+Shelton Burnadeski Yur Dern tootin. Kill em all. (That's me being American again.) Seriously, yellow jackets are venomous, maybe more so than bees. If you accidently do something to stir them up, the whole nest will swarm out and attack you. This means a visit to the emergency room even if you aren't particularly allergic. If you are allergic, one sting can be fatal. Both Mathias and his brother have small children who might get too close to the nest. Thus, a yellow jacket nest is a danger to his family and any guests he might have. Unlike bees, you cannot trap and relocate them. Nobody wants a nest of yellow jackets on or near their property. The only alternative is to exterminate them.

Wasps declared war on me when I was about 8. Our family was just leaving on a road trip, and as I stepped outdoors, one fell out of the sky and stung me right between the eyes. Shortly after I found out that I am allergic. I still laugh when people who don't interact with the natural world in any meaningful way tell me, "If you don't bother them, they won't bother you!" Unfortunately, my existence bothers them. I find a nest anywhere on the property, they are DONE. I removed a room FULL of big flies (it was like a crime scene) with a shop vac once, took them outside, kept the thing running until the last moment, then dumped them out and doused with lighter fluid. No return visitors. I like your idea, but I'd have a sandwich of two screens of hardware cloth that could be removed, laid on the ground for easy cremation. Thanks for the vid; I loved the happy ending!

It all started 1 week ago, when we seen one of the many Giants we know are more numerous then all our colonies combined. One had gotten way to close to our city so one of our soldiers sent the Giant a warning and the Giant fled. A couple days later the Giant returns speaking its mumbles and jumbles of sound towards one of many things we don't understand. We were just deciding we misinterpreted the Giant's intentions and we weren't gonna send our legions when we seen metal as soft as paper stretch out like a tunnel come over us by the hand of the Giant. We heard humming louder than our's but as if it was only voice! City workers were heard cut off in mid scream, other's attempted to look at scene but followed the same fate. So have I. It's been 5 days and the Giant left us in this room with a floor of webs made spindled from metal and the walls were made of trees. They are far more advanced than we knew, and they leave us here to die, to rot. Wait, I hear shuffling, LIGHT?! Omg, I survi

Not wasps? lol you must be American
@emmitstewart1921
8 жыл бұрын
+superwinfieldgold True. however, there is a reason why we Americans make a difference between yellow jackets and other wasps. First, the nest of a yellow jacket is much larger and contains a lot more bugs with a lot more stingers. yellow jackets are smaller than other wasps and are usually more docile, but they are also fearless compared to other wasps and will fly right up to your face to drink out of the soda bottle you are getting ready to drink from yourself. As a result they can be very irritating. They have a body shape much closer to a honey bee (no "wasp waist") and similar coloration, so they are often mistaken for bees. They share with hornets a habit of hovering around a potential food site, so, if you happen to sit down near a nest, you can find yourself surrounded by curious yellow jackets. It is for these reasons that we differentiate between yellow jackets and other wasps. And to "step into a yellow jackets nest" is a synonym for disaster.

I worked in construction, primarily doing re-covers of building exteriors, so we were always working around existing structures and bushes and such. Lots of paper wasps and ground-nesting yellowjackets. Now a lot of contracting companies, especially the HVAC crowd, buy wasp killer by the case, but the owner where I worked was too cheap and I was too broke to buy it myself. So I researched a bit and found out that soapy water will suffocate most species in the wasp family or genus or whatever the category is. They aspirate through pores in their outer shell and the soap plugs the pores. So I started carrying a squirt gun (of the pressurized variety) clipped onto my tool belt. It works great as long as you get the right balance of soapy enough to work quickly but watery enough to easily spray. And it is WAY cheaper than commercial wasp spray! They don't die as quickly as the toxins but they do drop and struggle and act pissed but they can't do anything about it. Try it! It's fun!

"I'm not sure spraying raid at the hole where they came in and out would have done much" They also offer a Raid spray for wasps that foams and fills a nest and blocks the holes. WD40 is most satisfying when you can light it on fire, but burning down the building is the downside.

