Nice to see Sith Audio sponsors back in action! I would never dream to upgrade my RP600M to the 2nd generation, there are a lot of very 'interesting' speakers in the $700-1,000 range and if/when tired of the 600 I'll go for a totally different sound. At less than $400 the originals are bargain compared to the II. Nice fun video, Mr. Randy!

According to Audio Science Review of the first gen RP600, there was a massive dip in the crossover frequency indicating poor crossover design and integration of the horn-loaded tweeter and woofer. Now that you've mentioned Adele's voice being more forward, it seems that they have finally addressed that issue.
@ValNanovsky

Dude, love the sincerity of your review! Keep 'em coming! A BIG fan of your channel! P.S. I completely agree with you about the forward bass on the first version, which could be described even as very slight flubbiness - when you don't have a sub and your amp tends to be on the warmer side. For those who don't quite like that, one option is to eq it, or in my case, I simply adjust the crossover so that my subwoofer handles anything under 80 Hz. Then I simply adjust the volume of my sub to taste - which can actually be done for either version of the speakers - but I digress. I think BOTH are excellent speakers for the money and I will never regret buying them. Cheers.

Thanks Randy, bought a pair of RP8000F's 6 months ago, and was worried as soon as I did Klipsch would intro an updated version. (Knew they had been in production a while). Sure enough the mk2 came out and I was bummed I bought early. Your review alleviates that suckered feeling I had I had traded away a pair of the older RF82 ll , and the RP8000 sound sweeter in the horn and a better presentation. So I'll enjoy the RP8000 and not worry about upgrading.

There is a huge hole in the frequency response in the midrange of the 1st version, the 2nd has smoothed it out. I think the magic of the first one is that what is an outright mistake in the version version actually sounds good in a way.
@stevengagnon4777
10 ай бұрын
Funny thing is Randy really describes the difference exactly what I predicted. They fix the hole in the midrange but from what I understand there is a phase shift...that forward midrange he mentioned. The new woofer has a bigger voice coil ( big is not necessarily better) that's probably why he preferred the older model the punchier base the smaller voice coil has a better controlled magnetic field and the coil also has a tighter controled electromagnetic field. Fix the cross over in the first generation with a little better parts with a little more overlap and keep it fairly simple and you could have a winner.

We all know the Klipsch signature is brighter and more foreword and the M II is no exception. Definitely less so than the original 600 M. It feels more balanced. Supposedly has an upgraded cap for the tweet. Compared them both to a KEF Q350. 350 was very nice, but sounds muted when compared to the Klipsch. Compressed content is such a mixed bag, often lacking in one area or another and we expect our monitors to sound good zeroed out.

While I logically don't want to believe in burn-in I can't deny that IRL burn in makes a difference. And a few hours doesn't do it, I find it takes at least 96 hours. Some speakers take more, like Q-Acoustics. (Best way to do this is to play a good mix of music and sweeps and noise, mono at around 70dB. Reverse polarity on one speaker and then face the speakers towards each other at an inch or less apart. They pretty much cancel each other out in terms of volume which means you can leave them running for a week without driving everyone crazy in the house). So if you like the brand new first gen because it's brighter, that actually might mellow out a little over time as the speakers break in.

I modified my original RP-600Ms by replacing the 3.9uF tweeter cap with 10uF. This virtually eliminates the scoop at 1.5 KHz. Funny the things one listens for. Dire Straits, Private Investigations. Towards the end I'm listening for a cats meow followed by the tinkling of glass, like a bottle breaking. Very indistinct but it's there. I only have bottom dollar gear, so it could be that with a "good" system, the tinkling sound of glass might be as clear as day. Dunno, never investigated that probability.. But you're right Randy, it's those subtle differences we use to assess the perceived quality of kit... One song I've always had trouble with, and it might just be a peculiarity with my hearing, is Song For Guy, Elton John. At the end he says "Life, isn't ev-ery thi-ing." All I've ever got out of it is "Life, isn't it very fair." Folks I've asked all say the same. It's the former. I can hear the former a bit better because I know what it's supposed to be, but I still hear the latter if I'm not paying attention. Maybe I need to get out more...

