needless to say I did not go to his class. Which was a shame on so many levels as I am a supporter of what JKD stands for and I desperately wanted to avoid the typical type of classes you get in sports centres ten-a-penny, with belts dished out like sweeties for clunky, plastic, fake versions of Asian martial arts ...so I thought Carruthers' classes were just what I was looking for. Even when I watch his short, almost charmingly amateur videos now on KZitem (many years later) to me - aside from knowing-his-stuff - he seems like a really decent, down-to-earth guy (who is easy to get on with), especially when compared to the rude, annoyed, suspicious-of-me Tommy who I spoke to on the phone all those years ago.

5:28 dude I totally agree. I never watch MMA either because it doesn’t impress me. I’ve never seen a master martial artist in MMA. I mean, none of them have even produced a MMA prodigy, or a MMA master or a unbeatable MMA fighter. Like Frank Dukes was supposed to have been able to produce one like his master before him right? Otherwise he’s not real Bruce Lee could train somebody to be a real, MMA champion so why can’t anyone else? 6:36 it won’t be rubbish after I add in wrestling to it. If someone wants to beat me to it, sure go for it and add wrestling to JKD but that was going to be my contribution , it already has submissions from judo and other styles I would imagine. If you can’t develop a champion fighter or master martial, artist or unbeatable fighter, you can at least be an inspiration for one. But you have to be real not fake. You have to really do your street fights and your martial arts and train lake a real hero and do the things that scare you but you have to be truthful and not be a liar. Maybe you can jump on the bandwagon with me: I’ve been studying JKD since I was 11 years old and peekaboo boxing since I was 22 or 23 years old. I am 34 right now. The two people I admire the most in fighting are Bruce Lee, and Cus D’Amato however, my base is wrestling. Also, like Bruce Lee, I admire Muhammad Alis foot work A lot of people have a base in MMA. I really like catch wrestling with my wrestling, and judo throws with my wrestling take downs. I prefer it over kajukenbo because I’m a Bruce Lee fanatic: so JKD incorporates everything and excludes nothing. Whereas kajukenbo is only five styles excluding wrestling and JKD. Had they Inc.used JKD they would have a all encompassing system within their system no disrespect to T.T. By jumping on the bandwagon, I mean, get in my shoes, wrestle, freestyle, wrestling, and go to a pin not to take down. Maybe wrestle freestyle in The open division. But as a JKD guy, use your power, hand forward and jab,, hook, left Cross or left Staight (Gervonta Davis has a great overhand left hook for a 54 or 55 guy in height. And sidekick. Flying sidekicks would be the greatest like Fabricio Werdum.? a sidekick that knocks somebody down. Sidekick that just destroy somebody’s knee. Make them outlaw that move you know? Maybe Donnie should do 1 movie less, reinvent himself add add some cool new moves and then come up again , as I know he can pull this off...I hope they give him good new perspective in John Wick 4, like good new original combo's moves for him besides what he's got.

My immediate thought is that this message was sent three years AFTER the 'SPL' premiere and (a) I'm obviously joking, and (b) its not DONNIE being scared of Tommy. The way the story sounded in Tommy's interview was that Donnie was intimidated by him when they met in person on the night of the premiere, which wasn't the case. Been looking into this no-namer... To put it simply: The guy is a worshipper of Bruce Lee and despises martial arts action movies in general. He has publicly stated that martial arts actors like Sammo Hung, Jackie Chan, Van Damme, Jet Li, and Donnie Yen haven't filled Bruce's shoelaces. On top of that, he wants to see real JKD onscreen. Verdict: Tomboy simply doesn't understand the true essence of stage combat (or the film medium as a whole). I guess he wanted to take a shoot of fame by defaming Donnie, a big action star in Asia, purposely making him look bad with his JKD. Stage combat is all about friendly collaborations between people involved, not about fighting people for real. Tom should stick to training JKD and avoid trying out showbiz. EDIT: Just saw the video of Bey Logan's response to Tomboy's opinion on SPL. Wow. The guts to say that in front of Donnie and yet the cowardice of not standing up to it by promising to send that test footage of Tomboy's interpretation of grappling to Donnie through Bey only to duck both of them in the end 😂🤦♂

The only suddenness would be when he suddenly hit the deck. I like Tommy, I like watching him, he's a good 'shadow boxer' and showman....but that's where his expertise ends.

