I had a friend who grew up in Windsor. She and her sister rode their bicycles over to the Castle and climbed to the top of the wall. And Fell In. Oops. Princess Elizabeth (yes, this was during WWII) rescued them. The princesses (they did talk to both) were very nice. After making sure they were ok, Royal Guard escorted them back to their bikes. It was a different world back then.

I completely agree with trains needing better subsidising and being far too expensive in many cases. When comparing to some countries though, you have to remember places like France have heavily gutted local services and massively concentrate on express services between cities. It is not entirely a 1:1 comparison, although there is still things we can learn from it.

DB (German Railways) alone have more than 5,400 station and there are also other railway companies that also have stations. Combined with some "awkward" stations and lines, such as the Gräfenbergbahn, that runs from Nuremburg Northeast and which has no (passenger train) connection to any other part of the national network, or the Kiel Schulen am Langsee station (near some schools), which only gets one arrival in the morning and no departures at all, doing all' die Bahnhöfe will probably be more difficult and time-consuming ;)

Yep. The beautiful Felletin line, for instance, the morning train leaves for Limoges, the evening train returns, with the train staff staying in the only hotel of the town... And to show the SNCF wants to get rid of it, they run a parallel bus line that leaves about the same time, but taking a different route. A real shame, actually.

I found out that Surbiton was originally called Kingston, owing to the town being one of the ambitions of the railway company to serve the town, however, the only reason that the mainline doesn't serve Kingston (Surbiton is two miles from Kingston) is due to opposition to the railway at the time. There was a twenty years gap more or less between the mainline opening through Surbiton and Kingston (1840 for the mainline and 1863 for when the Kingston loop opened)
