100% agreed. 1) yes Waves does have some gems, but even many of these gems are being overtaken by the competition. 2) Waves became a scam operation when they introduced the WUP that offered literally nothing substantial... a new skin woop woop! What about upgrading the algorithms to improve the sound? What about introducing oversampling to their plugins? That would actually mean something. But nope, a ridiculous price to upgrade each plugin (ANNUALLY!) to offer new skins and allow them to be used on newer operating systems. 3) And then Waves subscription-gate?!! Even though they panicked and backpedaled I have rarely been so disgusted by corporate behaviour as I have with this move . Hi Barry, I agree. The first plugins I ever bought was from Waves - vocal rider, bass rider, etc. Then later on bought their gold package, and after a year upgraded to Platinum. But as I am just a hobbyist, it will be untenable for me to have them on subscription. I buy plugins based on the funds I have, and I do not want to worry later on if I can afford to sustain payments for subscriptions. Much as I love my F6, MV2, Renaissance, vocal and bass riders, I am saying goodbye to my Waves plugins and will slowly shift to others like MeldaProductions, TDR, Softube, etc.

Since then, , I own and love NI Komplete Ultimate, UAD, Softube, Slate, iZotope, Soundtoys, PluginAlliance, Kush and Arturia and more, and honestly, HONESTLY, I would have given Waves away altogether save for their Abbey Road series. And to be brutally honest, that's more out of me being a complete Beatles fanatic and having a sentimental connection to the idea of Abbey Road... Without wishing to run Waves down, they're essentially based around distortion, compression and ....well, that's about it. Many variations of the same effects in different skins. Personally, I don't mind a subscription model, Slate being a good example of that model done well. But I have been pretty unimpressed with Waves' update system, hardly bothering with it if the truth be told. Anyhow, my rant is over. Cheers.

This "discard" carried out by Waves on the customer relationship is, in my opinion, very reminiscent of classic behavior patterns that usually occur within a narcissistic toxic relationship. Currently, we are back in the "love bombing" phase after "the next" did not work. Before the "discard", "the next" was secretly built up in the background with the goal of disposing of the old relationship. In this discarding phase, the hatred and disrespect for the old customer relationship must have already been very strong, which in turn explains the overall behavior of the company in the last few days.

I'm going to err on the side of mercy here. Well done to Waves Audio for recognizing their mistake, acknowledging their customers, and making the change to correct it. No, they are not human. They are a company. It consists of many humans, but it is not human. Companies don't even have the same laws applied to them. And those many humans in a company, create chains of responsibility, to prevent mistakes of one, or even of several, to go through. Ideas are being researched, weighted if it's worth being implemented and what problems it may cause. And this "subscription-only" disaster went through the whole chain of responsibility, and got signed to execution by their top executive officer. Now, what Waves did to fix this responsibility failure of theirs? I haven't heard of any big name resignations there. The chain of people, responsible for this failure, is still there, still being responsible for things. How the company can be trusted not to screw their customers again, if people who were responsible for it are still there, still being responsible? And amends... What amends? I haven't seen any amends. None of my older plugins were WUPed to current versions. They didn't give me any 5 free plugins to choose from. All they did is promised (not even done yet) to get it back to how it was before. They can take money from the salary of their executive officer to cover it. He obviously didn't do the job for which he is payed big money. It's like a burglar being caught with his hand in my pocket, takes his hand out and says: "Ok, I wouldn't take anything from you. No hard feelings, ok?" Yeah, sure - you can keep standing behind me any time (NOT!)

agree 100%, Avid did the same. Been at this (on quite the casual level) since the Digi001 in the late 90s. For Waves, as someone who saved up for decades and paid along the way with minor annual upgrades during the holidays to get to the Mercury collection, I can't believe that they think all the money we've spent over the years is worthless now. And for the Waves Update Plan, I was able to chose if I wanted it (most years not really). Some months I make music, others I just do my day job and come back, but I won't be turning on and off subscriptions.

I agree, and I must say Waves (like Avid/Digidesign) has annoyed the hell out of me for decades. Like you, I've used Waves back to the 90s, and Digi/Avid back to Sound Designer and Sound Tools (2 track playlist). On the other hand, the $249 annual for Waves is actually quite a bit less than I had been paying for the (damned) WUP. And now I would be able to get any other plugs I want to try. So not sure which way to go. I'm just now severing ties with PT this year. We'll see about Waves. Thanks for all your informative videos.

I completely agree with you. I think many companies are on the way to do the same procedure.

Well, I got an email with their apologies that the perpetual license is back. This had no effect on me. All of their emulations that I use are already in my SSL Native VST(Duende back then). There are no issues and sound better than all of these emulations out there. I hardly use my Waves plugins... I now just use C4 or C6, NS1, and Maserati Grp. 80% of my plugins use, are DAW native...

I used to be a Avid/ProTools (including the 11 rack that I LOVE) user yrs ago (since the mid 90's), frustrated with all the iLok issues I ran into over & over again & the unsupported Waves plugin's e.g. from versions 7 to 8 to 9 then to 10.. all the $ invested into something that expired -OR- if it didn't expire it had compat issues that = "unusable". I was introduced to Ableton 4 yrs ago and WOW, amazing and have never looked back, not even once. Sadly BIG money wants MORE BIG money! Its everywhere on this mud ball cruzing through space... or is it? ... hummmm Thanks Barry for voicing this! Cheers!

Somebody at Waves need to be fired! You are right Greed motivated the fool(s). Now, will I buy another Waves plug-in after this? Hell No! I am pissed and will be pissed off for a long time. I dumped Adobe for the same reason. Thanks for using your forum to echo the message.

You are spot on Barry, and you couldn't miss because all you did was tell the truth. And you did make a difference, we all did, because as you said aswell, together, numbers + resistance = power. We stood up to a bully and we won. As long as we only ever resist when forced to, then the power never loses credibility. (some people protest at the drop of a hat). In the meantime, we've always been good paying customers.
