Step 1. DO NOT by a Hublot Step 2. Remind yourself that Richard Mille will be the next Frank Muller (do not buy into the hype). Step 3. As an amateur stick with well known brands with low service costs (Rolex, Omega).

The best piece of advise I’ve gotten and that I would give is this - Don’t settle. If you want that Sub, works hard and save for it, don’t settle and get something cheaper just to ‘scratch that itch’ because it won’t, you’ll still want the Sub, and when you sell that intermediate watch you’re gona take a loss and that’ll just put you further from the watch you truly truly wanted

Can't agree more! I had a tag as a present and it was stolen in a burglary. I didnt have a big interest in watches so I didn't replace it straight away. A few years later i decided thst i needed a substantial watch that was from a real watch maker, so i bought a tag again since that's all i knew. It was a nice formula 1 chronograph in teal blue and i was super happy. I paid about £1450 in cash which included insurance. Nowadays I know more, back then i had extremely good credit and lots of cash. I could have walked out with a skydweller or something but against the advice of the agent I knew what i wanted and just bought the tag. In the end I gave the tag to my son on his 18th so not all was lost but I just can't help to wonder how my collection would have looked if I had started of really strong. After all, the watch lader is like the property ladder- if you can get your foot on as higher rung as possible you'll be able to climb higher faster.

Waiting and go next bracket is right. My aim was an Rolex. But I stop saving and got a panarai, then I stop to get Tudor. With the time lost, Rolex has skyrocketed. Get the one that u like first.

That exact Tag is what I’m wearing as my first proper luxury watch. Pleased with it, great watch for not a lot. Initially I was looking for a mechanical automatic. But found them too big and chunky for my relatively small wrists. People may baulk at it being quartz, but I was more interested in how much I liked the watch. The movement wasn’t the deciding factor for me. Great tips Eric, I’m sure They’ll be helpful in the future.

damario404 Apple Watch is not a watch, Citizen is for Taxi drivers. Get a Tudor Black Bay Eta or 58 or a Speedmaster, to start a decent collection, then a Rolex Explorer 39 mm new version.

damario404 You are most welcome. I ve been there too, don’t but a lot of inexpensive pieces, and stuff like the Apple Watch which is not cheap ,depending on the model. Save up, find ways to earn more income, cut some expenses and then buy one nice piece to start. If you are a small to medium build guy the Tudor BB 58 is great value and a great piece to start with. Also between Citizen and Seiko I prefer Seiko. There are some great automatic Seiko’s you can pick up for $400 to $ 700 with the 6R15 movement for example. You can start with one of those then save up for a Tudor BB 58 or Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Hesalite and manual wind . Good luck on your watch journey ....

Bottom line: Save, and save, and save... save again, until you actually get the Rolex you REALLY wanted in the first place. Unless you see some ridiculous deal out there when someone needs cash, you won't get anywhere trying to sell at what you paid. Save until you have total amount for watch you want. Purchase what you wanted in the first place, don't try to flip.
