There’s some things plugins can do that hardware is incapable of. Hardware compressors and preamps have a slight edge over plugins but only ever so slight. You can’t save hardware settings with your sessions either. I’m not saying hardware is bad, it’s just plugins have advantages too and they’re loads cheaper and still sound good. Software of course can’t replace a real physical microphone preamp when amplifying actual microphones. And software models of microphones fall far short of the real deal. As far as Waves goes, there’s other fish in the sea.

Little none of their plugins are top of the line. I’ve been using them for a decade, they had some useful stuff, but it’s all been eclipsed by competitors. Whenever my existing Waves plugins stop working (with a system upgrade) there’s nothing I’m going to miss. The issue for a lot of producers will be old project recall, which is messed up. Great video. Yep...I too own quite a few Waves Plugins (WPI's), including their Ultimate Bundle, Abbey Road Bundle and quite a lot of individual purchases. Honestly, I will now hesitate to insert any currently owned / legacy WPIs into new projects knowing that, even though the new subscription scheme does not effecting my legacy plugins, I know that a couple of years down the road they may no longer work within my DAW or an operating system update. Sadly too, and as a long-time customer, I will no longer be purchasing any new plugins from Waves as I don't want to join the subscription program- and have to keep paying every year to keep my plugins-and therefore my projects, up-to-date. On the bright side of things, Waves is now helping me downsize my plugin in usage and forcing me concentrate on using fewer and better plugins. For that I'm truly grateful to them. :)

taking away the normal sales and upgrades was really unnecessary, they only needed to add the subscription and keep doing their normal sales. all this does is handcuff newer studios into having more mandatory monthly bills. you used to be able to skip more than a couple generations depending on what your system was and how stable the plugin is. some waves plugins just worked forever and never needed an update outside of hardware and OS compatibility. ive had waves since 2009 and i think ive bought 3 update plans and only when something broke from an os or daw update. now its a mandatory 300 a year whether you need it or not.

(TLDR-im bitchin about being traumatized by PT😂) Honestly, pro tools has been resting on they're laurels since like pro tools 10 imo and I've been using PT since the days before ilok and you needed the proprietary mbox or digidesign or whatever it used to be called with that sweet DSP that made it possible to even use the damn software on potato powered computers of years passed. I stopped using pro tools as my go to after 11 because 12 felt like a point upgrade for the cost of an integer upgrade. A bit more power and the abilty to remotely work on sessions with someone natively was like the big reason to upgrade to 12 but it was already possible, though not natively, with free third party software. Not to mention they dropped TDM support with 11 so you'll still find studios running PT 10 and still bouncing in real time, those poor bastards. Pro tools used to have the best time/elastic stretching around which was a godsend for tightening up a loose drum take but pretty much every other daw has caught up. Im not impressed by their AAX format which saves negligible processing power most of the time. The work flow i personally find super rigid and restrictive compared to every other DAW except maybe Reason because thats just virtual analog. And holy crap, i have multiple encyclopedia sized books on just the shortcut commands in PT. They just added custom shortcuts last year in 2022.4 i think when we've been asking for years for that ability or something similar. Pro Tools is so prevalent in the industry today because it used to be pretty much the only game in town during that transitional phase from analog to digital in the 90's and early 2000's, though avid will tell you it's because of how reliable it is, like it never crashes in the middle of a session😑. Now, its just so ingrained in the industry because its the OG of DAWs but PT is not needed. Don't get me wrong, its good software and the modern mid tier PT looks and feels like PT HD of yesterday, but it has become overly complicated simply from innovations they've made and being around for so long. And where are my clip list folders its 2023! I apologize for the long ass rant if you made it this far. I've just been traumatized by being forced to multitrack sessions in PT in apple environments, especially in college, when im a PC guy.

I have waves plugins, but I rarely get the upgrade plan because some plugins need to fit into my workflow. The waves concept of AI assist makes sense, but the cost for plugins that would not fit into my workflow needs to make better business sense to me. I have plugins that I rarely use that cost me money and only have a few buttons that change a sound or frequency, but the UI looks great. The free plugins out there have almost more valuable than the paid versions.

The most Waves did, was send me an email to tell me to update all my licenses and 2nd licenses, because they were not going to do 2nd licenses any more, but they didn't say why and they said nothing about the slap in the face that we all just received from Waves.

This, in my opinion is a kind of a corporate theft of the customer. I'm currently replacing their plugins, the ones I have, with other plugs. It's not always possible, but I decided a few years back, rather than updating, to just let them go defunct. I deliberately try not to use their plugins, and try to find workarounds. Besides, plugins are a kind of fetish, and the more you learn the more you realize that the less you use the better the sound. For new users, rather than buying into this new plan, I would advise against becoming involved with them at all, since they have demonstrated time and again that they can't be trusted and have a kind of contempt for their customers. I would boycott this company. On top of all this I draw the line at renting something as intangible as a damn plugin. When it comes to renting anything, accommodation, a roof over my head, is about my limit. It's time the customer spoke on this and told waves to stuff their plugins.

Check whether the video creator you are watching is an affiliate seller - is there a link in the subscription. Voice your concerns directly to Waves Audio : Gilad Keren, Nir Kozlovsky, Meir Shaashua, Yoad Nevo and others. Real people. Real decisions.

No big loss for me. I've been weening myself away from Waves plug ins due to the fact they can't keep up to date for my DAW and OS. So for now, I'll just "wave" bye bye to Waves!

For Windows users, this isn't a big deal. However, for Mac users, this could be problematic. To be honest, I use subscription base plans for my daw(presonus sphere) on some Adobe products. That way, it ensures that I am always up to date, and in many ways, it's cheaper than upgrading individual software of many of the products I use. I may get the essentials plan. Question: Do we get to choose what plugins we want in the essentials plan, or are they predetermined?

They are predetermined, if you go to the link in the description and you can see what's included. I'm also working on a follow-up video where I'm comparing. What's an essential and what's in ultimate

This video should just be called “RIP to Waves,” PERIOD, as far as I’m concerned 🤷🏼♂️ Not like they’re gonna go under, but subscriptions like this are a giant middle finger to beginners or other amateurs or, frankly, any struggling artist at any level of experience or skill. I’ve stood by Waves for years, but I, personally, can’t support this.

I have used waves for about 20 years, both live and in studio. I own just about everything they have. I'll be letting the plugins I own stop working and never look back. I recently switched to Nuendo from Protools for the same reason. Bye bye waves.
