I had issues with Jai Courtney's portrayal of Kyle Reese. Michael Biehn's Kyle Reese was extremely grim. He rarely laughs or smiles throughout the film. We see that he's plagued by nightmarish flashbacks and hypervigilance. It's easy enough to see that growing up in a post apocalyptic wasteland and being endlessly pursued by giant killer robots can cause a case of ptsd like Kyle's. Biehn's performance at times can get a little over the top, perhaps even Shatnerian at times, but Biehn effectively conveys the character of a tortured soul who knows the fate of the world rests on his shoulders. Jai on the other hand is constantly flippant and spouting out quips. He seems to think he's Spider Man or Jack Sparrow rather than Kyle Reese. Even if the film is aimed at a younger audience, this detracts from the film.

If go back and look at the scene where young John Conner is running from the nice policeman after getting caught shoplifting, runs into Arnold pulling a shot gun and runs back to the police officer only to have Arnnie save his life. I used to be a big fan of Linda Hamilton. Back then Sarah Connor really had a journey, where she started out as an almost pure damsel and turned into a woman who you could believe would kick your ass, because she would fight tooth and nail with no regards for her own safety if she has to in order to win and I think Hamilton brought that to the screen perfectly. Back then Sarah Connor was an inspiring hero for everyone.

Exactly! We didn't need to have a 12 year old Emilia in this movie to give us this whole "women are strong" idea. It was already there! Sara Connor, Ellen ripley, and many others showed us that women are tough. Sure, she is a damsel for a bit in the first one, but she toughens up toward the end and is a complete badass in T2. It was the first terminator movie to really try and expand the story into new potential directions. The script and tone of the movie could have been a lot better, but the concept and story behind it all really opens up new possibilities in the terminator universe. I also love the idea of John being the villain, a lot of people don't like it but to me it makes perfect sense, if skynet could use the one strongest weapon the humans had why wouldn't they, especially as everything else they have done to get rid of john has failed. People say it messes up the timeline but the terminator timeline was messed up from the first movie. Overall its not the best terminator movie by a long shot but its nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be in my opinion, its better than 3 and salvation and far better than dark fate and out of all the terminator movies it offers the most potential to expand the story which is something the series desperately needs. I think people are just very hung up on their experiences as children watching terminator and T2 and still have not learned to let that go.

I thought the humans destroyed the time machine just after sending Reece through in the original movie? Now it seems they didn't and that time travel may be a two-way street. If that is the case, why didn't Skynet specially program a few Terminators in tradecraft and to avoid conflict, and send them back to do genealogical research on Sarah, Reece and a few others. They could bury that information in secure locations, multiple copies, for Skynet to find later. Then spam the past with Terminators to kill Reece and other resistance leader families before the leader in question was born? or have Terminators on standby at the time of Skynet's rise to kill them before they can react? That's the kind potential they get when they change the rules of the universe the original movie established.

Incidentally your brief review did all the things that the movie in question didn’t. Double kudos!

Not only it's a bad movie on his own merit(shitty CGI,bad acting, story full of plotholes) but it also makes everything that happened in the first 2 classic movies, obsolete. The second movie has a perfect ending which never needed a sequel, but greedy Hollywood is gonna milk this franchise into oblivion. The only Terminator movie,I would like to watch, would be a prequel, set in the future, showing John Connor fighting the machines, directed by James Cameron,Rated-R and in the same style,as the flashbacks from T1,but sadly they ruined this idea already with T4:Salvation.

One thing that got me was how 'stoppable' Terminators were in this film. Remember where you would go through a Terminator film and wonder, 'how can we stop this future machine with modern-day weapons?' The fact that Sarah can easily stop a T-800 with that rifle, and Kyle blows it's head off? With that kind of logic, all Kyle in the 84 film had to do was take that explosive and aim for the thing's neck.

