When I was in Vietnam in 1967, near Bong Son and LZ Pony, I saw a vertical water wheel about 25 ft in diameter. The current of the river made it rotate. Bundles of hollow bamboo tubes on the periphery of the wheel, acting like buckets, picked up the water, lifted it about 12 feet to the bank of the river and dumped the water into an irrigation channel. The bamboo bundles had to be fixed with the exact correct tilt to not spill the water until they were over the irrigation channel. The whole thing was made of poles and bamboo lashed together and it was running smoothly, powered by the river flow, and with no supervision when we saw it. It was so amazing we risked our lives to stop and look at it. I wonder it's still there.

It does pump higher than the height of the wheel, depending on how many turns of the pipe there are. Each "gulp" of water, as it spirals to the centre, pushes the gulps ahead of it. The air in between is compressed. In effect, the unit collects energy from the stream ans stores it in such a way as to pump it with pressure, although not much.

Interesting concept and design, I read some of the comments and understand how it works now. So it could pump up, just it would not be a perfectly continuous flow. I wonder if adding a bunch more tubes so it had four inlets 90 degrees apart would make it better. I am assuming that it would, because it works on pressure created within the tubes and not just letting it flow through.

To make this better, the power wheel and feed wheel should be spinning opposite directions. Flip the feed wheel around and with a few belts and and a few gears you can reverse the direction of the feed wheel so you can collect even more water in the same amount of time because you'll be using the force of the water to inject even more into the hose. You can't spin this wheel slow in the same direction as the flow.

It would be just a rubber / silicone shaft seal. Same sort of seal on the end of an engine crank shaft that keeps the oil inside your car engine. For water applications they even make seals out of cotton rope soaked in bee's wax, many electric water pumps have wax seals in them and its very effective and water tight.

This is a very slick design. It works by lifting the water in the wheel higher than the discharge pipe which is also your rotor shaft. The amount of head or lift will be limited to just under highest point of the wheel. The larger diameter the wheel the more head (ability to pump uphill) you will achieve. For instance if your wheel is 3 feet above your shaft you will be able to pump uphill almost 3 feet. Remember if your discharge is at the same level as the top of your wheel it will not pump. Very impressive.
@davehadfield5906
9 жыл бұрын
No, I don't think so. This machine harnesses the energy of the flowing stream and adds it to moving the water by the number of coils. The number of coils is an energy storing device using compressed air. The rotation compresses the air which moves the water against a restriction, in this case gravity. The flow rate is determined by the speed of rotation versus the height of lift, x the resistance of the unit.
@LarryHohol
9 жыл бұрын
dave hadfield You are right that the wheel uses the energy of the flowing stream but not to compress air. Rather it is used to lift the water higher than it's own level in the discharge tube. The weight of the water that is higher than the discharge tube provides the force to push the water through the discharge pipe. Remember the head of this pump will be slightly less than the highest point of lift.
@elhigh
9 жыл бұрын
Sorry, but dave hadfield's answer is a bit closer to right than you know. As the wheel turns several small heads develop, one in each coil. All these heads' potentials "stack" to the point that, if there were more coils on this wheel, it could pump to several meters above the top of the wheel itself. I have seen a wheel approximately this size, pumping in similar conditions, achieve over 80' maximum head. To be fair that one had about thirty turns of pipe on it, and the pipe was smaller. But still: 80 feet. It's a bit counter intuitive until you see the diagrams that explain what's going on.
@LarryHohol
9 жыл бұрын
elhigh If the tube had a check valve or series of check valves I would be more apt to agree with you. Pressure is a funny thing like that. I would love to see a video showing 80 ft of head on lets say a 6 foot wheel. Make me a believer. Until I see it I will remain skeptical.
@elhigh
9 жыл бұрын
Larry Hohol Google it: "Spiral Pump" lurkertech.com/water/pump/tailer/ It's all over the web. The 80 feet was a singularly excellent result and a bit of an outlier, but 40+ feet of head is not remarkable with this design. It's typical. The heads (differences in height of water column) that develop on the two sides of the wheel - ascending side vs. descending side - "stack," and that's why it's able to deliver to such great heights. It's counterintuitive but it makes sense if you stop to examine the diagrams closely.
@SomeoneCommenting
10 жыл бұрын
Will work as long as the water flow has enough energy to move the paddles and the output pipe is not higher than the outer coil. This contraption can move water at any long distance (provided the output height condition). Without a stream to continue the process inland, you can pump the water far into a reservoir and then use wind energy to move a second coil. That way you can get the water to a higher level, and keep going on.
@xxxmikeyjock
Жыл бұрын
