Let's hope debates like this point to the way things can go in the future and many thanks to both participants for making it possible and practical on this occasion. So according to Khalil, what Quran 4:157,158 is REALLY saying is: And for their saying, "We killed the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, the Messenger of God' -- yet it was not they who killed him or crucify him, it was only made to appear so to them that they were the ones who killed him. That's totally different from the version he had in his slide which says: "yet they did not kill him, neither crucified him, it was only made to appear so to them." Khalil's claim is that "it" (the thing that was made to appear so to them) is agency instead of the act itself (of killing and crucifying). I struggle to see how "agency" is the thrust of Quran 4:153-158 and not the fact that Jesus was not killed or crucified by the group of Jews mentioned in the preceding verses. He shows other parts of the Quran to support this view but I think this is more an issue of language. How is it linguistically justified that from the statement "they did not X, it was made to appear", we are to interpret this as: "it was not their agency that resulted in X, it was made to appear that it was their agency that resulted in X" rather than the more straightforward (and I'd say linguistically natural) interpretation: "they did not X, X was made to appear"?
@sedmercado24

Moreover what reasons do we have to think that Quran 3:55 is referring to Jesus’ death by crucifixion instead of not, such as death by natural means? It is the Christian who claims that God sent his son to die for our sins on the cross. So only if you start with that Christian perspective then you could say that Quran 3:55 is talking about God causing Jesus to die by crucifixion. Without that, what warrant from the Quran that God causing Jesus to die means death by crucifixion?
@UlucDemirsoy
Жыл бұрын
@@sedmercado24I think the witness of history is more reliable than later and contradictory traditions. If you inspect the substitution narratives in tafsir, they really seem like they are just experimental interpretations which might make sense of that verse rather than trustworthy and established traditions. And regarding the verse itself, it is linguistically ambiguous to begin with. "It was made to appear so to them" contains a hapax legomenon shubbiha (form 2 verb of the root shin-ba-ha) and never appears elsewhere to give us a clue about its precise meaning. So deriving a fully fleshed out theology from this type of language is hard to begin with. Considering that the verse doesn't necessarily rule out the interpretation of Dr. Khalil as you pointed out, relying on the context and other verses along with history isn't off the mark.

This was a fantastic conversation. Growing up along with Nabeel, we were taught the swoon theory; the crucifixion was at the center of the Ahmadiyya belief; it’s interesting because it continued to be the central issue for him when he became Christian; I think what Dr Khalil presented here from an academic and intra-textual perspective the perspective that Jesus was crucified and died according to the Quran was a sound presentation. I would even have to say that this is now the position that makes the most sense.
@ReasononFaith

I definitely have to watch this. You've got me curious if the position espoused here from Dr. Andani is both a crucifixion (hanging) and a death (by crucifixion), since our past Ahmadiyya Muslim perspective was of course, crucifixion (just the hanging part, but not death) and a later death (natural causes, decades later). I guess I will need to watch this stream to find out!

Wonderful and interesting debate/discussion!! Now that Khalil and David agreed that what the Quran is actually saying is that Christ died by crucifixion, can we now have a debate/discussion on what the crucifixion means for both Christians and Muslims, so that we can assess which theology makes more sense?
@MortenBendiksen

Islam teaches that Jesus was the Messiah, but I don't know what that means to them. Islam teaches that Jesus came specifically to clear up some misunderstandings the Jews had. But instead of that what was left in his wake, was more confusion, extreme amounts of idolatry, and this is primarily caused by the deception of the cross which Allah made to be. So the promised Messiah was basically one big cosmic lie, or at the least failure on the part of Allah it seems. Or if not a failure, he meant to deceive most of humanity through it. Christianity teaches that Jesus was crucified because, given our state, that is what is required somehow to get us out of it. There are different takes of it, but all agree the end effect is to save us from our state of sin somehow. All agree this is the promise fulfilled of the Messiah, the light promised to come through Abrahams seed, to have the world know of the Lord, which seems to have come true.

