Pro Tip: you have it backwards, it is designed to set the guide next to the size slice you want, then cut bread in the "same / closest groove" to the guide thus pushing the loaf against the guide after each slice. This way "all slices" are the same width, versus walking the blade down the different thicknesses or having to move the guide as you cut. Lol- took me a few loaves to realize this, but is the most consistent method. Enjoy!
@gabrielegori26
3 жыл бұрын
Excuse me kind sir but how do you keep pushing the loaf toward the guide without having to remove the slice every time? Your comment makes a lot of sense but looks slower than just walking the blade and letting the bread fall over albeit ending up with uneven slices.
@Violianom
3 жыл бұрын
@@gabrielegori26 The comment doesn't make sense to you even though you say it does. When you push against the guide, the slices aren't falling. You don't need to remove the slice everytime.. that's the whole point. It's held in place because you're keeping the whole loaf against the guide. You would just continue to put light pressure on the loaf whilst slicing the bread.
@alexcapek561

@@Violianom The OP said this his method will provide the same thickness slice but it only will if you remove the slice after each cut. If you don't remove the slices every time you're gonna have to continue moving the blade down each slot which increasingly makes larger slices of bread....get it now? and people are upvoting you god I hate KZitem comments

A year ago people didn't understand this very helpful comments 🤷♂️🤦♂️ If you look carefully (after putting the guide) you can cut 9 slices of similar size in a row who will be held, first by the guide then by eachother and when you reach your last one you will have to sadly take on yourself and physical lift those 9 very heavy slices of bread than reset the bread next to the guide for your next 9 slices. Sweet Lord Jesus Christ almighty! That's so much work😲 🤣🤣🤣 I'm gonna buy one today on Amazon because I'm fed up to cut my bread with a wooden spoon as a guide....no I won't explain but yes it work like a charm.
@KailuaDoug

I've had one of these for a few years and it's perfect for my homemade bread. You actually have more than just two thicknesses. There is the (a) thin, (b) thicker and (c) double-thin, which is a little thicker than (b). Just skip one slot in the (a) thin guide area and make it twice as thick as a single thin. This is great for cutting bread to make french toast.

I use an upside-down lid from a hard plastic box to cut even bread slices. It's about 5" wide and 12" long and is made of hard plastic. It's a tad over a half inch deep for slices just a tiny bit thinner than standard store bought bread. I simply upend the loaf over one end of the upside down-lid and saw away with a bread knife. I get perfectly uniform slices and then return the lid to its box so I don't have an extra gadget to store. You could probably also use a wood or metal lid but you might damage the edges if it's wood and metal might not be sturdy enough. The dimensions don't really matter as long as it is wide and long enough for your loaf of bread and not too wide to accommodate your knife. Look around your house... you might find the perfect lid and it won't cost you a dime!
@davidlevine1697

i bought a plastic slicing guide but found the slices to be thicker than i needed, and it is also to flexible to cut accurately when slicing a dense puillman loaf of 7 grain bread with an even denser crust. no big loss as it only cost me $2.50. having been a union carpenter before becoming a chef i even checked out mitre boxes but none of them had the hight needed to accomidate a loaf of bread properly. so i spent a few a few minutes roaming around the house, looking for anything that might work, and low and behold ... the wooden lid from a cigar box came into view and it works perfectly in the manner in which you descibre. i now get perfect even slices that are half the thickness of a standard slcie of sandwich bread. having been a professional chef since 1975 i like to collect gadgets and hand tools for cooking. I find most modern ones (plastic) to be poorly made, adress a problem that isn't real, and become clutter in a junk drawer. the palstic slicing guide just weent into the recylcling bin to be made into another piece of useless palstic. 🙃

I've used this slicer for about a year and a half. I have one criticism and that is the plastic bread stop is not rigid. It bows in the center and you will get a cut that is not uniform. I push my bread against the stop and cut. I do not support it from the back and cut from the front. I wish the stop could be made from a sturdier material such as bamboo.

The loaf is much narrower than the width of the side fences. Thus, one has to hold the bread to prevent it from moving from side to side with the bread slicing knife. For a tender loaf, that may not be too difficult. For a denser loaf, maybe kept in the refrigerator to preserve it, holding the loaf would be more difficult to do.

Notice how short the knife strokes are? When you cut bread without a guide, the strokes are generally much longer, like a sawing action. What the video doesn't show is the backstroke when the knife comes out of the furthest guide and then the following forward stroke when it misses the slot and impacts on the wooden tine and snaps it off. At which point you throw the whole thing in the bin. A basic design fault with all guides of this type. However a way to combat this is to buy a longer bread knife at additional expense.

use a sharp knife and let the blade do the work. This gizmo is a nice idea if you are cutting a whole loaf for a bunch of sandwiches, but how often do you do that. Figure the cost of the item, devided by the numbers of hours you have to work to pay for it vs the time saved during its lifetime... if you use this daily to cut whole loaves, maybe you would get value, otherwise, it takes seconds to just cut bread manually, but then you have to know how to cut bread. It isn't just grab a blade and saw through like you are building a dog house.