Anyway, I'm glad I got them when I did, because they are now out of stock and the MK II is all you can get. If you find the original version in stock in a store somewhere, SPEAK UP and ask the store to give you their best price. Most places will cut a good deal to get rid of old stock. All you have to do is ask. Shyness won't save you money.

Thanks for your honesty and the focus on Subjective opinion. I wonder if your front end might be something to play with, and the selected test tracks changed, to add some depth to the test, based on other comparisons made by other evaluators. And it seems you didn't include any Chet Atkins records, so yeah, man. I just bought the original rp600ms brand new in July 2024 for $349 with free shipping. I believe I would prefer them to the 2's other than the price. The originals are criticized for a frequency dip in the midrange area of the sound spectrum that many people prefer anyway. There is an " unpleasant ", if you will area of midrange that people don't like to hear , and that is where the original 600m's had a " dip " in the crossover from woofer to tweeter. I would rather have that dip myself. I think other people would too. Back in the equalizer days many people turned that part of midrange down, if not completely off. I think I would prefer the originals because of that. The 2's took that midrange dip out and made it a more flat response in the about 1kz to 2.5 kz frequency range. That is a particularly " annoying " part of midrange to many people. I have no doubt that the original 600ms sound is what I would prefer because I like a dip in the 1kz to 2.5 kz frequency anyway. I, like many other people, don't like 1kz to 2.5 kz anyway. I don't want to hear that part of the midrange sound frequency anyway. That part of midrange is annoying.

I'm very curious about the sibilance as well. I didn't know that was a thing (I didn't really know quality audio set-up until, ironically, I purchased my 2018 Volvo S90 a few years back equipped with the Bowers and Wilkins system). I realized I could listen to any Hi Definition/MQA song with the volume turned up quite high (near to the point of starting to hurt my ears) and I was still crystal clear, with no signs of distortion. The only thing I didn't like in that system was while the bass was full, it lacked as much *punch* and responsiveness as I'd like. My reference was 17 seconds into Domination by Band-Maid or Good Goodbye by One OK Rock when it's straight vocals and a percussion back-up. While present, it didn't move the air as forcefully as I'd like. However, for every song I threw at that system in regards to highs/treble, I swear I couldn't get it to crack anywhere in treble before my ears were telling me to turn it down. For the highs I threw Karajan's Requiem, Tu Si Sabes Quererme by Natalia LaFourcade, We Are by One OK Rock, Kimini Muchuu by Utada Hikaru (Album Version), all trying to get a crack from the highs and couldn't do it. I could listen to music for hours in that cabin (which we took many several hour road trips in that car) and not once did I have to turn the music down, nor did I feel like my ears were "resting" after having to stop for fuel stops. I'm okay with bass not being the most dominant frequency range in the speaker as I can match a sub if required. However, I want clarity, neutrality and slightly forward vocals. I've heard the mark 2's do much better closer to a wall on the back panel than perhaps you'd usually give them, along with a slightly wider distance between the two with a slight toe-in, which makes sense as they have that forward vocal trait. Z-Reviews has a great review of these where he tried them in various set-ups/rooms and found what was great for him, which is similar to what I'm looking to achieve out of these speakers.

Randy, I picked up a pair of original RP-600M's last month to replace my Optimus Pro LX5 speakers. I'm very happy you did a head to head comparison of the originals vs. the V2s. Coming from the LX5's the sonic difference is night and day on the plus side. Couple that with a $250 discount over the newer model, the original RP600Ms were a big win for Me! 😊😊

Bought first edition . Wasn’t happy, felt they had a hole in the middle of sound , very dynamic and I mean very . After further research on frequency response measurement from reviews it was confirmed that there in middle a huge drop . Sent them back went with warfhdales 225 and very happy with them a lot better than klipsh

Two words... "Ear fatigue." The moment I hear anything playing on the first gen, my ears start getting irritated. The second series, don't get that at all. Thank God!

I purchased a pair of Klipsch RP160M’s last year, which were replaced by the RP600M. I would love to see a comparison between these, and maybe even the Mii series.

I still have Klipsch RP-160M and i don't care to upgrade every 5-6years whole system. People who have Klipsch Reference Series RB-81 II with 8" woofer cone probably happy to these days

I have a hard time taking independent advice from someone who is hocking “audiophile wood clamps”. As if that’s a real thing. Curious how these differ from regular wood clamps.