I always enjoy your videos. I had a similar problem. Used my Rigid Shop Vacuum with a couple of extra extension pipes that I got at Home Depot. Left the Vacuum run for a couple days then shut the machine off to see how many Wasps I caught after seeing multiple Wasps sucked up. All there was left was the dust of the pulverized Wasps inside my Vacuum canister. I recently used this method for a ground Wasp nest in our garden. By putting a rock next to the opening in the ground and positioning the nozzle about an inch from the rock ... I got excellent controlled suction ... and by stabalizing the extension pipes with bricks ... the hose assembly stayed securely in place and I was able to get rid of the nest.

For those complaining of "starving" them to death. That didn't happen, they died of thirst. You could probably accelerate their demise by leaving the fan on to desiccate them more quickly. Also, have a can of starter fluid? Put a trash bag over the whole contraption, spray in some starter fluid, tie the bag closed. That will end them. It's primarily ether. Best solution? Avoid the problem in the first place by placing fake hornets nests around the perimeter. You can buy them, but I find that taking a brown paper bag, stuffing it full of plastic bags (or whatever), choke it at the throat and shape it into a hornet-nest shape then hang it up...and you are good. I have used these for 3 years now and have had nary a nest. Hornets and wasps are very territorial and will not build a nest near another.

Honestly an electric heater would have probably worked if not in conjunction with baking the unit in the sun. Japanese bee's kill those big wasps by raising the temperature by bee balling them in a suicidal hug, so the temperature threshold for life of these insects isn't that wide. Just make it nice and toasty for a few hours and they would probably all be gone.

For those that are complaining about killing wasps, you obviously have never been around or stung by one before. There is nothing nice about wasp in the spot they were at. Now if they were in middle of a field and not in direct path of a door, maybe a different story as their main diet consists of bugs/caterpillars/spiders. They do pollinate but not as much as honeybee's do, and they usually only do that to feed the queen, their young eat the liquified bugs. But either way, I do not hesitate on killing wasps. Matthias couldn't keep his smile away from this video. LOL!

I have to add that having a wasp/hornet nest anywhere near family members is a safety issue. Given all the reasons explained elsewhere in this post, it is imperative to rid the surrounding areas of these pesky little rascals and at first site. Given the chance to expand and multiply, the chance of a freak encounter only makes this worse, especially if you happen to be allergic to them. The wrong way to find out is to do nothing about them and have it be too late. And to add, me not being allergic myself, I have never found it enjoyable to be attacked by these vicious creatures because it is never at my leisure when I'm expecting it to happen. Kill them all! Kill them all with fire!!!

+v0000000000000000v The sudden decompression of the air causes enough temperature drop to freeze them? Interesting. In this case, I'd just stick that box in my 22 cubic foot outdoor freezer. I'm not sure if people up in Canada usually have freezers like that, but they're very common where I live in the Southwestern United States.
@v000000000000v
9 жыл бұрын
Alan Falleur I think there are similar freezers here as well but not entirely sure. also when you turn the compressed air can upside down you are forcing out the liquid phase of the gas that's been compressed inside, the sudden drop in pressure means decrease in temperature, and the liquid has a very low boiling temperature of around -70F or -55C iirc, therefore it has a similar effect to liquid nitrogen, you can scatter most household items or insects in this case at that temperature, I think some people managed to break locks with upside down air cans too lol

That would have contaminated his device. Simple application of heat would probably have been enough, wasps don't tolerate high temperatures, I don't mean burning, just an electric heater for an hour or two pumped into an enclosed box would have simply baked them to death. Japanese bee's deal with those giant killer wasps by raising the temperature of the wasps body by piling on them in a giant suicidal ball of death while working their muscles. The range for life of these creatures isn't that high, and yes they'd just dry out as well, so it would have been much much faster to do it that way. So its funny that mathias didn't think of this because he's usually very clever.
