Thank you. I never knew this. I've turned off my main breaker twice. The house is 20 years old. Luckily I didn't have anything break. I'm keeping this new information in the brain bank. Thanks!

So may be that's what happened to my circuit breaker, although it wasn't the main breaker. I switched rhe breaker off and found out a minute later it wouldn't let me turn it back on. Great tip. All other videos on corcuit breakers blamed grounding short circuits or overloaded appliances but never blamed the fact that the circuit breaker could fail from how you have described. Thanks for this video.

I thought it would be smart to do this, then I asked a professional electrician and he said I didn't need to shut each breaker off first. I'm glad I didn't listen to him. Thx for the confirmation.

It seems obvious but after doing your work with everything off, would you turn on the main breaker switch and then place the ALL the individual breakers in the ON position? (In my case ALL individual breakers were in the ON position at the start) Thanks!

I just bought a house and I had to turn off the double pole breaker to the dryer but the circuit will not turn off. What could it be? Im going to call an electrician but I'm so confused on why the breaker has no effect on the circuit and I know it's the correct breaker. Please answer if you can thank you.

Researching for putting up a new doorbell and the directions say to turn off the breaker for it. Would they mean the whole thing like this? I haven’t gotten so far as to check if it’s labeled. If I could just figure out the one would it be safe to only turn off that? Or would I need to go through this and turn off everything including the main breaker? Also, what’s the purpose of turning off the main breaker if you turn all the individual switches off? Want to know this in case of emergency! Thanks so much.

Great questions! We always recommend not to take any of our advice but just use it for educational purposes only. We always recommend never working on an energized circuit or working in an energized panel. It is possible to verify that a single circuit is off with multiple forms of checking. Also the reason for turning off the main breaker after all the individuals is because the bus bar is still energized with potentially 240 volts present at many locations. Still yet often panels are hot at the main bar even when main breaker or fuse is pulled.

What is purpose of taking the picture and taping the breakers if you are going to switch everything off before main disconnect? Is that to keep certain things on like fridge circuit?
@electricianhub86
4 жыл бұрын
Excellent question! The purpose of taking the picture, is to make sure when you re-energize everything that you do not turn on Breakers that were off before you got there. Taking it a step further you could put a little bit of tape on Breakers that were already off just to ensure that you do not re-energize them when you flick everything back on. Sometimes when you're in a panel, there were breakers off before you got there. And sometimes there's a big reason why. It could be a dead short. Could be an old heater circuit in the wall. Unfortunately not everyone properly disconnects everything properly when they do remodeling! Thank you for the question!
