Been having trouble with wavy boards. Have double checked level, tension, etc. Everyone is saying that the problem is dull blades but I have a brand new blade on the mill. I'll give this a try as I'm about out of ideas. Your explanation seems reasonable. Thanks for posting this

Excellent information. My mill isn't a Norwood, but the principles apply.

Just found your channel. Excellent discussion and well presented! Thank you for helping get the word out. The ceramic guides on the HD36 seem to work as well as the roller guides, as long as the blade is properly adjusted. You make a good point about checking the tracking after every blade change. A new blade is pretty forgiving but, once the edge on the tooth dulls just a bit, the tension and tracking become more critical. Looking forward to more of your videos!

Great instructions, nice to know. So far wavy cuts have not been a problem. If they start I will know where to focus my attention.

These are complex machines of different designs and adjustments. A circular saw cutting off line will do so because the part where the teeth are is stretched and can duck and dive away from the cut. Same can apply for belts, so the circular saw has to be hammered towards the centre to stretch it until the outside is flat when up to speed. If the Band has adjustments for stretch, OK, but a machine that has flat rubber drums needs to fit a blade that has tension at the front where the teeth are. It pulls itself straight in the cut until something like knots stretch it again. Australian hardwood does this all the time and there's a gadget you make to squeeze the back of the band between a pair of self-centred bearings. This can be done with the blade on the saw, so the best advice is to waste a lot of water washing and lubricating it in the cut when in operation. The sawdust is not good for breathing so lots of reasons for excess washing. Every machine and operator has their own foibles, and a bit of an Apprenticeship with your own is a very good idea.

Where did you adjust at?

This information mainly applies to band mills that do not use roller guides. Yes, each blade guide has to be adjusted so the blade runs parallel to the log bunks which also has to be parallel with the carriage tracks.

Actually it does also apply to roller guides as well. We're not talking about side to side level, were talking about back and forth level. Roller guides do help with this, but you still get a tip in the blade if it's not tracked level. Although it's not as prominent as a friction guide mill, it's there.

What did you ADJUST to achieve a level blade? Could not see what you did in the video, plus I don't have a sawmill yet and not familiar with the adjustments.

Do you adjust both the drive and idler wheels? You said you move the blade forward to make the front of the blade come up. That sounds opposite of what intuition tells me. Thanks

Just the idler side, like you normally would for tracking a new blade

The blade tracking. Track the blade either in or out just a little changes the blade level.

@@fullingtonlumbercompany3656 I’m new to bandsaw mills. By tracking do you mean you pushed the blade in on the belt more? I have a Came from a Lucas swing blade. Now I have a WoodMizer and got wavy cuts twice

@@stevenr8353 you adjust your blade tracking, either forward or backward until the blade is running level with the mill. I usually turn the band wheels at least 3 full revolutions after each adjustment and recheck until the blade is level

Crap blades can cause it, but if your blade is not running level with the track you can change blades all day and never get a straight cut. If the blade and track aren't level, the blade will enter the log at an angle and eventually the increased tensions will pull the blade back down and as the tension decreases the blade starts tracking back up.

@@wurlabyscott sometimes a new blade perfect not level until the one side either top or bottom gets dull. If the blade is not going into the wood perfectly straight, it won't be long and it will be running wavy again. But you're right, a bad blade even level will run wavy