I enjoyed Genisys, but I've always enjoyed the science and technology more than human characteristics...that is, I like watching the Terminators in action, and the consequences of time travel; I don't care about John Connor's humanity or Sarah Connor's transformation to a survivor/warrior, never have...the T-800 (or T-850 in T3) has always been my favorite character. I like the science in 'sci-fi' more than the fiction.

Yea casting for Sarah Connor was preatty horrible. Dialogs were trash. Pseudo feminist agenda pushing atrocious. I liked story tho. Yea it had a lot of recycled element but i found it interesting on how they put them together. And I was geniuinly suprised by John turn to the dark side. And I found him preaty intimidating with whole nanomachine shtick. Ending was stupid and shallow. If Pops had really sacrificed himself that would add some gravity to this ending, some meaning. That way it is another lets leve ourselves easy way to a sequel.

In a word: yes! I'm a huge Terminator fan, I even love 3 and "Salvation", but "Genisys" (what's up with the pseudo edgy spelling?) was unwatchable crap, and I turned it off after a few minutes. Jai Courtney is awful in everything he does, somebody even said in a KZitem video: "Hollywood, stop trying to make Jai Courtney happen." On a side note, KZitem's "censor bot" obviously has a very limited vocabulary, otherwise it would know that "bastardization" is a perfectly legitimate and unoffensive word. Maybe they should download a dictionary.

I’ve been rewatching the Terminator movies and I really didn’t mind Genisys, it wasn’t good but it was bad either. Granted, they borrowed a lot from the first two movies but it had a story and it moved, it was better than Salvation. But it established in this movie that the humans won the war and Skynet lost, so its traveling through different timelines or parallel worlds to find out if it ever wins. Who sent the T-800 to save little Sarah? It wasn’t the John in the Genysis timeline because he infected by the techno virus that changed him into the T-3000, could it be that John is fighting Skynet through multiverses instead of different timelines, that would be really cool to explore. But, being Hollywood and all, they’ll never touch that along with never having a Future War movie. I get the feeling that Dark Fate is going to be the same thing as the other movies and not mean anything and further taints the franchise. Until Cameron gets the rights to the Terminator series I’m still calling all of these movies canon and keep praying we’ll have a true sequel and end this series on a high note.

Why do you even ask? Juxtapose that stupid thumbnail of the Terminator in Genisys, with the violent, brilliant, relentless, uncompromising vision of the Terminator in 1982. There is your answer. Like everything else, films are abandoning their core ideas to appeal to a wider audience, and they suffer horribly as a result. No, Terminator was not a family friendly franchise and that's how it should have stayed.

Honestly, I feel that John Connor is the McGuffin of the Terminator movies. He's just an excuse to keep Arnie and Sarah Connor's adventures moving forward. I don't judge this actress height as a reason to not accept her portrayal of Sarah Connor. She seems more capable for the role than replacement Kyle Reese. I don't know...Maybe people look different than their alternate timeline Doppelgangers? It's not a great movie and sure didn't live up to the first 3 movies, but it was a decent popcorn flick. What did you really expect? I will see the new one with Linda Hamilton, but my sites are set low so as not to be disappointed. Who knows? It may be the Citizen Kane of killer robot movies.

One thing that’s weird; in T1 Kyle explains that they had Skynet against the wall, and sending the Terminator back was it’s last ditch effort to survive. After Kyle goes after it the time machine was supposed to be destroyed to prevent any more machines messing with the past. So that would make everything (even the near perfect T2) nonsensical UNLESS something stops John Connor from breaking the time machine (something like Genesys)

I really liked Genisys. I think people should start realizing that these movies are science fiction, not science fact. When T2 came out the special effects were cutting edge. I feel audiences are spoiled these days with the commonplace technology we have as for as special effects go. Had Genisys come out 1991, it would've been as big as a hit as T2 because of the special effects. Are there plot holes? Yes, but show me one sc-fi hit movie that doesn't have plot holes.

