Waxing crescent moon over central Texas, Saturday evening, September 7, 2024.
Ended up with some unsharp clips again but most are pretty good. Manual focus seemed to work the best for getting sharper images. Still lots of atmospheric distortion due to the moon being low in the evening sky. Finished filming a little after 9:00 P.M. which was about an hour before the moon set. I've been able to lock in exposure pretty well but now I'm noticing the white balance drifting. Some clips start out looking almost like black and white and then as the moon moves to the edge of the screen it starts turning orange. I'll need to figure out how to lock in the white balance.
Filmed with the Nikon Coolpix P1000 on AUTO mode with focus on AUTO some of the time but mostly on MANUAL. Used maximum optical zoom at 125X which is equivalent to 3,000 mm focal length. 2X digital zoom doubles optical zoom to 6,000 mm equivalent focal length and 4X maximum digital zoom quadruples optical zoom to 12,000 mm equivalent focal length.
Edited with iMovie. Stabilizing clips that are already pretty stable makes the crescent moon appear to wag its tail some. I actually deactivated the stabilization on some clips to get rid of this annoying effect.
Hoping for sharper images and clips tomorrow night. The moon will be higher in the sky by the time it gets dark so there should be less atmospheric distortion.