Maybe Klipsch., is getting away from their house sound?

Thank you for a great video! The way I see (hear) it, the original sounds real with all the liveliness and realism of music. The "updated" II version, on the other hand, reminds me of how the Noise Reduction system worked. If you'd recall it, it was simply shaving off all the noise, including the true essence of real sound, making the listening experience boring and flat. After comparing the two, I no longer want to replace the original Klipsch RP-600M. Like what cheapaudioman said: keep the original!

I have the RP 160Ms, the precursor to the 600Ms and MIIs and unless I’d listen to all 3 side by side I doubt I’d find the difference enough to sell the 160s for either of the other 2. Right now NewEgg has the 160s for a screaming buy at $195/pair vs $700 for the 600MIIs….I know what I’d buy🥴

I just picked up a pair of 160s from Newegg for $195. It’s hard to believe that you could find a better pair of speakers for under $200.

Love this. I've been thinking about the OG 600Ms for my bedroom rig since they made such a splash a few years back. At $397 a pair delivered it's truly a no-brainer. BTW, I'd encourage anyone who hasn't tried Tidal to sign up for that 3-month trial. Talk about a no-brainer...

Here's an even bigger secret: the RP500M is better than the 600M. True story!

I have them and tried with my 90’s Sony f117r 30w amp and really liked it - the midrange and clarity was awesome, but the bass seemed weak. I’ve got a good deal on a Marantz pm7200 (early 00’s)and the bass response is much better, but and the top end is too warm sounding and sounds almost rolled off with the dial on max and the mids too warm. It doesn’t make sense to me that a cheap entry level amp sounds better. Would it make sense to take to it to a tech to diagnose it or maybe it’s just the nature of the amp?

Thanks Randy, I have bought some of the discontinued Klipsch at your advice, 6 pair plus a center channel. Out of all pairs the r-14m image the best and they are 3 generations old, but still available new. Your reviews are very valuable to us. Glad to see your channel prospering.

Hi Randy, Lowe your videos 👍 Did you take some time to “warm up” those new m2’s, or comparing brand new straight out of the box ? It may sounds funny, but when i bought my new 600M’s (1-st gen) a year ago - straight out the box (first day) the overall sound was a bit different then after week. I was thinking to bring them back, butt after few days starts “come alive” in a good way. Wood be interesting to compare between brand new and used !!!

Technically, I would consider the RP175M to be the 1st generation of this speaker. The main difference between the 175M and the 600M is that the 175M had a built in plinth. I’m one who doesn’t like hearing cabinet resonances so I’d probably prefer the RP600M Mk2.

Hey Randy - Thanks for the review. I guess what I have learned over the last several months is that I'm quite far from being an audiophile. I have no skill in being able to plug-in a set of speakers and tell if they are in-phase, out of phase, have dips, peaks or valleys or anything else that is commonly discussed in articles, charts and/or reviews about these Klipsch RP600Ms. I suspect that like myself, this is also true for many others. It may sound small and but I really do appreciate your descriptions especially how you reference points in songs that you enjoy listening to as well as the time you spend talking about what is different from speaker to speaker. That at least in my opinion is very helpful. If you say these are a steal at $400 bucks thats my queue to take your years of experience and knowledge, and trained ear, as a green light. Thanks again.

The original has a U shaped frequency response with a large suck out in the midrange which would drive me mad but seemingly lots of folks like it. Go figure.

thanks, randy - this comparison couldn't be better timed. i'm updating a room / system and literally have been going back-and-forth on the mk1's or mk2's. was leaning toward mk2's until this video. need to decide soon, but haven't listened to either. now i'm leaning towards mk1's to try them out while still available. the lower cost is also very compelling. again, really appreciate this video. 👍

Please can we go to a 4 speaker setup? Why is this not talked about more? 2 speaker system can’t do it all. It’s the same old thing, over and over. ‘You get this but you don’t get that.’ We need a speaker revolution.

Hi, I've got 600m for 5 years now. I was blasting house music (really loud) and all of a sudden left speaker woofer is dead (only tweeter sound). Any suggestions would really help. Should I upgrade to 600m II? :) Thanks and love your channel.
