I can’t take a review seriously when you discuss specs and don’t even listen, let alone have the unit on hand. Ridiculous. As a working engineer for over 20 years, this is empty content. Also, any creative engineer can play with features and use them as flavorful tools, gimmick or not, especially for fun on the side/ on vacation, etc. I’ve come up with very creative projects that ended up in commercial releases by playing with “toys”. Too much stock is placed on a device and not enough on talent.

I see red even with a limiter and Kclip on my master, so even inter sample peaks are being clips so there is 1000% nothing reaching 0. 1: The Volt's (176, etc) compressor adds gain compensation which further boost the mic input gain getting about the same level like the ID or the SSL. 2: "If you somebody who take recording serious you are not going to track with" -> trust me, serious guys won't use any of these you recommended. They will probably go the Solo or Twin that just eats all these. Choices. Next. You forgot to mention that tracking with that "gimmicky" vintage preamp and compressor actually could be more fun for some than tracking totally raw, boring sound. Especially for people who had no training hearing what a compressor does. Now they will. And those features sound great. Sound quality for the Scarlett vs Volt? Is there someone biased? You perhaps missed to check the massive difference of the headphone output, even just the power, which the Scarlett lacks seriously. Volts are for those who want to get into recording, and the experience for those might be more colorful and joyful than with other interfaces. If you asked me, using any of these would fit the job. Some might appreciate features of other interfaces, but saying that the built in compressor is worthless or not pro is totally missing the point.

Just my two cents. .. that's not how it works in the real word imo... specs are important and should be compared, but the difference of the specs you compared were very small. What makes a BIG difference afterall is the sound you get with each interface. Who the hell cares about 3db more input gain if the other interface just sounds better? There is no doubt that the specs are REALLY underwhelming. But the amount of effort youve put into making these videos just to compare it and criticize it in comparison to your favorite audio interfaces/preamps without even actually trying it yourself, just says something elsw. Unless youre actually AB-ing it, I think its hard for you to say that its not actually worth buying. Even Focusrite has their gimmicks, the AIR feature? but thats part of how you SELL things just like most youtubers nowadays with their clickbaits, including you mate. Doesnt always tell the whole story. You should know it yourself. You've been swapping and going back and forth between gears this past year mate, with your preamps and mics. Making a product decision like this based exclusively on a spec sheet is just a moronic idea. When the results are subjective, you cannot add pure objective data and say that is all you need. Imagine buying a car, and deciding that because the engine is bigger, and it produces more KW, and the 0-100 time is better, it must be faster and therefor better. But the driving experience is ruined because the handling is horrible. For something like this you can look at a spec sheet and get an idea, but for something like this, for you to simply say it is worse than something else before you have even listened to it and putting all your advise based on the spec sheet... shame on you.

Unless you have a real need for Omni-directional and Figure-8, I would still stick to the NT1. The reason why is the frequency response is more neutral on the NT1 so you'll have a better representation of what you're actually recording (which makes work in post easier), the noise floor is lower so you'll have less noise when you compress, and finally it will require less gain from the pre-amp to drive. @@simonebarbella4118 not a problem. There are so many options for microphones out there that once you understand how to read a frequency response graph, it makes sifting through microphones pretty easy. The ONLY issue you may run into is many companies kinda fudge their readings. So no mic is ever as smooth as the graphs represent. Some are more accurate than others. If you want a more accurate representation and hear all of the microphones, you can use something like Audio Test Kitchen which will kinda blow your mind. It has most of the major mics and you can see what the frequency response is accurately, plus hear the mic used on multiple audio sources. It's pretty good.

I've felt that the only options folks should consider sub $300 are from SSL, Audient and Motu. The next upgrade is really the Motu Ultralite MK5 above that price point. Maybe the Antelope Zen Go if you're willing to deal with shenanigans. I said it in a comment earlier, if UA was packing heat in the spec sheet, then they would have touted them. Instead, people see built in features and think "Oh, this has a compressor, I can save money." You're not saving money going that route. If you are doing voiceover content, save your money. Get an Audient ID4, a Rode NT1, and a few Waves Plugins (F6, MV2, WLM Plus, and NS1 if your environment is rough). You may not necessarily need to buy plugins if you know what you're doing, but those 4 make it idiot proof and get you worrying about content and not tinkering with your sound.

@@frankluo230 i agree with the build quality of the ID14. It is on another level compared to SSL TBH. I sold my SSL to get the ID14 because 1. It has audio loopback. 2. It has two monitor outputs. 3. Optical in for ADAT expansion. 4. Has better routing capabilities compared to SSL. One thing about the headphone jacks. while it is true that it has two available infront but the volume for both headphones jacks is only one. Overall the ID14 mkii is a beast and I don’t think there is an audio interface out there that can beat it at its price point. Heck! It’s not even a review, let alone an honest one. The guy hasn’t even heard the interface and he’s making a review. You can always see red flags when someone is reviewing a spec sheet instead of a product. Vintage gear has largely terrible specs, and that makes up a lot of the mojo. There is no review without listening A/B tests, an open discussion, and their own perspective thrown in for Socratic discussion. None of this was present here.

