My experience with a BMW 123d (200hp and 400nm) 1. when i turn cruise control on it shows me on the small window 2. my car still has original mats and they dont get stuck on the clutch pedal 3. the radio disappears once heated up slowly 4. i have the m sport version and the ride is harsch but perfect when you are driving fast 5. on the 123d the gear ratio is fucked up and 6th gear will have higher rpm than the 120d resulting in lower mpg (they did this to achieve the 7 second from 0 to 60) 6. there is literally no space for the rear passenger but boot is decent size 7. around 130 000 miles i had to replace front shocks and top mounts and injector copper seals 8. you havent mentioned the swirl flaps problem which can cause engine damage but when i took mine out i was lucky as they were very loose and they would have fallen in the engine very soon, also the inlet was very gunked up from the egr so gave it a good clean I think those car do have a share of problems like pretty much any car, its more for the people who care about the care, if you havent got any clue about this car you should stay away

Very harsh, I’ve been driving the 120d M for three years and not had any problems. It been a good and pleasant car to dive. The only problem I find is that it invokes a unhealthy rage from other road users of all ages sometimes. If you keep it clean 🧽 this stops this. Why! I do not know! Can not understand why because if you wanted to show off, you would get a more powerful model. Overall I’m glad I purchased it compared to other brands I could have chosen from.

Pretty much bought a BMW E82 2010 123D Coupe because of this, the car has not long had it's Timing Chain and parts replaced which is a massive win before i purchased it. Funnily enough was a secondary school friends car just before me, weird how things play out. 96K Miles, Full CIC Display, Combobox which i've yet to completely code however will probably scrap it as it's mostly for Iphones... Rip out the Sound System and Amp in the boot and replace it with a dual amp setup potentially which will control all the front speakers - rear deck speakers which i'll be switching to 6x9's and potentially a boot based subwoofer. Need to rip the wheels off though! Need to take a steel brush to the Break calipers and plate due to rust, then to paint! :D Hopefully all goes well!

It is the N47 engine. My brother has a BMW320d Msport with the earlier and better M47 engine. He has remapped his one to about 210bhp. Initially it was 163bhp. My brother is a mechanic with 20 years in the trade and deals with many cars and hates the 1-series and even tells me that people that own 1-series don't like them. I've never liked the 1-series or X-series. I'd love an M4 or a 5-series. I nearly bought a classic E28 525i recently.

The torque has nothing to do with the rpms and speed, except that more torque will make you reach a certain speed faster. The speed which you are going is determined by the gear ratios in your transmission and differential. You can have both 250 and 500 Nm but the rpms will stay the same for 30 mph.

The floormat? wait..... it's positionned too much to the front, it shouldn't climb on the base of the gas pedal nor on the foot rest. Pull it a little backward and everything will be ok.... Unless your issue is that it doesn't stay in its place and slide frontward. And gear ratio and speed? Since when reaching 2k rpm is too high for a Diesel engine? It's normal the engine can't catch up when running under 1200 rpm, it's not an electric motor, this is why cars have a gearbox. If you have the chance to try some other cars, you'll be amazed how some engine aren't able to catch up if you run them under 1700 rpm (and I'm not even talking about gas engine).

Hi Mat, I also own a E87 120i 2005 and E61 520d 2009. Yes, on the 1series: No Cruse controls indication - wtf The Display Topic of the Alpine CD73 ... Add the rattle noise on the A Column left/right Magnet Valve for VANOS Unit (in/out) The stretching of chain Strong gear shift handling and so one... Some you can fix in advance. Replace the oil of gear and add the differential Oil change / filter for Motor every 15.000 necessary (!) For chain - Check the correct version of screw for chain tension (Kettenspanner) In case you have allready a topic with the chain- sadly you have to check the oil pump suction filter (Mesh) in side the oil sump (lot of work) One word to the Display: I guess all of user have this topic - and you can only fix by buying an new display and replacing. I don’t know why Alpine Hungary don’t cell to Aftersale Market this with an acceptable price. On eBay and friends (like Alibaba) you get it for 100 euro - if is still available and this is extortionate for such kind of display - 😡

Annoying thing is also the front windows when it gets cold and they stick due to the seal getting frozen. Running a card between that and the window usually sorts it though :) I had an issue with the ABS rings on the rear of the car which was causing the ABS to kick in randomly sometimes making it undrivable. These can be replaced independently though. I bought them online and got them fitted for £80. Another garage was wanting over a grand for a driveshaft replacement so was a good saving lol. BWM's of this era also get an issue with the light coming on that says that you have a faulty light even though you dont. That on mine is to do with a faulty contol module which is located in the driver footwell. £600 to get this replaced apparently and the guy at my local BMW specialist has said its fine to just leave it. Hope this helps a few people out :)

The following year one of the tensioners in the chain randomly failed and it was back in again for another chain replacement. All this was covered by the warranty which added up to about €5000 in parts and labor including the two rear drive shafts. Great car, nice engine, absolute insanity to buy one privately lol.

