You're a great storyteller, Scott. Thank you for sharing your experiences as a young artist, peeling back the curtain. Simply fascinating. I could listen all day.

Fun to hear these stories because I was at the NYAA around the same time. Different corner of the same small world. Never met Jacob, but studying with Steven Assael sounds somewhat similar.. Impressive to see paint but very... unusual personality. Also, Assael was in that Alli G show you mentioned and was apparently very upset about it! Great videos- keep it up!

Scott, you're the Spalding Gray of painters. So much teaching happens amidst and between your phrases. Thank you for having the audacity to tell it straight, and the casual eloquence to keep it interesting. Also, that's one elegant painting.

Great stories, I used to live in Bedford close to Pratt, on wilIoughby ave , I used to ride my bikes all around Brooklyn looking for thrift stores, I came across that house you mentioned it’s next to a thrift shop , it’s probably all different now this was back right before 9/11 , actually I went back in 2012 it mostly gentrified. Thanks for all your great lessons and stories.

Fabulous video. I love your style, your skills blow me away. Although this was informative and serious painting methodology, what i love the most your humor. Your storytelling is hysterical and i laughed so hard, impressive tips for sure. ive watched many professionals paint and some i could not watch without being glued to my chair because they were so boring. Your videos i could watch forever. I just purchased your entire collection!!!! I am so happy, i;m guessing in 10 years i'll be half as good as you, and thats ok. Stay amazing!

I dunno about other people, but this is the second video of yours like this that I've watched simply to hear the stories (in fact, I'm busy photographing some old negatives as this plays, so I'm not even looking at the screen). I remember seeing a painting by Anthony Ryder on the cover of some magazine, many years ago and buying it just for that photo. I've never met Jacob Collins, but your impersonation of him "paints" a strong mental picture. ...speaking of ...I too have the "theatrical" habit of imitating someone if I'm going to quote them. One day it dawned on me that being a portrait artist is a little like being an actor... we both portray people. I'm sure there's some thread between the two, of wanting to understand other people by 'creating them'.

Not all great artists are great teachers but Ted Jacobs and Tony Ryder are two of the best. I think if you had gone to the Ryder Studio instead of the Water Street Atelier you would have gotten an incredible amount of information along with weekly demonstrations. And it would have been far less expensive to live in Santa Fe, NM. Sounds like you learned by watching others and the opportunity of direct observation eight hours a day than by Jacob himself. It was very generous of Jacob to keep the instruction so affordable for young artists but he did not have to charge much because he did not have to worry about money; probably money related to art never crosses his mind. I think if you were honest with him that you could no longer afford to study full time, he would not have been upset with your leaving Water Street. Jacob did study with Ted Jacobs, not sure how long. Shortly after studying with Ted, he had a successful exhibition of his paintings. I can see an incredible amount of Ted's influence in Jacob's work. Not sure how he lays in a painting but the end result is similar in style. Or at least one of his paintings had that influence, particularly the way he shaped the light with the brushstrokes.

The house was called the "Broken Angel House." Brooklyn rumor, (probably myth) had it that Arthur and his gypsy wife were granted leave to purchase the lot from the city for $5 provided they build on it. Which they did. To no building codes whatsoever.

Thanks for the video Scott, enjoyed your story telling here and the relatable struggles of an artist early in his career. Waterstreet sounds like it was an absolute privilege to attend even coupled with all the tribulations. I laughed audibly whilst at the gym when you mentioned the Jordan Sokol teasing you with the 'What would JC do?' comment, and the way Mandy Moore inspired you to be an artist in a way.

What is the difference between the Florence and Central technique? From what I gather one method paints an object all at once and in layers, while the other works from one region of a piece onto the neighboring piece until completion. If you made a video about this I would be thrilled. Been stuck on painting a leaf with a brushstroke rather than drawing a leaf and detailing it. Thanks for sharing your work.

Social anxiety is FOR REAL man, I find it really messed up how put down we feel for feeling nervous about approaching somebody or someone, especially if we admire them. And it is seen as a weakness. Well, it´s probably just a sign of how serous you are about something that you can´t just take lightly any wrong that might come about, you don´t wanna fuck it all up for life because you sneezed and a booger ended up dangling from your face in front of someone you admire. But shit happens, and time passes on, we as humans have a very hard time communicating with strangers for good biological reasons, I guess. But why did they make the artistically inclined so prone to just that: awkwardness around people.¿ Such is life, I guess.

The first Grand Central Academy was started by Sargent and two other artist . Fechin taught there as well as Cornwell, Harvey Dunn and Frank Reilly. The school was located on the east wing of the terminal. Thanks Scott for Calling out Streamline for titles like secrets to..... for his content fooling people who are just starting out thinking it's a carefully selected few who get to learn the optical and conceptual way of thinking. I'll call Eric out on his inflated prices, for what he charges for downloads with 2-5hrs of content you can take a 8 week course at GCA.🤑

Scott . . . Your palette consists mainly of warm colors. What do you do when you run into a perceived blue or green peeking though the flesh you're painting??? Do you create a green from a little YO and IB or a perceived blue from IB? Just curious. Like your work.