JK which you call the goat measured the Volt 2's actual EIN at -129dBu. But even that better number doesn't tell you how an audio interface performs overall. You need to actually hear it. Volt playback sounds clearly better than MOTU. Currently they cost just 10-20 euro bucks more than also inferior sound and quality Scarletts. Why should I pick them? Also, did you know the Audient you praise silently replaced the AD/DA chips when it ran out of the good AKM ADC stuff? Same for its current mystery DAC chips, and the iD14 mk2 is considered the same product as release. Care to bash them too at some point? Honestly checking every morning to learn UA's specs in order to bash a product shows you have issues. So keep doing that, here's a Volt spec you can bash on: -84 dB of THD+N on the instrument input. Have fun completely missing the point.

All these reviews on this channel are a bit too pessimistic and are not really reflecting the reality. The part about inexperienced user buying it is meh. The truth is that the preamp is pretty fine. The only reason the compressor isn't is that you can't access settings and these are ready presets that you can't tweak and also it's kind of noisy. It is untrue that there is a huge quality gap in audio recording between the Volt 2 interface and the other interfaces. In fact there is are only Steinberg UR series interfaces that are REALLY bad, and the rest are quite similar in terms of audio recording quality. So yeah.. Not bad at all in fact. But out of all the interfaces Audient interfaces are the best. Not by much from the rest but they are.

That EIN spec is so low as to be COMPLETELY meaningless. The gain spec spec is less meaningless, but I can think of absolutely no situation where a 3dB deficit in that range would be a deal breaker - MAYBE on an SM7 or a Royer, but you're probably already using a Cloudlifter on those mics, thus we're back to meaningless.

The volt 1 specd look decent for the price tbh. 112/111/111db dynamic range for mic/instrument/line and really low distortion measurments throughout (best in class I believe). Yes the EIN is rough which is a shame, if/how noticeable this will be depends on equipment and recording environment. Importantly though the headphone amp provided 84mw @ 32 ohms, which is much better than the motu m2's 22mw @32, and while the id14 mkii provides ~100mw into 32 ohms it has a 22ohm output impedance which basically makes it unusable with most headphones under 80 ohms (ideally 140 ohms). If the output impedance of the volt is low then the volt 1 and volt 2 look like a solid buy at least, not as good but still decent ad/da conversion but a better headphone amp than the m2/id14 (and ultimately this will matter more), and if the tube preamp emulation is decent maybe worth the extra £40 over the minifuse. But I'll wait for Julian Krause's full review. And yeah, unless the compressor is really good the 176/276 look like pretty bad value so far.

My only issue so far is the fact that these are basically 2i2/motu m2 competitors with a premium price tag. If I’m spending over $200 and especially $300, I’m going with a much better spec id4mkii/ssl2 or id14mkii/ssl2+. I’ve compared spec sheets between the Scarlett/m2 and in no way could I justify buying the volt over those two options. Perhaps if the volt allowed you to use the uad plugins then that would definitely be a bonus but as we all know that’s not a possibility

@@UndergroundSoundProductions imo it makes sense for people who a) need a decent headphone amp and have harder to drive headphones (as this means the m2 and id14 mkii aren't suitable), and/or really value the tube pre/compressor. From looking at forums latency seems to be really good, iirc 1.6ms @64 buffer/192khz The volt 1 is £120 which is £35 more than the scarlett solo (which has a complete garbage headphone amp) and the minifuse 1 (which is essentially just a better scarlett). If you fall into the above group than it makes sense. If not, then yeah the m2/audient is a better buy.

Anyone looking to buy this thing is going to buy the version with the compressor since they really hammered that specifically in their marketing. The cheapest option with the compressor is $250. An id4/ssl2 is $200. The comp/vintage option is so gimmicky. How are you going to use a compressor taht you have no control over (attack/release/ratio) and the vintage option is the same way imo. That’d be like saying you bought the focusrite for the air switch 💀 either way you slice it, I don’t see how anyone can rationally pick this over the other competition. I’m not sure if the Scarlett/m2/id4/14/ssl2 are iOS compatible, so let’s say any of those options are not, then I could see these volt interfaces being useful. I mean they for realll dropped the ball on this man

@@UndergroundSoundProductions the volt 1 and 2 should be judged separately than the 176/276. You're getting the exact same specs in the volt 1 as you are in the 276 which costs like 3x as much, just less inputs and no comp. Whether it's worth it or not depends on how it performs relative to competitors. And for the reasons I outlined above, I think the volt 1 and 2 are definitely viable options. Just because they marked the comp is irrelevant, these products still exist and can be purchased. They've done fine here, there's enough to make a £30 premium worth it. The 176/276 i will agree with you are pretty dissapointing. Honestly it feels like they should have been there own seperate product (like a Volt+ or something) and gotten a spec bump to make the price worth it and compete with the m2 etc. The fact that the specs are the same across the board for interfaces that cost 3x as much as the lowest one is silly, makes it much harder ot justify.

I also feel like the Arturia mini fuse is a better value proposition as well. It has near similar specs and in some ways actually outclasses the volt. Like in the gain/EIN, the Arturia has more gain at a lower EIN which will provide better preamp performance and it only costs $99 for the minifuse 1 :P I just can’t find myself backing the volt man. Nowadays the competition is sooo intense that these just don’t do it for me. The Apollo’s are another thing though obviously those have their bonuses but these are just wayy too underwhelming considering what else is out there with the competitive pricing

The Volt has a place, and gets you much closer to a polished sound for much less hassle. Leaves you a little room for further processing via plugins too.