My friend, no Muslim teaches anything good concerning Christ’s resurrection unless they’re teaching that he died and was risen from the grace by God himself. THAT is the way to be forgiven in the next life. I pray that hells gates are open for our Muslim brothers to accept Christ in the after life. I personally believe that “good” Muslims will go to Abraham’s bosom, a place of comfort and relaxation, so that they can hear the fullness of the gospel and escape “hell” and enter the kingdom. I believe God will give them this chance.

In this verse Allah's caused Jesus to die and purify him from those who denied the truth ,it is refers to his crucifixion, which caused his death, At the height of his ministry and miracles, many Jews came to believe in Jesus as the Messiah, Jewish rabbi's feared Jesus because of his growing followers. With the help of Judas Iscariot, Roman soldiers arrested Jesus, and He was put on trial for claiming to be the king of the Jews. According to Roman law, the punishment for rebellion against the king was death by crucifixion.The Roman governor Pontius Pilate was reluctant regarding the punishment for Jesus. @@Michalis_Veniopoulos Again, the word 'elohim' which means god is also used for Angels in the OT and for prophet judges in the psalms but also for jesus in the NT. Yet no angel or prophet of god is God the father. A title shared doesn't mean they have the same essence or status. And it does not change anything whether the septuagint writers used kyrios for God, what is relevant is the original text where it uses the Name of the One God Yah. It also could be that they didn't want to mention Yahs name, as it is in jewish tradition they call him Adonai which literally means Lord or Master as a title of respect, exactly as in 'kyrios' instead of Yah**. This proves especially on an academic perspective nothing about Jesus supposed divinity but contrary shows the jewish tradition of not mentioning Gods personal name by using the word 'master/lord' instead.

@@Michalis_Veniopoulos Well that is nothing but conjecture. Bending Gods words and making God out of a man. How do you explain the following verse then? Are there multiple Gods? Or multiple Jesuses according to your theology? “I said, ‘You are “gods"; you are all sons of the Most High.’ (Psalm 82:6) And do you notice how Judges are called 'gods'? And how it says 'Sons' right after that? This applies also for Jesus. He was not the only one called 'god' in the sense of a vicegerent. Even the greek translation which you can look up in the iternet can use the word 'théos' as 'vicegerent' and not God the Father. Jesus even explains himself why he is called that way. JESUS HIMSELF: “We are not stoning You for any good work,” said the Jews, “but for blasphemy, because You, who are a man, declare Yourself to be a god.” 34Jesus replied, “Is it not written in your Law: ‘I have said you are gods’d? 35 If *he called them gods to whom the word of God came* -and the Scripture cannot be broken- 36then what about the One whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world? The entirety of Islam has roots in Ebionite Christianity, which strayed from scriptural doctrine and proclaimed that Jesus was not literally the Son of God. You can see how that one critical difference between Ebionite Christianity and other sects transformed into a totally different religion in which they deny the divinity of Jesus Christ. They bended God, or Allah to suit their own will rather than bending to God's supreme will. The result is constant terrorism, sexism, shariah law and seperation from God.

Christianity is a pagan religion invented by the Romans and is not one of the teachings of Jesus, peace be upon him. Christianity is based on four books of unknown authors, is not a revelation from God, and contains many contradictions and distortions. Paul never met Jesus Christ Rather, he claimed without any evidence and created teachings that are completely contrary to the teachings of Jesus, peace be upon him, who obeyed the laws of the Torah and the law of Moses. David Wood says that God deceived the disciples of Christ, and this is a very absurd argument, because the disciples of Christ never believed in the Trinity, original sin, and the doctrine of salvation, nor did they believe that Jesus was originally God. Rather, they believed in him as a prophet Therefore, the essence of Christ's crucifixion does not hold any meaning for followers of Christ, nor is it a very fundamental issue.

