Beavers mark their territory by making scent mounds. They scoop up mud off of the river bottom, and then place the mud on a rock or on shore, and then spray their scent on it. This tells other beavers that the area is occupied. The scent spray is a combination of castoreum and urine. If you are wondering, the spray is actually quite foul and pungent, at least for the beavers I follow. I have read that the scent can also communicate whether the beaver is a male or female, and how old it is.
This video merges a number of clips that I filmed in April 2024 of beavers marking their territory in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan .
