Been to DC a few times as a youngster, but never knew this.

originally D.C was planed to form a perfect rectangle and basically for the first few years it was a rectangle. Because the population did not grow as much as estimated, all areas west of the Potomac was returned to the State of Virginia

no it was because of slavery, and because slavery was not supported in dc and in virginia so virginia took it back.

@@TripHacksDC thanks for the response! Loved the video, i wish there was a more in depth video which talks about the traffic economy with all of the commuting and include 295, 395, 695 and the GW pkwy, as well as how it affects traffic in/around the 495 loop, i knows its probably too complicated to make a video out of, but it would be facinating to watch

Oh btw its easy to find the location of an address thats on a letter or word street that intersects a number by either the first or first two number! So 605 Atlantic street SE would be near the intersection of 6th and Atlantic street SE! 1900 Savannah St SE would be at the intersection of 19th and Savannah st SE! This would likely do no good for a tourist tho but if u live here this can help u in some ways but not all especially since the vice versa has no way of telling but instead u just have to find it unless u know the directions of the addresses on the north south streets which would definitely help a little bit lol!

It works the same way for numbered streets - you just count the number of lettered streets since the Capitol. For instance, 555 13th St NW is between E (5th letter) and F (6th letter) Sts, NW. It keeps working through the various alphabets as well, so I live in the 3rd alphabet on Delafield PL, NW, but the cross street is 7th, and it's the 4800 block for that street, so 48 total Sts north of the Capitol.

Washington is really interesting compared to where I live in Ottawa. The city seems very planned throughout every acre. Ottawa seems like there is a lot of "well where can we fit this in". City planning is very mish mash at times here.

Im glad i never thought i knew errything bcuz i never knew or realized that state name streets ran diagonal lol! I knew errything else tho! Im a pro or atleast almost a pro navigator of DC and i say almost bcuz I’ve never mastered the entire NW quadrant but i do have plenty of common sense so i end up finding my way around NW anyway! If one has plenty of common sense they can’t possibly get lost in DC!

I always thought there was no J street because Pierre L'Enfant just plain forgot - there was a weekly article in the old Washington Post magazine called "J street - stories from the street L'Enfant forgot" so I guess that's how I thought was the reason there was no J street

Yeah there are a lot of theories about there about the missing J. In the case the most boring answer is probably the right one. www.snopes.com/fact-check/no-way-no-jay/

Also don’t forget that the directional streets which also makes the borders of DC are also diagonal streets which are Southern Ave, Eastern Ave, and Western Ave! Not sure if we had a Northern Ave back in the day when the VA portion was still a part of DC before it was given back! If so I would assume that present day Western Ave would have been Northern Ave and Western Ave would have been on the Southwestern border which is present day I dont know lol, i just know its in VA somewhere lmao! But i do wonder sometimes why Western Ave is not Northern Ave!
