What a fantastic site! Clearly filmed and helpfully explained without too much jargon. Keep it up, Les! Gonna dig that old German diatonic out the loft and give it a go at hot rod ding it.

You are welcome! I usually keep the thermostate at around 90, to allow easy flow and minimal smoke. I've never checked whether this is the actual temperature of the wax.

Muy instructivo este corto documental, acá en Panamá se trabaja de igual forma, sobre todo cuando transportamos los tonos o se reparan las notas cuando se rompen. o desafinan.

In order to avoid unpleasant mishaps, I try and have as little wax as possible on the outer side of the spoon . After filling up I wipe it on the rim of the wax heater or an old newspaper. When the gaps are narrow (such as in chromatic reed blocks) I use a different (and faster) method which will, eventually, be demonstrated in another clip.

Thanks for the video, gives me a good idea on how to get the job done. All I have to do now is... find a way to make the tool! Any ideas? Is there anywhere on the web where I can get an actual picture of the tool that I can show somebody or which would help me on making it myself? thanks a lot!

It is originally designed for cosmetic purposes (epilation), There are many different brands. Just make sure that there is a thermostate.

I'm afraid you will either have to make it yourself or have someone (brass instrument repairers are usually good at this kind of work) make it for you.

Great! I have two questions though: - What about waxing reeds that are closely spaces? Sometimes there is as much as 1 mm between reed plates. - Are the reed blocks lightly pre-waxed? I see you not simply lay them on the block but press them in a little.

There are usually some residues of old wax that help to keep the reeds in place. As to closely spaced reeds: this method also works nicely with a 1 mm gap. I sometimes widen the gap to maybe 1.5 mm, let the wax flow and then push the reed closer to its neighbour while the wax is still hot. When there is very little space I wax the left edge of the reed already in place and place the new reed while the wax is still warm.

That's odd, because I've seen the same tool in several videos... I'd be surprised if someone in the last 200 years hasn't thought of mass-producing them..
