Wayne Newton was always gracious to us. We met him several times, bringing each time a stuffed animal for a child who was ill in the hospital and he took photos and signed photos and playbills, and then surprised everyone when he telephoned to see how the child was doing. He has done extraordinarily well, but I want to thank him. Thank you Wayne, for being you!

benthead I remember the story he told at one of the matinees a few years back, after he had come through a most difficult time after he and his money were very mismanaged by a financial manager and he telephoned "The Donald" Trump. Trump told him to go to his bankers and those who held the mortgages and speak them man to man. Tell them what he had just experienced and ask them to work with him. The bankers and mortgagers all worked with him and that helped him to get back on top. When Bob Hope knew he would not be able to keep up the USO tours, he recommended and personally got Wayne to take his place and Wayne has been doing that ever since.

I had a strange and funny experience, hearing this song on the radio for the first time, and it was the first time I had heard of Wayne Newton. While I was listening to the song I thought I was listening to a song by a female singer. hemp71 Yes, I remember very well. His performances stayed great throughout but I liked his look when he was in his 30s or so as himself, not that dyed black hair, the Cherokee stuff as intro, and certainly not the Gable mustache. It didn't affect his perfomances, but I couldn't understand why he reinvented his looks just as the women had begun going ga-ga over him. Then, in senior years, the face lifts. Good gawd.

As for statements like Michael Jackson rippin off dance moves, many artists are inspired but others because they can not only Feel their mojo, but also add their own flair and unique input - it's a form of flattery and respect to the originator unless a total mimic. 1968, wow nearly 50 years of success and hasn't flatlined, nothing but respect - I'm not a fan but certainly not a foe to his roll

@@Polyfusiaso let's try socialism, wait a minute, that doesn't work either. Maybe, you Einstein, can come up with a better idea! (it's so easy to be critical isn't it? Maybe you and senile Joe Biden, or alcoholic Nancy Pelosi can come up with a better idea!----> and you better wear your mask because of that 'deadly' virus, even when you're having sex ok?

@@lenspaulding Wait a minute. Social democracies like Finland and Denmark and Sweden are the happiest places in the world with the best quality of life. Trump supporters just think everything with the word "social" in it denotes a dystopian communist hell where god hating liberals warm their fingers over the fire of burning churches while Xi Jinping comes around personally taking everyones guns.

@@Polyfusia The flaw in your argument (and it's big!) is that both Finland and Sweden are 'sane societies'. its citizens aren't walking around with handguns, and there really isn't any gang problems there. And 'liberals' haven't been able to come up with any solution as well, is the bottom line.-> This is a country of 'mind control' thanks to 'mindless idiots' who believe everything they see on the media, computer and television. It is endless pro-liberal psychotic distortions fed to us everyday. And as far as Trump, he is just an ant on a sidewalk that you can easily crush. I believe he was sincere about draining the swamp, (Washington D.C must be corrupt beyond imagination), but even his own party is against him. Both Democrats and Republicans want him, and they'll take charge of the media, and did, out of Office. They're both, Republicans and Democrats are in this together and it is much scarier than you can imagine.

I remember watching him on Ed Sullivan back in the 60s. I was a child being babysat at my grandmother’s. I was confused as to why he looked like a man but sounded like a woman. He sure carved out a very successful life long career for himself.

+Pete Owen ; English lyrics are by Milt Gabler who named the song Danke Shoen and used that hook. He employed the Yiddish pronunciation (which he is most familiar with) hence Danke 'Shane' and the opportunity to rhyme with many English words; Danke Schoen in German has no English rhyme. The original tune had no lyrics was titled 'Candlelight Cafe' and released on record by Bert Kaempfert.
