That Hat is great, but for the love of god, DO NOT use it with an IoT SIM. I tried to use it with the Hologram IoT SIM shown in the video and i spent the last 4 days pulling my hair out trying to get a stable internet connection! Inserted a normal SIM (for smartphones) instead, and it worked no problem. You only have to set the Pin (if the card has one) in the modem settings (AT+CPIN)

For me the USB port ttyS0 didnt work. `dmesg` I found out there are many like ttyUSB1, ttyUSB2,ttyUSB3, ttyUSB4. I used ttyUSB2 and it worked. I made my first phone call, which worked perfectly. Thanks again bro. For GPS it was ttyUSB3. It may be different for you. I am getting GPS data completely in a different format. Thats why I am getting lots of error like File "/home/pi/SIM7600X-4G-HAT-Demo/Raspberry/python/GPS/GPS-SMS-Human-Readable.py", line 53, in send_at FinalLat = float(Lat) + (float(SmallLat)/60) ValueError: could not convert string to float: ' +' i will try to modify that script to get a human readable format. One issue. I'm using this with only 4G and of course since there is no real time clock on the pi it has no idea what time it is when not connected to a network. And of course that matters for running cron scripts to send GPS coordinates. I guess what I need is internet access but my SIM has almost no data. Need to set time over 4G or GPS and then kill the internet once time is set.
@Core-Electronics

Looks like another fellow has run into this issue too. He created a script that fixes the system time based on the GPS location of the device. I reckon that is right up your alley with your current hardware - wb4son.com/wpblog/?p=1635 You also have the option to include a RTC to your system. Something like this would be a plug in solution to getting accurate timing - core-electronics.com.au/catalog/product/view/sku/DFR0386

@@Core-Electronics Thanks. Looks like on my install the GPS outputs NMEA data on ttyUSB1. Installing gpsd and then grabbing the output causes the SMS GPS script to fail. I guess there is a serial port issue there. I have a couple of options. My only goal is to track my camper if stolen. I can attach a second USB GPS (I have many of them) and then run that script. There is bound to be a way to do it with one GPS but I can't figure it out. Also I keep the power off in the camper via a battery switch. Ideally I want to boot the Pi when the thief powers up the camper for the first time but it seems like by then the Pi won't know the date much less the time. Real Time Clock sounds great but really no less trouble hanging another GPS off the Pi on another serial port.

@@Core-Electronics It doesn't surprise me that it exists. As the people around here like to say, there are passengers for every train. As for "getting into the weeds", focusing on the cheaper stuff (for example I'm looking at a SIM800L GSM GPRS module for 6 euro in a local site) is better idea IMO since, even if its more soft and hardware limited than the featured one here, its affordable for more people. I know that it won't make a very interesting video for the "tech enthusiasts" but how many ppl that watched this would spend 80 vs 6 euro to try it for themself? That is the main problem in the "hobby electronic" market also - making a small run product, focused for the few instead of the many, and keeping the price up since selling little means u gotta cover expenses and make profit fast - the fact that the chip on this hat retails for 38eu means the whole thing cant cost more than 40,45 when mass manufactured. At least the documentation/software support here seems solid enough compared to most modern SBCs even.

You can't use your current phones SIM if you are on Verizon Wireless, because they link your phone IMEI to the SIM card, and the 7600 has its own IMEI, so Verizon will block it. In the USA at least. Mint Mobile runs on T-Mobile's infrastructure. In theory it definitely could, here is a cool community project using a similar Waveshare 4G hat! github.com/evanman83/OURS-project

Using Bookwork version of Raspberry OS I have an issue with the etc/rc.local script: echo "4" > /sys/class/gpio/export echo: write error: Invalid argument The same happens with the other GPIOs. Other than that, the hat is working, when I enable it from python code using GPS.py script, then it connects fine to the internet. I have some issue with the GPS serial. It answers a couple of times, then blocks the serial, rebooting seems to make the GPS work for a while also. I'm using Raspberry pi 4. Any thoughts?

