Your video saved me substantial repair bills. I had black metal gas pipe for the gas line. Disconnected at the union and it came off pretty easy with two pipe wrenches. I also didn't have the nipple that yours had on the gas valve, so I used the end of a ratchet instead of a screwdriver to pry the thermostat box off. Thanks for the tips and if you make it to Illinois I got a 6pk waiting on you for posting the video.

Thank you so much for posting the video. I had the same problem with my Whirlpool gas water heater a couple of days ago. Luckily, the gas control valve was still under warranty, and the replacement valve was overnighted to me the next day for free. After successfully installing and checking for gas leaks, it’s back to normal. A few advices for other viewers: 1. It looks scary but don’t be afraid. You can do it! 2. Take your time and follow the installation instructions. 3. Open all hot water faucets afterwards for a few minutes to drain out dirty water. Hot showers never feel this good!

Last night I lost my hot water. It was leaking. I found your video and the leak you had was excately what mine looked like! Well Im a recently single gal & have no mechanical abilities. Your step by step on this makes me feel like I can try to fix it myself. Called plumbers & the cheapest estimate I got was $850.00.

Just one BIG bit of advice. DO NOT IGNITE THE BURNER BEFORE CHECKING FOR GAS LEAKS. Tighten everything else, spray it with soapy water, open the gas valve and check for leaks. You can turn the knob to pilot and push it in to let gas flow into the tank, but do not use the ignitor button. If that leak had been bigger it could have ignited.

Thanks for sharing your work with us- though I could not do this myself. I am just getting drips from the thermostat box. Why now? A repair guy installed a valve on the hat water line for my humidifier. (We had been using the cold water line with little success).

You sure can find almost anything on KZitem. Overnight I had the same exact event with my Honeywell thermo. 80+ gallons of water on my basement floor when I discovered it this morning. Had plumber come - that rubber probe had split on mine, similar to yours. He replaced the thermo with another Honeywell unit - a newer one with a metal probe. Plumber says he's seen this a number of times. Seems like a poor design to me and cost me time and some basement carpet. Seems the new design is Honeywell's admission that the rubber probe was a bad design.

There is a class action lawsuit against Honeywell for that gas control valve. I work for a water damage company and we bill Honeywell directly when these valves pour water all over the house. They pay for the damages and repair. it's a major problem and they pay. many plumbers seem to not know this.

Just ruined my ceiling and some stuff in my gameroom/storage room 2 days ago . Still drying up and have a mess of insulation sheet rock and maybe 3 computers and other items that got water logged to chunk after someone comes out here to look at it . I contacted the consumer blog and they may send me an attorney and estimator to see what all can be done . And still with no hot water .. grrrrr !!

When I described this problem to the Home Depot plumbing dept, the guy thought I was crazy. How could it leak from the thermostat itself? Whoever designed a plastic tip probe must have been drunk. That plastic part at the tip of the probe was not made to last.

Mine failed the exact same way and the whole unit is less than 3 years old! When I called the number on the tank she asked a few questions and said that it was out of warranty but they overnighted a new thermostat, sounds like admission that they are faulty!

Gas is not connected to the thermostat. That's the gas valve. Thermostat controls the temperature by switching on the gas valve.
@BestLittleStudio

It is both actually, it is both the control valve and the thermostat.
