What I love about you renovating these mobile homes is that you are taking the time to create a safe and lovely home that people can live in. This brings me back to your Kokomo mobile home. I enjoy seeing the progress on the renovation since the majority of time, these shelters either end up condemned or in landfills. It’s nice to see this structure will have a life after its face lift.

I live in Georgia. Parts of Florida and Georgia are often called Tornado Alley. Now I understand why so many mobile homes are destroyed by those winds. 2x2s rafters and roofs that aren't secured in-place throughout. Years ago I drove past a wreck on the interstate involving half of a double-wide being towed and a boat being towed. I couldn't understand how so much damage occurred to the mobile home when the boat remained on it's trailer. Now it makes sense. Happy Mother's Day Ashley!

I have never seen the structure of a mobile home before. I'm surprised to see that it doesn't have sheathing on the roof and exterior walls and that it has 2x2 for the roof support rather than 2x4. It lasted this long so it must be good enough. Thank you for the video!

I've heard that a lot of pre-1976 mobile homes had the walls framed in 2 X 2s as well, but the federal standards that kicked in that year required 2 X 3 framed walls and at least 3/8" of drywall on the walls (though apparently not the ceilings). I've also read that 2 X 3 framed mobile homes can be made to pass Florida's strictest hurricane codes with only 2 X 3s in the walls, but they need a lot of steel bracing and something strong like heavy plywood, stucco or cement board on the exterior. 2 X 3s don't have a lot of compression strength, but they do have a lot of tensil strength, which makes most of the difference in wind.

My mobile home is a 1967 Shults, 2 bd, 1 bath, and has had a full washer and dryer nook, that was added into the hallway via the spare bedroom, making it a very small bedroom. But it is just me so it works fine. In the past six years, it has gotten a lot of love, a new furnace, and hot water heater, the roof taped and resealed, the underbelly totally gutted all ductwork resealed and then closed with 1.5" insulation board that is foiled on both sides; I have taken out the old flooring and put down a new underlayment and then covered all the flooring with a 6" x 36" peel and stick lament flooring. I then painted the home and shed to match, I was having some electrical issues and had to have the breaker box replaced and which was expensive $1,666.08, as I couldn't do it myself as my COPD makes it too hard to breathe and do the work. I have mapped out all the electrical myself and color-coded it and extended one line so I can put a window AC in the living room. I was thinking of having all the windows replaced, but afraid of the can of worms that might open. You do such great work and I enjoy everything your channel does.

people can hate on mobile homes and they may not be the best, but sometimes people need a home and it's all they can manage. What gets me is how much lot owners charge to park a home. The lot rents have gotten crazy...It's a never ending stay poor cycle. I have lived in mobile homes and liked them. I have lived in shacks and liked them. I lived in a wonderful modern well built house and it was my least favorite place to have lived. I lived in a nice ranch style home...tried to give it some personality...it was ok. I like older houses with character and if the floors aren't level, I am ok with that.

Thank you so much for answering one of my burning questions about why electrical wires supposedly can’t be fished through mobile home ceiling spaces, thus allegedly requiring only the use of conduits or wires running up walls and across ceilings for post-manufacture light fixtures. I called BS on this myth, but everyone I spoke with (including my mobile home remodeling contractor) said it was impossible to fish wires. Of course, no one could/would tell me why! I’m very satisfied with learning my experience and logic were correct. Thank you, again. (FYI, I’m in SoCal so no need for a vapor barrier, except to hold up the old blown-in insulation from 1984.) PS: It’s wild that the metal roofs are only fastened along sidewalls and peak.

@pcno2832

That's a great explanation and I'll bet it will be helpful to some of the people watching. There are some good reasons not to vent an attic space: less heat loss, less opportunity for insects and other vermin to get in and less vulnerability to fire. But it's so important to keep moist inside air out of such spaces that I'd be reluctant to put anything up there that involves piercing the ceiling, though I'm sure wiring can be perfectly sealed if the person installing it is careful. Those flexible HVAC ducts can leak at any time and probably the worst thing anyone could do is vent a bathroom fan into a space like that There didn't seem to be a huge amount of insulation in this roof and I wonder if blowing in more would a viable option; without any venting, there is no worry about the added insulation blocking any vents.

I kind of like how simple these seem to be built. I hadn’t thought about snow load, but that’s probably important for people living in snowy climates. Something that I’ve wondered is why single-wide mobile homes don’t usually have an overhanging roof and double-wides usually do. It seems like leaks into the walls would be more likely without the overhangs. It’s something I’ve been paying attention to when looking at properties because the siding of the homes without overhangs is often warped.
