You might want to backwash with softened water from your fresh water tank. The benefit of the backwash is to remove contaminants from your softener, it wont immediately show a benefit, but it should help extend the useful life of the resin by a dramatic amount. This would mostly depend on how effective the pre-filter is. If it is a good filter and removes almost all of the contaminants, you can probably skip backwashing or greatly reduce the frequency. But if you do backwash, it would work better if you used softened and filtered water.

A VERY GOOD SUGGESTION!! Most rigs could easily be set up to do this, although some rigs may not generate enough pressure from weaker water pumps. Thanks for your comment...I'll definitely incorporate that into my tests.

Is it a double female coupling like you said or double male coupling?

Yes, the plastic coupling is a double-female which, normally, would screw into the male threads of the tank’s outlet. But, since I’ve converted the entire system to quick-connects, the threads become reversed; hence putting the males into that double-female in order to make the correct connection into the outlet.

To high of back flow can wash some resin beads out so you monitor what is coming out the in side then lower the flow.

Thanks for the comment, Dan. The way the OTG tank is designed, it’s never been a problem when properly performed; especially when a regulator is used. Also, running a 3-stage filter naturally reduces the flow. FYI, this is a direct quote from the manufacturer’s instructions.: Turn the water on full stream. (If the flow completely stops, turn the water off, tap the tank against the ground to get the resin to fall back down, and turn the water on 75% full stream.)

I put a clean catch pan under the outlet during back flush to catch any resin beads that might escape. Let the pan overflow, the beads will remain in the pan. You can put them back in the top if needed. A few escapees is ok and won't effect it.

Always a chance for a few beads to escape, but really nothing to be concern about with the volume of beads remaining.

You said "PH" and then tested "Hardness". Those are two different tests unless you have a dual test strip. Softener aren't really intended to change Acid/ Base(PH) readings, although they might tend to show a slight coincidental change due to sodium ion exchange. Sodium bicarbonate injector ( baking soda) can change PH, but that's another device and process that's done in municipal water treatment systems. I've built a Sodium Bicarb treatment plant for a major Northeast city.

Argh. You’re absolutely right. That was a complete slip of the tongue; no idea why I said that! I always try so hard to be accurate…but blew it this time!
