Watching RSPB Snettisham Knot Spectacular murmuration, with thousands of birds #sea #birds #walking
Today’s video, takes me to the RSPB Snettisham reserve in North Norfolk. I’m here to watch the Knot spectacular murmuration. This happens when the mudflats get covered by the fast incoming spring tide and all the waders get pushed up into the air as their food source gets covered over. Around 400,000 birds each year travel down from the Artic to spend winter here feasting on shellfish and worms. The wash, which measures 12 miles across, by 15 miles long, provides endless food for all the hungry birds.
Sitting beside the Wash are Lagoons. These are former gravel pits, used in WW2 to get building materials to make runway’s for the American and British servicemen.
The RSPB were given the opportunity to purchase these pits in 1972 and they’ve just celebrated 50 years of providing a safe haven for millions of birds over those 50 years.
Along the extensive site are 4 bird hides. The newest one, aptly named Knots Landing, was added in 2020 at a cost of £280,000.
I walked 14,000 step’s during my time here, which is just slightly under 6 miles.