I a sure you he's not doing jkd. Far from the stuff Bruce did back in the day. These guys get on my nerves with fake jkd. Jackie Chan can beat this guy easily. Another thing Ted Wong only mimics the moves Bruce did. The only one who did it like Bruce was Joe Lewis Full contact Ted Wong Dan Inosanto was not fighters. Neither was 80% of these other students teaching. I wish they were still young enough to fight i can prove my point easy. No disrespect to them but you all are so desperate to find Bruce skills you all go so far credit these guy's. Jessie, Burt, Demile was the street fighters the rest was just students. Now this guy take lesson from Ted who only RANK level 2. Which it would be maybe a red belt if that. Come on Now, don't do that to Bruce he deserves better. I love Tommy. Deff one the best jkd guys out there. But his views on systema I feel are a little bit closed minded. People like Martin Wheeler who are highly regarded for there skill by many known martial artists like Dan Inosanto bear testament to systemas legitimate. I remember in a video I watched a few years back Dan him self said that Tommy is the closest thing there is to a modern Bruce Lee. If Dan gave this kind of credit to Tommy and praised Martin's skill with systema it makes systema a very legitimate art. Dan said that he's impressed with Martin's knowledge on where the body is and how efficient his movement is. That when Martin hits you he hits with serious power. That he knows there are alot of videos out there that make systema look like it's not real but it's just something you have to feel. Once you feel it then you'll see what's it's all about. Systema also does not take 10 years to grasp. It's a system that's has know forms and focuses on fluid of movement. In fact alot of there training is given over to physical conditioning and mastering breathing techniques. It's a system that dapples heavy into human anatomy and focuses on leverage and and relaxed movement to be effective in combat. Just like Jkd it has many phony instructors that falsely represent it.

JKD is interesting in that while I understand the historical importance and need for documentation, the martial artists who only teach the curriculum that Bruce taught in the 60’s/70’s as the “ultimate system” somewhat undermine his philosophy on martial arts. JKD was an ever evolving concept and this has been demonstrated in practice by Dan Inosanto who kept adding, exploring different systems. In addition just look at the immense resume of talent that spawned from under him. If Bruce lived beyond 32 years old I highly doubt he would have been stagnant and stopped researching.

Dan , though he is a great martial Artist made the mistake of exploring different systems to use them as weapons to beat specialists at their own game but Dan was misunderstanding Bruce's INTENTION when Bruce was researching styles. Bruce was doing this not to accumulate styles, Bruce was researching to understand styles in order to PRE-EMPT THEM with SIMPLICITY....BIG difference....One is adding on to create un necessary complexity,,,The other is SUBTRACTING to improve FUNCTIONALITY.

I don't know what went down between Donnie and Tommy, but Donnie is for real. According to news reports by Hong Kong news channels in the late 1990s, Yen was at a nightclub with his then-girlfriend, Joey Meng. Inside the nightclub, Meng was harassed by a troublesome gang that had taken an interest in her. Yen warned them to leave her alone, but they persisted in causing trouble. As Yen and Meng left the club, the gang followed and attacked Yen. Yen beat up several members of the gang who were later hospitalized.

That’s funny- I met Donnie Yen back in Boston when I walked in to take a look around his mother’s academy. He had the same humble, down to earth approach to me, some guy off the street. He wasn’t scared. Just a true and humble human being. I was lucky to have met GM Bow Sim Mark that same day. She too carried herself as the genuine human being. I was truly humbled by their realness and humility.