I'm going to take the controversial stance. As a long-time fan of the Terminator films and the Sarah Connor Chronicles TV show, overall Terminator Genisys is really good. The two main things people complain about are trashing the legacy of previous films and that the casting of Genesis was piss-poor. First let's discuss trashing the legacy of Terminator. Skynet is trying to destroy Humanity, and the way that it attempts to do this consistently through the films and show is to either kill or corrupt the Connors. It uses terminators, it uses time travel, it even uses humans who have been corrupted to meet this goal. How does using Nanobots to corrupt John Connors body become a betrayal to Terminators tone, universe and legacy? I understand that people really like the characters of John and Sarah Connor. But how does Skynet using new technology to meet its end goal and succeeding, in any way contradict or stop being believable in The Terminator universe? Please set aside your holy cows and think about it logically. Even Goku died occasionally in Dragon Ball Z. I look forward to the "reeeeee" response to this question. The second complaint is the casting. I agree that the guy that played Kyle Reese is completely wrong. I can kind of see what they were going with Sarah's character, they were trying to go for an actress who looked as close to Linda Hamilton as possible, even if she is a womanlet. I disagree that the guy playing John Connor was a poor casting choice, and this is because I saw Christian Bales performance playing John Connor, as well as that fucking awful teenager from Terminator 3. Out of everyone who's played John Connor, the latest entry is a breath of fresh air compared to previous performances. Arnold Schwarzenegger is of course the star of the show and he was the best part of this movie. I really enjoyed the Father Figure angle, as well as the humanizing of T800, where he is literally falling apart trying to protect those he loves. Terminator Genisys is not the worst Terminator movie, but it's not the best one either. It's above average if you were to grade all of them together. And by that metric Terminator Genisys is really good.
@Snake452006

Honestly, if you kind of look at it in a Multiverse theory kinda way, it's easy to overlook a lot of the issues. However, I do think that Jason Clark and Jai Courtney are the most bland people on this earth and I could not pick either out of a lineup if they robbed me without a mask. There were a few interesting parts of this movie, such as the Terminator getting a job in construction to help build the escape room at the end (I'd totally watch that as a Netflix series), or the detective who was going on about the robots and no one believing him. I did like the acid melting the T1000, and Sarah randomly shooting one of them because she had no idea which was which. There were some cool little parts of the movie, but on the whole they were just small ideas. Like a brainstorming conversation with a bunch of nerd friends at 3 am on a gaming night. Other than that, I think this movie is endemic of Hollywood right now: just a watered down cash grab that takes no real risks. A few parts were cool, but why bother? I just think of it as the Crap Universe, and move on. I don't hate it, but I'm not gonna race out to see the next one after this one was so bland. Even Ridley Scott is not immune to this, just watch Alien Covenant. He and everyone else forgot what made the Alien so terrifying. It was just out there, with no idea where it came from. I didn't need to know that some fucked up robot playing God decided to create them for weird reasons. It's just dumb. I know Jim Cameron gave this movie his blessing, but I don't think he really cares either at this point.

This movie also had a huge plot oversight in which Skynet could've simply won the war. When the group went to send back Kyle Reese through the time machine, one of their troops was secretly a machine, the one that captures the leader. All that machine had to do was to kill Kyle Reese before he disrobed and made the time jump, and Skynet would've won.

However, what I would have done first is to do a movie about young Sarah Connor, being defended by the T-800, so we could lead into this one. See, as I had understood the original trilogy, there was always a "window" into which Skynet could send thing into the past. It couldn't go too far from when it existed in it's own present. Which explained why it had to wait until he was a teen to send back a T-1000, because by the time it had finished research and development of the new and improved model, that was the furthest back the window could go. This also explains why any subsequent upgrades in the Terminator, such as the T-X, were always accompanied by time-skips forward in John's timeline as well. But this movie goes, *nope* to any previously established logic, and completely destroys a very carefully created timeline in the Terminator universe.

It's all garbage. Kyle Reese explains everything to Doctor Silberman. "When we arrived the Terminator had already gone through. Conner sent me to intercept and they blew the whole place."
