Great channel! Great video! Relatively new to longboarding, and what made the biggest difference in my footbraking is thinking about lowering my brake foot through the bending of my front leg's knee, NOT by shifting my hips, which causes too much weight to go to the brake foot. (This is especially evident on taller, bottom mount skateboards) Also, I found stretching out my arms helps in maintaining good balance.

This is what I'm working on. I want to go fast, but holy shit I get scared when I get going fast. I kind of stomp my foot on the ground to brake, which works, but very jerky and not smooth. I wanna be smooth, like you man!

I second this motion. I’ve been trying the Swiss footbrake and I’m not sure if I’m supposed to keep my center of gravity over my front foot or further back? I see some people actually transition to sitting on their board too and that can be helpful too.

I've been watching your videos since the Pranayama review. Seriously: good job, congratulations. Less seriously: In this section I found something intriguing (ca. 01:00) - you use your phone as a wheel block. How does it work in practice? Is my Samsung enough to keep the board wheels in place? or should I rather opt for the latest iPhone?

For building strength in my lead leg I started doing one legged squats using just my body weight, which has also improved my balance. Also, I found that pushing up small hills would absolutely smoke my quad (thigh) early on, but once I could do several and still have thigh stamina I figured out that the strength was improving. As you said, having strength in that leg is crucial.

Such a good video. My problem is I push mongo and my preferred foot on the board is my back foot. I used to skateboard and I compensated for this by just popping the board into my hand and doing a running stop when I needed, but I've just picked up longboarding and the looser trucks, and faster speeds is causing me issues. I actually had a bad accident today trying to foot break mongo and losing balance today. Any tips for someone mongo other than "don't skate mongo?"

Try skogging and switching your footbraking! And split angle trucks, will amke your back truck less twisty. But yeah it is a lot harder to footbrake, I do sympathise with you. You will get bette rwith balance tho

At 6:58 you recommend brake soles, specifically the Freebrake brand: kzitem.info/news/bejne/lmutyHmco6WHooo Thanks for this tip, I just seriously got into longboarding and I have been avoiding footbraking(even though I don't have the skills to slide yet) because it almost immediately wears down my skateboarding shoes. It seems stupid that even dedicated "skateboarding shoes" ruin so fast if you actually footbrake. Do you know if any skateboarding shoes come stock with brake soles?

Such a helpful tutorial - I’ve really benefitted from your ‘journey toward sliding’ method. Just came back from a couple of hours on some hills I’ve never had the confidence to cruise. Started mellow and worked my way up. Feel great about the technique - I was using some homemade 3mm rubber soles and ground down the entire heel after about 1hr, it was good to realise that I need to transfer pressure from heel to the rest of the foot as I brake. Also need to find some more durable rubber!

I'm a beginner with about 5 hours of overall practice and haven't practiced foot braking at all yet since it's scary going fast then needing to keep balance while sliding your foot down. I think I need to do a combination of your leg strength exercises and just foot braking at a very slow speed at first, then gradually foot braking at progressively higher speeds. I should really dedicate a good 5 hours of practice into just foot braking and I think it'll be proficient at it. I'll try my best to let you know my progress at the end of practicing it, but sorry in advance if I forget to. Also, your videos are very good and informative with lots of detail, I appreciate it dude!

So I can footbrake pretty easily going fast on flat/ slightly downhill roads, but I have no idea what do to do when I reach a real hill. If I footbrake I end up stopping completely on the hill (too much friction), leading to a cycle of going and stopping , going and stopping , etc, all the way down, which sucks. I can’t seem to find a way to just lightly brake and control my speed. I know slides exists but streets are rough here and I’m using soft wheels