Hi Mat, congrats on the channel, and keeping it interesting! The 1 series is a fantastic car, but I have to mention a few points about what you covered (in no particular order): - As far as I can tell, those aren't OEM BMW floor mats. - The DPF regeneration process requires the glow plugs to be operational, or it won't work (I have a KZitem video about this if you are interested in the technical reasons). - All N47 engines will terminally self destruct, and you are getting close to the upper end (mileage) of when that happens. If you get the engine out and fix the issue then it will be expensive, but your engine will be saved (there are cracking issues with the timing sprocket as well on some N47 engines - which is integral to the crankshaft, so a new crankshaft is needed too). If you ignore it, then you will be up for an engine replacement as a broken timing chain will destroy all of your valves and pistons. Not BMW's finest engine...
@danieldixon3604

Would you say theres a common mileage for when its most likely to occur?

@@danieldixon3604 I have heard of cars with as low as 60k miles self-destructing, but more usually double that. That engine should have been recalled. In the US there was a class action lawsuit about it, but I didn't keep an eye on it to see if it was successful.
@JonJon-dk3nh

I have seen 200k mile N47's without problems. It depends on luck and how well you maintain it. A specialist told me the rockers break if the piston hits the valves. BMW only recalled N47 engines upto the very start of May 2009. Cars made after this got a revised crankshaft pulley and crankshaft so it wouldn't stretch the timing chain.

I own an e87 118i. My chain was loose, it was easily replaced with my valve stem seals for very cheap. It can be easily solved and you'll have a very nice driving, pretty reliable car.

Way to avoid the timing chain failure is to have a car that's been serviced properly
@spencerhulme1203

Lol not many people know how to service a BMW properly even the garages it is a lot more than a oil, fuel filter change because of how the engines work - the parts you cannot see that clog - the hose pipes that crack at the back of the engine - the oil diaphragm on top of the rocker cover sealed and what happens when the EGR is pushing dirty oil and contaminants intot the engine bay - plummets on fuel economy - pressure leaks - and et, all.

My mum bought me a 2008 BMW 116i as my first car a month ago, and my car works perfectly fine so far. I've been watching lots of reviews on the e87 after I got it, and I was actually wondering why so many e87s have a manual transmission. My e87 has an automatic transmission, but it seems like the majority of reviews on the e87 all have a manual transmission. I've watched all of your videos on modifying the e87 btw and I just wanna say that you did an excellent job. My car has already had the m-package so I don't need to worry about modification.

Camchain failure is down to poor maintenance and incorrect oil. The Camchain guide is plastic and breaks up. The later 2012 upwards is way better.

Is it stupid of me to buy a 116i from 2005? Im so confused? From what i've read the petrol one from 2005 has less defaults than the newer ones from 2007-2008 when they did the facelift. Im so scared to buy it but its about 3000 pounds and 124000miles. 😭

I think this is really a bad car and all Mat said in the video happens to me ( I hate the pedal issue). One more problem I have is that on full tank, the fuel gauge shows 3/4, never reaches 1. Let me make a practical compare: I own a Golf V 2006 GTD 170hp in Albania, and I own a BMW 118D 2008 143hp UK imported in Ireland: GOLF V BMW118D DPF Faulty Faulty KM per full tank 650-850km 550 -650km Power 170hp 143hp Vibration Low High even on Streering wheel Engine noise. High Low Repair/parts. Cheap. Expensive Acceleration 7s 11s to 100 Assembly Good loose Space Feels spacious Feels tight. Just today the local mecchanic said me to avoid the bmw 118d, especially because parts are loose, the exast pipe was pending loose as well, but what I do not understand more is how can the bmw 118D consume so much fuel compared to the gtd which is much more powerful and faster.

I had a '06 120D with the M47 engine. Biggest scrap piece of shit I ever bought. Any BMW out of warranty or 100K+ miles is scrap, they're unreliable and breakdown as they age. BTW to listen out for timing chain on any vehicle with one, rev it to 1500RPMS and hold it there. Then listen for a clanging noise or a ticking. It broke down or had faults once a month, each repair was £1,000 after the first two repairs I just got rid of it. Turbo seals failed causing blue smoke on start up. Rear main seal was pissing oil out and it had window regulator fail along with a bunch of other shit. I've seen Honda diesels with 250,000 miles with less wrong with them. On stock turbos. German's aren't built to last. I only buy Japanese vehicles now and I research models for reliability before buying. I've done 6K miles in my Honda diesel now in the three months I've owned it and the only expenditure was oil & filter to service it.

The chain problem is only on N47, not m47. And in that case isn´t a chain failure its a failure from differents parts of the motor, that makes a chain failure. If you change those parts before, is cheaper, you´ll don´t have that chain problem. If you don´t change oil in the time, you too have that problem. It´s esay if you make a correct manteinance the problem probably will not appper.

Everything is fixable and preventable, even the cam chain stuff, just change oil every 10k km. But the gear ratios, THE GEAR RATIOS! How did bmw mess up so bad. I always find myself doing 10kmh over or under the speed limit because of the dumb gear ratios. Btw, anyone looking for a manual bmw look into clutch delay valve beforehand. It's the dumbest thing, makes you feel like you don't know how to drive a car, for me it took good couple of weeks to get used to it. Otherwise very nice daily car, pulls good (7.5s 0-100), comfortable for a hatch, but handles well, m package suspension is great, just fun to drive around. Much, much better than any daily hatch from this era.

No wonder your dpf got clogged...you drive at too low rpms....you should always be over 2k if your engine is cold....also you can break the turbo if you drive like that... I am not hating just giving advice.
