Water Warriors YEG is a grassroots organization that was started in 2020 in response to the city of Edmonton shutting off the few public water taps available as a COVID precaution. This left a growing unhoused population without water for drinking or sanitation.
Rebecca Reid and Claire Pearen answered the call, delivering life-saving water to those that needed it most, one bottle at a time.
Water Warriors YEG has now grown to a small army of volunteers taking to the streets. They distribute basic needs of survival: water, food, clothing, tarps, tents, and naloxone. Rebecca and Claire’s wagon patrols and bush-wacking CARE team also take in volunteers with medical training should they discover unresponsive people on their routes.
Direct action and harm reduction save lives. With no barriers to access, Water Warriors is filling the cracks where many unhoused people fall through. For WW YEG, Bureaucracy, religious affiliation, and sobriety are not obstacles for those receiving care. Empathy and humanity extend to everyone, and every dollar donated goes directly to the cause.
