I have been in this business for years. A contractor pitch up with a taxi at a tender meeting might walk away with a contract. So much corruption going on and people has to pay the price of this incompetant government. And everyone think it is fine untill they loose love ones.

The other issue to take into account are the professional fees paid. When fees are cut/reduced, a company cannot resource a project properly, people may end up working long hours to meet deadlines, which increases the risk of errors being made. There just have to be mandatory minimum fees fir architects and engineers.

There has to be an enforced minimum wage, for all workers in the industry. Gross exploitation is common place, especially of foreign workers. It is not uncommon for workers not to receive wages for the last few weeks of a contract. The boss tells them that they are behind schedule, and the client is refusing to pay until the job is finished. They work eighteen hours a day, sleep on site, and beg borrow and steel food. Then when they complete the job, the boss announces there is no money to pay them.

a building does not collapse just like that.According to eyewitnesses there was a big sound then the collapse.Having built my own double story house I suspect that the sound could most probably be that if steel work collapsing at the crucial stress points of the struxture and my speculation is some people cut corners big time all the time.Sad but buildings just do not collapse like this.

Not funny at all. If we don't know WHY it happened, we don't know WHO is to blame. So why shame someone who is not to blame? The names of all the role players have been made public by the authorities anyway.

Dr. Watermeyer made very valid points. The most significant point is probably to have additional assessment of civil engineers done before they are allowed to undertake structural engineering. A Code of Practice specifically for structural engineers will provide a basis for such assessment. Other engineering disciplines (e.g. Geotechnical Engineering) having a potential impact on public health and safety should also be considered for additional assessment. A slew of regulatory bodies (the built environment regulatory councils, Council for the Built Environment, Department of Labour, Construction Industry Development board (cidb), National Home builders Registration Council, Building Inspectorates at local government, and others). Is there sufficient coordination between these bodies to prevent collapses of this nature? Mention was made of photos of a construction site, (taken for a different reason than assessing the construction) in Waterfall in 2008 that assisted largely in the investigation of the collapse. Should a similar process not be implemented when multi-story buildings are erected?

Yes, the industry has an obligation to enforce standards. But the municipality is the closest independent safety agency. Unfortunately, all too often, the only reason building inspectors come to site is to collect bribes. For those who think the DA is an honest alternative to the ANC: where were Georg's inspectors in the period leading up to the collapse? And remember this - the DA is owned by the same oligarchs who own the ANC.

I am very concerned that there is escalating disasters that cost lives. I am also of view that we know the structure has collapsed. As a disciple of quality where is the accountability from the quality practitioners. A lot of people seem to mix health and safety issues and quality issues. The quality practitioner is the face of risk management. I agree that we are jacking up our competency requirements. Perhaps there should be a representative from the Southern African Society for Quality.

Maybe it is time to introduce a specialist structures and construction B degree. The unnecessary barriers to becoming a structural engineer would be substantially reduced. Transport planning can be removed from civil engineering and placed in the quantitative social/behavioural sciences, where it belongs.

The mistake we all make is to think that a civil engineer is all about trenches and underground pipes...These engineers qualify under the same civil engineering descipline. Therefore, a civil engineer is just as qualified, if not more qualified to be an expert as they are broadly focused, while a structural engineer just focus on structure and loading of a building and frankly, many reply on computers to do calculations for them.
