First video on my search! Rheem Performance Platinum heater 2-3 years old. My thermostat was set on B, and the frequency of the pilot light going out has risen in the past few months,. It started with high winds a couple months ago, and I figured that was the cause. A few nights ago it went out for no obvious reason, and this morning it went out with no winds at all. Now I have it set to A. I'll follow up (unless I completely forget!) within a month, I hope. Maybe sooner for interim reports, or if it goes out. My only other suspect is soot build-up on the thermocouple... we had that on the thermopile in our fireplace a few years ago. If you don't hear from me in a month, you can assume it worked. My wife is researching how to tie a noose... I suppose she is just curious. Right??

Sadly, the pilot went out again on a still evening. Next step: remove and clean the burner.

(Edited for typo in the voltages) One more update: I was watching the thermocouple voltage where it connected to the thermostat. It was between 200 and 250 mv DC when working, but I saw the voltage dropping over half a minute or so, indicating the pilot had gone out and the thermocouple was cooling. I relighted with a bit more holding the ABC knob down than usual. Sigh. I have a replacement gasket (mine has a sealing gasket for the burner assembly) on order; the plate is stamped with notice to replace the gasket if the door is removed. I had to buy the silicone gasket directly from the Rheem website for about 30 dollars. Better than a gas or CO leak, I suppose. I will try to update this in a week or so.

What temperature setting did you eventually settle on that seems to work? I thought you said in the video you were going to post a photo of where it is set to but I didn't see that. Mine has gone out three or four times in the last month or two. I have mine at the HOT setting which is at the 9 o'clock position on the thermostat dial. Hopefully your solution may help depending on what setting you are using and having success with. Thank you in advance!

Please see 0:56 where I show the dial set to A. On mine, it was in between B and C when I was having problems initially. After I set it to A it's been good for a few years now. If you're at the HOT, that is below the A so what I would check is the temperature of your water coming out of the faucet. Mine at A is around 137 degrees. If yours is hotter than that, turn your dial down even more to see if it helps. If that doesn't work, check the airflow getting to the burner. Hope this helps.

Do you know if there are water heaters that are more intelligently designed than the Rheem? Seriously, having the push the ignition switch over and over again, not getting a blue light, not being able to see a flame clearly, etc.... Is there anything better out there?
@TeamDIYNow

I personally have only dealt with Rheem water heaters, but there are others in the market from AO Smith, Bradford etc. The problem is a lot of the tank water heaters use very similar thermostats from Honeywell, etc so you may see some of the same problems regardless of the brand. Tankless water heaters are designed differently, so if you're looking into something designed differently you may want to check them out.

Damn! I have mine set on HOT. I can’t believe anyone can handle anything hotter. It’s scalding at the HOT setting. Same water heater and Honeywell controller.

Talk to the wife ha...the water is practically boiling when she is in the shower! I agree this thermostat is very hot, and I think that is what causes the problem with the water heater as it gets way too hot causing it to turn the pilot off.

On my to-do list for this summer: insulate the copper pipes in the crawl space, and add an anti-scald valve to the bathroom supplies. The kitchen dishwasher likes it hot but showers don't. I realize most houses don't have readily accessible pipes (there is enough room to almost stand where the changes will be done) and that I am really lucky in that way.

Replaced every part possible and turned the water heater lower, still kept going out. Finally had gas company come in and tweak gas pressure up a small amount. Hasn’t gone out since.

Our hot water heater is 1.5 years old. Plumber was saying 250.00 for thermostat control. We have had to relight about every two months. Is this product an issue?
@TeamDIYNow

I do believe there are some issues with this Honeywell thermostat but I'm sure no manufacture is going to admit. You can also try to turn down the dial like I showed in this video as it may work as well. If it doesn't, and you only had the water heater for 1.5 years contact Rheem as depending on which version it will have up to a 10-year warranty.

Jan 17, 2024 only lukewarm from hot water tap! (Rheem RC PVS 180E2 50 US Gal. Automatic spark ignition system, no PILOT. Installed Feb 2016. mfg date 02 Sep 2015) Setting was between A & B. 'Six flashes, pause then one flash' = 'failed trial for ignition', which means "The lights indicate failed ignition which is usually caused by a (pilot) igniter problem." I unplugged the water heater, waited about a minute then plugged it back. The exhaust fan came on immediately and about 15 seconds after .. . . that beautiful sound - 'vooom'! (The gas igniting). It's been 6 hours since and all seems fine, only one flashing light every 4 seconds which is normal operation! Jan 18th: 8 flashes, pause then 4 flashes:Valve fault detected.Time to call the Service guy? But I came across this video and lowered the temperature to between HOT & LOW (middle of the first 2 dots below HOT).Jan 19th: After about 16 hours, Hot water is hot enough, actually 131F. I will leave the setting as is for now and measure and lower as necessary in 24 to 48 hours. Thanks all for your inputs.

Check the grate under burner. They get clogged with dust and cause the pilot to shut off. No airflow.

Yea I agree that was the first thing I checked and even replaced the burner on mine and it still didnt work. A few years ago I stumbled upon an article that talked about these Honeywell thermostats being defective (atleast the model year I had). From what I gathered is the thermostat was setting the temp a lot higher than what the dial showed, so the safely switch will constantly turn off the pilot light because its too hot. You could clearly replace the thermostat as well, but at the time I wasn't sure it was bad so I just turned down the heat and it has worked for 3 years now.

The thermometer on mine doesn't seem to have any status lights at all. Is there a battery in it that is draws power from and is it possible to replace it?
@TeamDIYNow
5 ай бұрын
It really depends on the water heater. Some gas water heaters use electricity as well (use a resistance element to light the pilot and burner). With that said, the electricity is only needed to start the pilot, meaning if its on and the electric goes out the water heater will still work. On the other side, some gas water heaters use a standing pilot which does not require electricity...on these water heaters they use a thermopile that operates off the burner to give power to the flashing light. There is no battery needed on the thermostat. So if the light is off, it could just mean the burner is out...but again if you have one connected via electric make sure its getting power. Hope this helps.

Check the vents to make sure they are not clogged. Some will stay on for years by just turning down the heat setting which is just bypassing the questionable thermostat and others may need repaired. My guess the core problem with these thermostats is they give off incorrect high temp readings which triggers the safety feature to shut off pilot. If that reading is somewhat in range, you can get by with the temp setting being lowered (mine hasn't went off in 3 years now)...if its way off then you may need to replace the thermostat. Good luck.