Christianity is based on a particulars event in history. Paul says that’s tells us that if Jesus (as) didn’t die and rise again then the Christian faith is in vain. The Quran is telling us that we should not base our religion on a historical event. We we’re not witnesses to these events and we don’t have any first hand accounts. The Quran is telling us to base our religion on the Fitrah and not unverifiable historical events. “Tell the people of the book Abraham (as) was upon the faith before the scripture.” Abraham (as) was righteous because of his Fitrah not because of his historical beliefs.

As I understand, from Biblical scholarship, the only eye witnesses for the event were three women but according to the Judaic rules then, they were not allowed to witness from up close, and saw it from really afar - as per rules then. So who was crucified? Some Western Biblical scholars present the view that we cannot be sure, or that, a possible crucifixion was staged and he was brought down (remember Joseph of Arimathea?), explaining his apparent resurrection! Keep Biblical scholarship in mind and future developments on the issue.

Jesus of Nazareth is of the Holy Spirit and a Virgin. Jesus is not a Son of Adam like the rest of Humanity. Jesus is the only one born into this world without Sin and lived a Perfect life. He in Jesus anger he never sinned. His anger was in Righteousness. Jesus is the Righteous One. All the Son of Adam has inherited Adam's sinful nature. For all have sinned and have fallen short to the Glory of God, the Bible says. We need to be cleansed of our Unrighteousness. And we are cleansed of our Unrighteousness through the Messiah. He is the Redeemer for both Jews and Gentiles, he is the Last Prophet. When Jesus Resurrected from the Grave we now have Victory over sin. Because Jesus defeated Death and Hades. Jesus endured God's Wrath on the Cross when he placed all of our sins, Transgressions and iniquities on himself. He died the death we all deserve. Because we owe God death! Jesus could lay His Life down for the World because he is NOT a Son of Adam, he is the Son of God. He is the Passover Lamb of God. Jesus is known as the Logos, the Eternal Word (Speech) before he became Flesh. The Word (the Logos) has always existed before Creation and is of the Same Exact Divine Essence as God himself. In the Quran it says Allah Directed "HIS WORD" to Mary and a Soul and Spirit was created from Him. Even the Quran tells us Jesus is the Word of God and Allah sent HIS WORD to Mary. John 1:1 ESV [1] In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, _and the Word was God._

So, Christians believe that Jesus was crucified and cursed under the law, which means that Jesus could not be the messiah who was to fulfill the law (Matt 5:17-20). One cannot fulfill a the law that curses him. Muslims believe that Jesus was a prophet and the Messiah and therefore, he was neither cursed nor crucified.

The reason Jesus is the Messiah is because he will bring the kingdom on earth for muslims. You must understand that in Islam anyone who believes in the true revelations from God is a muslim. So we consider those Jews who followed Moses muslims. Those that claimed they followed him but didnt we dont claim they are muslims. The same for all the other followers of Prophets sent to the Jews. When Jesus was sent to the Jews, there were Jews that followed him and Jews that rejected him. The Jews that followed him we consider Muslims, the Jews that rejected him we consider Kaffirs. If all the Jews accepted Jesus they all would be considered as Muslims. If they had accepted him, he would have brought about that kingdom in that time, but they rejected him, so the kingdom is postponed. When Jesus comes back he will establish it.

Isn't saying the truth is antisemitic antisemitic? (By the way, if it's antisemitic to suggest that "the jews" - as Saint John says - were proud of Jesus' death, then the gospels, composed by semitic people, are antisemitic: "21 The governor said to them in reply, “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” They answered, “Barabbas!” 22 * Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus called Messiah?” They all said, “Let him be crucified!” 23 But he said, “Why? What evil has he done?” They only shouted the louder, “Let him be crucified!” 24 * When Pilate saw that he was not succeeding at all, but that a riot was breaking out instead, he took water and washed his hands in the sight of the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this man’s blood. Look to it yourselves.” 25 And the whole people said in reply, *“His blood be upon us and upon our children.”"* Mathew 27,21-25.) (Their will to share their guilt with their children doesn't entail that their fault has really been genetically transmitted to the latter. I'm with Saint John Chrysostomus here, those jews have no power over God about who He's going to save and who He's going to condemn, and many jews have converted to Christianity since the crucifixion. Yet, it does show their pride on their actions.)

