It's not going to win awards, but it is a fun underdog story despite not all of the jokes landing. The biggest cringe is the romantic subplot that has no chemistry and is really forced. Fun Fact: Chief Engineer CPO Howard says at one point "This is what I live for, DBF!." DBF stands for Diesel Boats Forever.

It wasn't a romantic sub plot...when she kissed him it was was more of a friendly thanks for believing in me deal. She was just hyped and grateful for what he did for her.. The irony of this movie is that conventional diesel boats actually DO present a significant threat to a modern nuclear navy. A modern nuclear submarine can never go completely silent because of the needs of cooling the reactor. However a diesel-electric boat is virtually undetectable when she switches to her electric batteries. Their biggest limitations are their short range and they can't remain submerged for very long (whereas a nuclear boat can essentially operate submerged so long as she has fuel). Incidentally, the guy who orders the gum was actually a bit of a gag: He played the sonar technician on SeaQuest DSV, which aired at the time the movie released. The end credits were performed by The Village People. If you want a classic submarine comedy, check out Operation Petticoat with Carey Grant and Tony Curtis (Jamie Lee Curtis' daddy). The best part is almost everything in the movie actually DID happen in real life during WWII...just not to the same boat, or even on the same war patrol.

Having served on submarines in the Navy I am often asked which submarine movie is the best, most accurate, etc. I say "Down Periscope" every single time. Sure it's not meant to be taken seriously and the technical aspects are all wrong (I find a new inaccuracy every time I watch it), but no movie gets those right. What this movie does that no other one does is completely NAIL the personality of the crew. I've known about six real-life versions of every man on the Stingray from the overzealous XO to the sloppy cook to the cocky-but-terrible gambler to the guy who just wants to get kicked out of the Navy. A solid effort, whether it was intentional or not.

I'm a Navy veteran, and in bootcamp we had a training exercise where a few water pipes burst and we have to put clamps on the pipes before the space we're in floods, while moving the equipment from the flooding space to another so the equipment doesn't get wet. Our team lead sent a guy, I'll call him John, to put a clamp over the biggest busted pipe. When he started to put the clamp on, the water in the space wasn't even covering our boots, then a few minutes later the water was up to our knees as the rest of us we're trying to move all equipment out without it getting soaked. John wasn't even half way done getting the clamp on. My team lead & I looked at John, then looked at each other, and he said "Poindexter, get up there and take over!" I powered through the water grabbed John by the belt, pulled him off, he was small enough to completely go under water. I told him to get on the line and move equipment. John was pretty pissed. But I got the clamp on in a under a minute. And when I jumped down, I quoted this movie, telling my team lead, "Now that was fun!"
@zobek530

An example of a running joke throughout the movie is when anyone does a sub/boat-wide announcement (passing the word). In the movie, they use multiple comms devices, and you sometimes hear a whistle piped, but the whole crew hears the announcement. In reality, the Boatswain of the Watch would key the 1MC, pipe for crew attention, and either pass the word, or hand the mic to the person that will speak. The 1MC is the only one that will be heard in every space on the ship / boat (sub). The tiny squawkbox with the twist-lever and push buttons along the bottom are room-to-room only. The more buttons pushed in, the more rooms (spaces) that will hear the message. This is my favorite running jokes in the movie.

I saw this in the theater and the next day, when I was doing the tourist thing in San Francisco, there was the submarine docked at the pier. It was open for tours so I got to go inside. It's an actual WWII submarine, the USS Pampanito. When I was there, it still had the paint scheme from the movie. They did film everything inside the sub-those weren't sets. And it's even more cramped than it appears on screen. Just imagine everything being about 25% more cramped than it appears, and that's what it's really like. It's still docked in San Francisco today and serves as a WWII submarine museum.

The writer of this film (who passed away in 2018) is Hugh Wilson, a television legend who created the series "WKRP in Cincinnati" and also directed and wrote "Police Academy" (his first film) which led to him getting to direct "First Wives Club". I suggest you watch another of his great comedies, "Stroker Ace" which stars Burt Reynolds, Ned Beatty, Jim Nabors (Gomer Pyle) and Loni Anderson, who became a star on WKRP and was briefly married to Burt. It is about a NASCAR driver so is similar in style to "Smokey and the Bandit", "Cannonball Run" and "Hooper".
