I've never used Laravel. Not even one line of code.
When I built Trongate - PHP's first cancelled framework - I gave myself a few rules. One of the rules was, "don't look at Laravel". At the time I was worried that I might see something that I like and then copy it.
Of course, the idea of just copying Laravel would not be cool. I was of the opinion that the PHP community deserved an alternative way of doing things. Actually, I still believe that.
So, even though I've posted a lot of videos in which I'm highly critical of Laravel these are all handled from a 'thirty thousand foot view'. My criticisms of Laravel have been to do with things like slow benchmarks, over-engineering and lack of stability, brought on by frequent rewrites. These are all things I can discuss without actually using the thing!
However, I make no secret of the fact that I don't know Laravel. As far as Laravel goes, I'm a complete newbie.
So, now that Trongate is cancelled, I thought it would be interesting to fire up the computer and try to see how I get on as a Laravel user.
I am going to come into this with an open mind. However, I think the results are going to be hilarious. Here's why:
1). I think people will be shocked when they find out how much of an idiot I am! I probably won't be able to make a basic homepage work!
2). I have a suspicion (and we'll see if I'm right or wrong) that Laravel is completely over-engineered. If I'm right then it is going to be a disaster.
So, come along, half a few laughs and don't ridicule me too much if I mess this up!
