So the MSRP of a base 7-series in 1995 was $65,900. In 2019 dollars, that's over $112k. If the car is mechanically sound and still in good condition, I say hell yes, $15k is a great deal. Plus, it's a great-looking car.
@amandalee4735
4 жыл бұрын
Original value has no relevance to the value of a car many years down the road. Bmw/Mercedes/Maserati has been proving that forever with cars that MSRP for 100k+ then sell for $10,000 5-10 years down the road regardless of being low mileage and good condition.
@therevx5225

Amanda Lee very good statement. Just because you see a broken down unreliable $70,000 car today, that doesn't mean it's worth more than $5,000.

I’m starting to see lots of 15 year old Luxury cars at Pick and Pull ! 75 thousand dollar new ! Now they get couple thousand selling parts! 😎
@rars0n
4 жыл бұрын
@@amandalee4735 Sure, but my point was that someone paid a lot more for that car originally. If it's a car you really want, and it's in almost-new condition, then $15k is pretty cheap when the car originally retailed for over 4 times as much (not adjusted for inflation). A lot of those cars plummet in value because the technology inside them ages so rapidly, and becomes problematic. That isn't really the case with this era of car. It's got classic styling and enthusiast appeal. It's not just another generic 5-10 year-old luxury car with a spotty maintenance history.
@amandalee4735
4 жыл бұрын
Adam Baldwin I get what you’re saying and I agree that if it’s a vehicle someone really wants and plans on holding onto for a long time, the 15k is worth spending. But in any other circumstance 15k for the vehicle shown in this video regardless of miles, condition, and repair records is WAY too much regardless of what someone originally paid the the vehicle. Edit: I know Hoovie buys these vehicles for our entertainment just as much as his own. I just don’t want the younger viewers getting the wrong idea and start thinking a mid 90s 7 series is worth this much.

I like it, buddy. It pisses me off when people moan about the cost of a vehicle and its repairs beyond its value. I pay the repairs for cars and bikes that aren't worth it because I like the car or bike. I bought a new bike about ten years ago and I took it to work to show my colleagues after I'd owned it for a few weeks and I'd already put over a thousand miles on it and the first thing one of them said was "Jesus, aren't you worried about the depreciation?" No. I bought it to ride the damn thing. I didn't buy it so the next owner gets a nice low mileage vehicle. I'm a rider/driver, not an owner.

A newer car will depreciate faster, cost more to insure and (depending on where you live) might cost more in annual license plate / road taxe fees. $15K for "old", after addressing some of the endemic issues, may be an overall better choice - if you drive it for a few years.

In that time I have spent $6000 chasing oil leaks, replacing rear wheel bearings, the servotronic solenoid, light control module, oil changes, filters, etc etc etc. But in that time it has accrued 133,000 miles as a daily driver, and I have had no major problems. It is the best driver-oriented car I have ever owned. We also own a 2001 IL and a 2001 325ci convertible. We enjoy all three cars immensely and would buy any of them again. I have considered buying a 2001 750IL but so far have resisted temptation. So far. Update in January 2024: 156,378 miles on the Sport now, and we still own and drive all three.

I own a 2001 BMW 740iL configured in the same color, wheels, interior, etc. I have upgraded the suspension to "sport" specs over the years as I just love this car. Mine has 155K on it with only the Vanos system being rebuilt as a precaution at the 100k mark. I am fully aware of BMW well earned reputation for being maintenance monsters.....I guess I got one of few made that has held up well and never experienced the "lit up warning lights" condition that Hoovie talks about. I too enjoy this barge of a car luxury with a sporty bend to it. The styling is timeless, flawless, restrained even. The next time you see one next to most any other car in traffic take note of the fender height, roof line height, etc. next to a modern car and you will be amazed at how low/long/sleek the E38 body is. Touche', old boy.! On my 3rd E39 and the first V8 engined as the others were 6 cylinder. I adore it and can do most of the jobs myself. the E38/39 are sure fire classics. My latest has only 88k on the clock and has spent its life garaged at night in South London so the bodywork is in the same condition as Tylers' 38. Buy either now before the world wakes up to their attributes. They're not bad to own really guys. Thanks awfully

Man! The idea of an E39 coupe sounds sick! Lol mine spent 16 of its 18 years mostly outside in the hot Florida sun and not garaged, but it did get good maintenance as far as the mechanical side of things go, also it was in my family so I know a wee bit of it’s history, overall a very enjoyable ride compared to the usual trucks and economy cars that I’m used to 😄now my brakes are shot and I can’t believe the prices on a decent set of pads and rotors, freakin outrageous!!!

Rented one of these in Vienna, Austria with 37 km on it. Drove to Vienna, Portofino, Stessa, Lichtenstein and back to Vienna... At one point, did 155mph for several hours with six people and all their luggage for 3 weeks. Awesome car.

I think your e38 is divine. Car wizard is right though: to make any sense, it has to be a long termer to justify the expense. I would happily own such a classic for years. And boy, isn’t the latest 7 series u-g-l-y.

New tires, tagged until November 22, passed smog, no check engine light on, all pixels on dash work, both lighters are still in and work,, original rims,, perfect interior, black on black, quiet and runs perfect.. The back set has never even been used, nothing broken on the interior except front cup holder, no dents, only two good size chips on drivers side, all windows work, beautiful car. 2700 BUCKS!!! The market says that car is only worth $8k - $10k but I think $15k for that 7-series is worth it. It's a gorgeous car and you're absolutely right, BMW went in the wrong direction after this car. And, back then, that era of BMW had your E38 (7-series) but then the E46 (3-series) was gorgeous, the Z3 Clownshoe (which you also own and refuse to discuss) was awesome, the E39 (5 series) was a looker and of course the Z8 was and is one of the all time great BMW's and, honestly, even though the E53 (X5) is a clunker, it's still very handsome. But, again, to your point starting with the E65 (7-series) well, you could say BMW went down in flame design. :)

About two years ago, I had $2500 set aside for a down payment on a new car. I decided to go out and see what I could get if I just bought a car outright instead. I love this generation of BMW 7 series and I was even looking at S class Mercedes at the same time. Most of the cars in this price range were either hammered or broken. I did find a very very clean 2001 740i for $1000, but it needed new timing chain guides and after watching the tutorial on how to replace them, I passed. Now the car I ended up getting was not one I had even thought of. I saw a 2000 Audi A8L 4.2 at a dealership for $2200! The inside was immaculate and the exterior I would say was a 8/10. Had only one previous owner and full service records, all work done at the local Porsche dealership. It did have 170k miles on it, but everything worked and the car was a dream to drive. Two years and 20k miles later, I've only replaced the tires and had a $320 service done and the car is still amazing. If you are looking for a big luxury car that won't be a nightmare, check out the Audi A8. If you can't find one, Tyler, i'm willing to let you or Doug try out mine. Anyway, that is one beautiful BMW.
