In this video, I will share my method of drawing and painting a sunflower. These are statement flowers if you are lucky enough to have them in your garden. You can play with the shapes of the petals and have them twist and turn. I incorporated all the warm colors of the color wheel with Cad Orange, Cad Yellow, Yellow ochre, a golden color, and even a little touch of Burnt sienna for the petals in the back.
This tutorial kit not available, Original sold out I have another Sunflower Tutorial kit debbiewalkerart.etsy.com/list...
I Create a color swatch for every painting to see what colors will look best together and appeal to me.
I also have this Sunflower Original left..debbiewalkerart.etsy.com/list...
As well I love playing with the center of the flower, blending Burnt Uber, Burnt Sienna, and for the edges to show depth and shadow, Prussian Blue, be careful with Prussian Blue it can easily take over your painting and is quite staining and hard to lift with a dry brush.
I have chosen to use mainly primary colors and allow the red and yellow to mix to create a beautiful hue of orange that I couldn’t buy in a tube.
This is primarily a wet-in-wet technique to blend sunflower colors, including golds, oranges, yellows, and a bit of burnt umber. This makes a beautiful sunflower color palette.
Splurging today and using a sheet
Of my Stonehenge, Cold Press, link amzn.to/3wkFfs2 , 140# with a lot of texture. And my winsor Newtons!
I am also helping the paint to blend by “pulling” the paint specifically in the petal I dab or dot in the red paint and then go back with a dryer brush with less water and help pull the paint into the yellow petal with the tip of my brush.
I thought making this little practice painting available for you in my Etsy shop might be fun!
