I think people also go to freelance too early. You can't get your skills good enough without proper mentorship and guidance, and that you can find as an employee.

I agree. Not everyone can do Tech, some people have other skills. But I get her answer in saying that there is no niche for it.

This is very true - she's not saying the only field to freelance in is tech. Perhaps you missed that part. She's literally saying you have to have something to offer, sell or market in order to be a freelancer. TECH is just really hot right now. Come on man....how did you NOT get that from her?! Are you seriously not able to use your mind and think about her larger point and can only see what she says?!

Translator is another typically freelance job. But you need to have the skill first. In freelancing you don't get "onboarding", you need to sell value from the first job.

My neighbour is a religious consultant. He even has an employee living with him. I think he makes most of his money from offering Skype calls where he tells people how to connect to God in a holistic way. (It is very hippie inspired and guru inspired). He once caught a wasp off my front door with his hands and said he taught away that to people/ organisations.

I would like to add, as a Developer with a UX/UI background, this field is actually incredibly difficult to get into. I got my bachelors degree in this field and it still took me 7 months to be offered employment -literally two weeks ago. I had been looking since December/January!! The amount of competition is out of this world. It’s almost unbelievable. Edit: I wanted to add. Not only is the competition insane, but the interview process for these jobs are even more insane!! They will test your mental well-being to its limit. I only cautiously encourage people if they want to get into this field to know the reality of what it’s going to be like to even get in.

I feel that, I tried to get to a UX/UI internship position for my degree but I had to go with something else bc I just didn’t get any interviews. The search ended up delaying my graduation by half a year

I think you have a distorted sense of difficulty entering a field if you think 7 months is a long time to wait after graduating to get even remotely close to the job you want. Most millennials saw themselves waiting anywhere from a 1-5 years struggling to get a foot in the door in DOZENS of fields that didn't previously, nor did they on paper, require a master's degree, but that was the competition: Gen X-ers with master's degrees and experience, forcing thousands to shift into other fields, sometimes permanently. 7 months is not a long time to search for a job, and if the interviewing process is either a) genuinely abusive or b) simply beyond your experience to handle, I would hope you stepped back and looked at who you were interviewing with and whether their approach to hiring was reflective of a toxic work environment. I know, with what sounds like little to no work experience you may not have an example to compare it to, but if your gut is ever saying "run away" and your brain can't immediately label that a purely fear response, I hope you'd listen to that instinct because they're often right. Finally, you don't need to "warn" people off. They'll figure it out upon research and if they fail to research, then that's on them.

I’m sorry you’re having so much trouble! However, I would like to highlight that there is a major difference between getting a FT job and freelancing. Many companies are doing hiring freezes right now (esp industries that employ UX/UI) but they’re still working with freelancers as a workaround.

@@KatieCottinghamOkay Boomer, you apparently have a distorted sense of self considering you're slandering someone for their own personal experience. Calm down, and maybe attend therapy to figure out the issues causing all this projection.

Don't mind them, they're just a typical older gen trying to invalidate every single thing younger ones experience as if it's a competition. Congrats on your new job!

There has been massive layoffs in tech this year. Senior software developers/engineers with 5-10 years of experience are applying for junior positions. @AdviceWithErin, could you help provide an outline or direction how one would approach freelancing with the type of environment we're in 2023?

I think people give advice largely because they don’t know how else to provide support to someone. People don’t like to feel helpless when they are bearing witness to someone’s pain and so giving advice provides them with a means to escape the uncomfortable feelings which tend to accompany helplessness. I also think people do not know how to tolerate ambiguity in any form, and will instinctively look for ways to free themselves of uncertainty if possible. Thus, they feel compelled to give advice so that they can escape the discomfort which ambiguity evokes. Ambiguity tends to bring a sense of directionlessness to the forefront, whereas advice seemingly provides one with direction, even if that direction is actually unhelpful or ill-advised. I think many would rather attempt to sway someone suffering in any kind of direction than to coexist with them amongst an unpredictable, uncertain ambiguity.

Hey erin, ive been wondering about starting up with freelance work, and ive been meaning to get you opinion on aspect prices, should i lowball it so that at least my prices are an attractive point? Or should i aim for a more avarage price believing that my quality of work/good image boost up my market presence? Is there any room to the mindset that i provide such a good service that it is completely justified to go above avarage when charging peeople even at the very beggining?
