The clay sculpture industry in Krishna Nagar, West Bengal, boasts a legacy of over 300 years. Renowned for its skilled artisans, many have garnered national awards for their craftsmanship. Their creations, ranging from intricate idols to lifelike figurines, are in high demand, not only in various Indian states like Lucknow and Delhi but also overseas in countries like the USA, Germany, and London. With a rich tradition of excellence, this industry continues to thrive, blending tradition with global appeal. Speaking to ANI, a sculpture artist said, “This art is a minimum of 500 years old. The legacy has been going on since my grandfather’s time. I learned it from him. I got a national award in 1991 for my work. There is no bright future for this work. There is no institution to learn this work. The government hasn’t built any school or college for this. Museums must be built for all the artworks.”
