Great video! After watching your 4070ti review I had purchased the 4070ti Super and it's been perfect so far! You're the only one testing a lot of these GPUs in VR and it's honestly an amazing service to the community.

Another great review! it's always interesting to see these VR AMD reviews especially because you're basically the only one out there making them. Also I'm glad they improved the drivers so much to the point that it was plug-n-play for you, after all the headaches we went through when the 7000 series came out it's awesome they finally overcame them. Hopefully they can get it right too for the 8000 series right from the get-go.

4:04 this is exactly why I much prefer using virtual desktop or even steam link Idk what happens inside the spaghetti code of oculus, but the app loves to take about 3x more encoding resources than virtual desktop, so if you're on something like a 2070 or below, using oculus is basically not an option, you won't get 120hz on the video stream unless you tune the res down This is also why if someone wants to stream or record long sessions, I can't recommend oculus as it'll struggle to keep the encoder framerate while also sharing resources with OBS But I will admit the graphs of the quest app are much better for measuring performance, been a while since one of these has came out so really glad to see them

Great video, once again. I love my 7900 GRE and got a nice boost with overclocking ! The stock Vram is pretty slow which could be why performance is pretty much the same as the 7800xt. It would be really interesting to see how the GRE scales with OC in VR ;).

I have this exact GPU that you tested and I can confidently say that it's really nice to use. AMD needs to get in the spotlight when it comes to "affordable gaming". All this makes me excited for the 8000 series that will be out later in 2025. I can't wait to see how AMD performs. Thumbs up for your video and can't wait to hear your opinion on RDNA 4 GPU's.

Meta(Oculus) isn't investing in their PC software like they should. Virtual Desktop provides a FLAWLESS experience for AMD and Nvidia users. I have a 7900 GRE in my 7700X system and an RTX 4090 in my 7800X3D system so I'm speaking from experience. The 7900 GRE system is my dedicated PCVR system too.

After using a 6700XT for 2 years, I recommend choosing Nvidia for VR. 1. Nvidia cards have NVENC, which generally offers better image quality and performance for VR applications 2. Although I haven't had issues with AMD drivers before, I've encountered problems with VR. For example, Virtual Desktop, a PCVR app, frequently warns me about buggy drivers and suggests downgrading to version 23.12.1. These driver issues have persisted for almost a year and still haven't been fixed. Additionally, airlink and ALVR had specific problems that were hard to identify. In retrospect, choosing a 3060Ti would have spared me a lot of trouble with diagnosing these issues. 3. Apps that helps customizing VR experience like VRPerfkit have some options only available to Nvidia cards

There are no problems with H.264 on AMD GPUs and in fact it works better for me than H.265 since you can use a higher bitrate, it's only when you compare its hardware encoder to nvidia's that you notice that it has lower quality at the same bitrate, but I did notice that for the 7000 series they improved it and I see no difference compared to the 4000 series anymore except at very low bitrates of less than ~10Mbps, it's the same thing with H.265.
@GUCFan

Doesn't Quest Link uses H.265 now? I was able to play Beat Saber in the past on my GTX680 because of H.264 encoding. Then one day i try playing and Quest Link doesn't work anymore, turned out that the app had been updated and no longer supported H.264 for video encoding for Quest Link.

AV1 and HEVC should look better than AVC. But we're talking about 200 Mbps bitrates ... Also AMD made a lot of improvements to AVC with the latest drivers. It's no longer the meme quality it was even 2 years ago

Nice. It would be nice if you could start to show some tests with the psvr2 too. I notice that on psvr2, it's more demanding on the PC. Perhaps it's the difference of bandwidth of displayport vs. compress data for quest. Also, the steamvr show differents resolution for then. No one is doing that, and since you are the only one that tests this for us, since no one do it. It would be nice for you to do it too. Edit. Also on psvr2 the only option os 90hz and 120hz. Psvr2 doesn't have 75hz.

What you are not considering about the GRE is that it is artificially power limited due to being a Chinese market card. You can overclock it and gain way more performance. It's on you to do this. The specs are there, it's just artificially limited for US sanctions. Once you realize this, you should understand it's worth MORE than the paltry premium AMD asks for it, and it outperforms everything in it's price class.

I typically do all my GPU testing with out of the box settings as that's what I feel the majority of people will do as many people are not comfortable doing any kind of over clocking. There are of course the enthusiasts out there that will do that and my understanding is it's overclocking the memory on these GPU's that can increase the performance quite a bit, especially at higher resolutions like 4K. This should also benefit VR performance as we're usually running at resolutions well above 4K in VR. I am planning to do a follow-up video to this one where I overclock the memory and show how much of a performance uplift it provides, so stay tuned.

Hello, I've been running a 6750 XT with the Quest 2 with no issues mainly for Iracing, so it gets the job done. I'm looking for options for my next upgrade. In your opinion, does Nvidia encoders really make a difference? The pricing is steering me away from Nvidia since prices outside the US are outrageous. I'm currently playing with H.265 at 200 mbps bitrate, looks good and latency is good too. Cheers!

When the Radeon 7000 series first launched, and for a LONG time after, their drivers didn't handle VR all that well, but it seems they've pretty much got that all sorted out and fixed now, so I feel AMD is a much more viable option for VR now. Also with the drivers and stuff where they're at now I don't feel like there's much of a difference anymore between using h.264, h.265 or (if you have a Quest 3) even using AV1 with Virtual Desktop. I don't think Quest Link allows you to use AV1 yet.

@Maraksot78

Things have changed quite a bit since those older videos and there's not much difference between h.264 and h.265 now. Also, it's what Quest Link defaults to, and I try to stick to the defaults as much as I can to give people that out of the box experience.