How good it would have been to have Billy Graham step in at that moment to put into words the blessed hope we see in Jesus to go to the cross for lost and hopeless sinners. To make a way that leads back to the Father who is willing and ready to adopt repentant sinners into his family and give them power to live in ever increasing measures of victory over sin, the way of the world and Satan. The Oxford Dictionary of the Jewish Religion confirms that in Jewish idiom “Son of God” is clearly metaphorical. In previous Scriptures, pious believers were called “sons of God.” It was not only Jesus who was “son of God” in the bible; other Prophets were also called “son of God.” For example: David: Psalm 2:7. I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. Solomon: 2 Samuel 7:13-14. He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever. I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men: Adam: Luke 3:38. Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God. God has no real son. Jesus, David, Solomon, etc. were only close servants of God

And if he sees chapter 65:4 of the Qur'an, interprets it as allowing you to have sex with a 5 year old, and chooses to side with a human being who says you have to at least wait till puberty, does he do shirk? Because he puts the man above Almighty God? Tbh I'd do the same. Actually no I wouldn't because even having sex at puberty is dangerous. You have to wait till at least early 20s.

why do you need allah when you have the black stone to forgive sins.. lol O Abu abdur-Rahman, why do I only see you touching these two corners?" Who said it should be? It can never be because when jesus was on the cross, he shouts: "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?". Muslims do not believe in the trinity, and neither to jews. God is One, not his own father and his own son. 🤷🏻♀️

@@govendkhalit714 haha. This question also to be asked for many times from Muslims. "why hast thou forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46, KJV). This cry is a fulfillment of Psalm 22:1, one of many parallels between that psalm and the specific events of the crucifixion. You will never know it, because in Quran there's no prophecy.

David makes fun of the Quran talking about Mohammad splitting the moon. SAME David has no problem about his god stopping the Sun in the middle of the sky for a day. Find the KZitem Video: "Moon split in 2? David Wood's Argument from Silence." LOL

@Patrick DANG, you Xtians don't know your bible. Joshua 10:13 12 Then spake Joshua to the Lord in the day when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon. 13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.

what a troll there is all kinds of proof that hundreds of people saw Jesus after he was crucified and yes he said that he was the son of god and part of the trinity.

It's subtle but the argument is slowly shifting... in the opening moments it's became perfectly clear that Muslims can't explain away the crucifixion, they have to accept it as fact first and then try to wrap their theology around that fact
@nunya54
Жыл бұрын
There's no reason for anyone to accept the crucifixion as fact because there is no evidence Jesus was killed. The evidence speaks against it being true including the history that none of the followers of Jesus during that time or in the first century believed Jesus was, in fact, killed. Then there is all the other evidence in the story and what we know that just doesn't make sense; it was clearly the gospel writers writing stories, going beyond their authority writing what they could not verify (or perhaps just making up what they liked to take people away from the monotheism of Jesus into polytheism which is what modern Christianity is).

What about another issue for debate: Did the Prophet Muhammad arrive in Jerusalem riding the Burak, ataching it/he/she in the Western Wall (he could'nt find another place, exactly the most sacred placed for the Jewish People . this is why the Western Wall is callad Al Burak and is an islamic property, according to the Islam), ascended to the skies, met all the Prophet, etc etc etc, all this in a blink of an eye. Waiting for comments. Daniel from Israel

I just have to say, Capturing Christianity is what I want in interviews when Pints With Aquinas rambles too much (not to degrade Matt Fradd's show, but I enjoy this one's focus), especially since Mr. Bertuzzi will be Catholic in a few days. Also, this does not strike me as remotely anti-semitic.