I figured that out, in Bookworm, D6 (pin to turn on the board) corresponds to Gpio 518, so the correct commands are echo "518" > /sys/class/gpio/export I now ran into a different issue. I have the hat connected, and also the microUSB to the USB port (the one right next to the Main antenna connector). When I turn on the hat, I get a new usb0 connection (which connects to the internet without any issues, at least the ping command is working, haven't tested it more thoroughly), but the GPS is not working (or at least not consistent) via the /dev/ttyS0. Sometimes the AT+CGPS=1,1 command returns ERROR, then the serial stops responding, and in some cases it answers with the correct position. Either way, I tried disconnecting the microUSB, now the GPS /dev/ttyS0 is answering all the time. I believe there's some kind of conflict between the USB and the Serial connection (via the hat). This was working ok in a previous raspberry os version. Any thoughts? Have you tried the same hat on the last raspberry OS?

Hiya :) Thank you for the tutorial, so helpful! Could you please a video on how to use the SIM7600E LTE Cat-1 HAT with a Raspberry Pi 4 model b as a router - or how to communicate and send data with a SIM card? Thank you in advance!

I have a relay board that my pi is plugged into and my pi gets it's power from the relay board. Is it possible to use this with a pi and relay board. The relay board does have a 40 pin connector that looks like what is on the pi.

4:36 no heatsink? I always thought it was best to install one?

Depends on the application. If your doing computationally intense computing (like AI) or if you are running your Raspberry Pi in a hot environment, then Heatsink all the way. If your just doing simple desktop tasks or running small Python scripts then no Heatsink is perfectly okay for these sweet single board computers.

I keep getting a notification that my GPS module isn't ready and it logs off could you know how to fix it?

I can take some time (5 mins +) for the GPS to initially figure out where it is in this wide world. For the first time connecting make sure the GPS has a clear view of the sky and theres no clouds. Once it figures it out where it is the first time it will be much faster and more robust the future time and getting the GPS location can be achieved in doors or on cloudy days.

Great video, thanks! I have been using the module for a month and 2 days ago the NET LED started flashing. I checked what this means and found out that the module is looking for a network even though it is already connected. What is the reason for this? And how do I solve the problem?

@@Core-Electronics I followed the documentation and I also added the execution of A7600E to rc.local, but still it is the case that the Raspberry is not always connected to the internet after a new boot. What exactly am I doing wrong and what steps should I follow to connect the Raspberry to the network after booting?

You may be able to get better connectivity using the Raspberry Pi Lite OS version. You could also write a Python script to force the system to connect to the internet by pinging it multiple times.

HI Tim, I am currently running this 4G HAT with a Raspberry Pi in exactly the same hardware configuration that you are using (Same jumper configs and USB connections). However, I am experiencing power issues when I plug in this module for longer than 30minutes? The Pi starts to overheat and hang... Any suggestions?

Very interesting, I haven't had overheating issues with my set up over here when I ran it overnight but my office is pretty cold. Have you installed heat-sinks to the Integrated Circuits on the Raspberry Pi?

Hi Your video is quite informative. I have question related to GPS as GPS is sending Time also. I am using the same method to read time from GPS. But the time i can read from GPS is UTC 0, I have change my CLK time zone to +32 after doing that network time is ok but GPS is still send with UTC 0.

Hi, is there any reason we are not using GPIO serial port and using USB serial instead?

USB serial is how this HAT chooses/was designed to communicate. GPIO communication would run into limitations if used with this gear (but TTL UART GPIO connection does exist and is worth being aware of).

Such an excellent question and I haven't got an exact answer because it seems to me nobody has tried to use it with that Operating System. It looks like a challenging route to take but I do think it is possible.

when the Waveshare hat is using a sim card, would it use moble data (as is it was a phone) or hotspot data, becuse some phone providers offer unlimted 4g data for 30 bux a month, but no hotspot data

Can I make a standalone portable 4G router for wifi hotspot out of it, without using the main Pi board? Will it be more efficient than those portable 4g routers?
