I've been using a Wise card for a while & agree with everything said in this video. I also use Revolut which is also very good. Wise has more fiat currencies but Revolut has crypto, a metal card option & a higher fee free Atm limit (with the metal card), disposable 1-use virtual cards for safe online purchases, & even a travel delay feature for free lounge access if your flight is delayed for more than 1 hour. I use both cards/services. & I think it's always a good idea to have multiple cards available just in case 1 card does get blocked for some reason, or lost/stolen. I try to never put all my eggs in one basket.

@@timjoygray Wise canceled my card 45 days before it was due to expire because they are upgrading some security and payment systems. The trouble is I am traveling. You know the reason I got the card, to travel. So even though they sent out email notices I couldn't get a new card since I was not at my US address. I called and they said they would not cancel the card and if I had trouble to call them. Of course, the card stopped working mid-June and I called back to hear that there was nothing they could do and I would have to get a new card. Well I planned to do that when I was back in the US in August. And No, they could not send a new card to a different address in Mexico. I had to get an electronic card. Great except it is very difficult to use an electronic card in Mexico. Grocery stores don't always take electronic cards. This is a total pain in the A$$.

As I travel nearly full time. I have set up an AP from my New Zealand bank to my Wise card every week. I keep a balance of around $3-4000 on my Wisecard. If I am running down my wisecard balance I just do a manual top up. At first I transfer from my home NZ Dollar account to the currency of the country I was in and used from that. I stopped doing that and just had each transaction in-the foreign currency be debited from my home currency. It makes little difference and is easier.

Hey Lloyd, love your content . . .Just curious if you have found taking cash out at international ATMs with Wise to be expensive? I may be reading it wrong, but it says on their site that after you withdraw your monthly limit (£200 if you are from the UK) they charge a low fixed fee , but a much higher variable fee of 1.75% charge for all money you take out after that? I could be misinterpreting how the variable fee is applied, but it seems that I'd frequently be incurring that variable fee and those see extraordinarily high - - almost like I am borrowing my own money. Which I wonder if that is what it really is, since they are not an actual bank? But maybe that hasn't been your experience?
@LloydandMandy

Hi Michele, yes there is a fee for withdrawing money after you reach the threshold, but I've found the fee to be minimal compared to other bank cards, as well as the fact that I know my card will not be shut off at random times has been a blessing.

I would only use a local ATM if I really needed to , ie up to the limit in an emergency , some have fees with any card and basically like Al Capone in a box, some countries they are down right dangerous to use and avoid using at all costs eg SA , don't go near one by yourself. Far better and safer to stock up on the local currency before you leave.

Between Wise & Schwab you'll be well covered> Schwab refunds all ATM fees... usually within 1-2 days > thankfully in some Countries (like Thailand) cash is still King so not opposed to traveling with significant cash (ensure the bills are large...100's & perfectly crisp/clean with absolutely no markings, folds or blemishes of ANY type) & converting upon arrival at the usual preferred exchange providers around town > the traditional credit card companies continue making things harder all the time in the name of protecting us from fraud > I think it's fair to consider it's all part of a larger agenda to transition to government digital currencies tbh > but that's another topic all together > regardless....g/l using conventional credit cards when traveling...no longer a given it'll be a smooth experience...even as you say on advance travel notice.. absolutely no excuse for that...& the fact you must call the card issuing Co vs them trying to reach you immediately as the transaction was denied > it certainly can lead to very unnecessary situations as you experienced. There may be others like that around. I can't get access to a card like that so I get around the fees by making manual withdrawals at the teller. How is using a card that neither refunds your ATM fees nor gives you any points for purchases any good? It does not provide any of the other benefits credit cards extend, such as hotel status, purchase protection, rental car insurance, special discounts, cash back, no foreign transaction fees, lounge access, etc. This makes ho sense other than you getting referral credits, and this is the only benefit you get. At least you should let your audience know that you are not completely unbiased when advertising this card.

I think you are missing the point. Credit cards are great for some big ticket items when you want insurance etc or you desperately need to defer payment and have credit.... But this is good for lots of small purchases and getting cash out but most of all for only being charged under 0.5% in fx fees. You can have all the ff pts and credit you like on a CC but are likely paying 2.5 to 3% for the privilege (nearly like a years interest). Do the maths and save your money and buy the bloody airfare from savings rather than give your hard earned money to the oligopoly banks! Plus added protection of only pre loading a certain amount at a time to avoid thieves having a field day. He could have explained it a little more emphatically!

Excellent video Lloyd! I had the same issues as you and started to use the Wise app and credit card about 16 months ago. It's indeed super easy to use and probably the cheapest too. Have a great day and greetings to Mandy
