1861-1865. Fort Delaware, the largest and most state-of-the-art military fortress of its kind, was also the centerpiece of a thriving and unique community. A blend of Civil War Confederate prisoners, Union soldiers, and civilians, it was for a brief time one of the largest cities in all of Delaware. An impregnable fortress turned into a virtually inescapable prison, it housed POWs captured at battles such as Gettysburg and Vicksburg, along with several now-famous political prisoners. The Story of Fort Delaware is more than a story of a military marvel, it is a story of the people who lived and died there, the effects of the Civil War on a border state, and the indefatigable spirit of American ingenuity.
