Anyone who's stood by the ocean can attest to the powerful waves in our planet's seas. Of course, there's great potential to capture this kinetic energy and transform it into electricity to power our grids. But how?
Many machine designs have emerged around the world since the 1970s; they've been tested and a few have been connected to local grids. But in the US, a new funding boost has been proposed to help test new energy converters and speed the process of their deployment. This is especially important for isolated island communities that would otherwise rely on pollution-heavy diesel generators for their power needs. Whether the funding package - and the aid it would provide to disadvantaged communities - becomes a reality depends on our choices this November.
