A really interesting piece of kit - thanks for sharing. I experienced the same sluggish response from my VM's with unRAID and couple that with the loads of problems I had with GPU passthrough I've given up on it. I now run Hyper-V and find my VM's fly in comparison. Hardware is AMD Ryzen 7 2700X in an AsrockRack X470D4U.

Hi there! I had a similar problem and it turned out to be too few PCI Express Lanes. The processor you have (E5-2450L v2) only has 24 Lanes. Math-z :16x(GPU) + 8x (AN1500) + 8x(Raid Controller) = 32 Lanes required 32 Lanes(required) > 24 Lanes (have). There is going to be problems with the controller and added latency because the motherboard will constantly try to adjust the PCI-e version and pci-e lane assignment. Best of luck

Great vids! - I used to run a Windows 10 VM with Blue Iris in unRaid and found the VNC interface very slow and laggy. Have you tried using the Windows Remote Desktop instead of VNC? I found MS RDP 100% better than VNC, very snappy and performed well. 😊

I'd swap those CPU's out for something that has better single core performance. However, I don't feel like Unraid excels at virtualization. I gave up a long time ago trying to make it an all in one solution. I actually gave up on Unraid all together 2 months ago and swapped to a Synology DS1515+ and setup a headless Ubuntu 20.04 LTS VM on my m920q with the IGPU passed through for Plex. Plex performance is better, Synology just works and doesn't require me to fiddle with things. Happy New Years Eve! I like the Shiny WD AN1500.

the same problem with winserver 2016/2016 and HyperV, I think the cpu-s run in low power mode somehow. It is probably some settings from ILO. I have 2 two servers same config with 128GB memory, the same problem on them. my CPUs is E5 2620 v2. My idea has to get an AN1500 for working space for my VMs... but I dont know if is a good idea.

What I did was, I put all my VMs out of cache and formatted my Nvme as an unassigned device in xfs. For me also xfs was much faster then btrfs, but losding the VM from Btrfs to xfs an UD did the trick.
@b00bytrap

Hey F. Wechsel, thanks for the suggestion. I didn't mention it in the video but I tried BTRFS and XFS. Turns out, most of the sluggishness was caused by the clock speed of the 2450L CPUs.
@VictorvanDijkNL

In my personal experience, faster clockspeed trumps more cores to get a snappy user experience. I don't think the background processes benefit from more cores, although they will run in parallel, they take more time each, to complete their task. It might even introduce race conditions and cache misses. In some situations, disabling hyperthreading on the hardware can result in better performance.

Hey Victor van Dijk, thanks for the tip. Last night I did order 2x E5-2470 V2. That should hopefully do the trick. In the meantime I will test some more and maybe disable HT on the CPUs for testing.

I don't see you installing the SSD chipset drivers on your VM. UnRaid is not setup to recognize SSDs any different than a HDD. So within the unraid environment it will use a generic chipset driver for communication and many SSDs are not fully compatible with the default drivers. So VM startup and data speeds suffer greatly. I ran into this same issue on my AMD 3950x unraid server, was getting poor speeds and someone pointed it out to me. You have to pass through the SSD chipset manually and then install the driver chipset drivers or it defaults to the default drivers. If you try to pass through the SSD chipset and it won't let the VM boot then its not compatible with unraid for that specific drive and controller setup. I have 5 different SSDs and only 1 of 5 I was able to get passthrough to work and fully use the real drive bandwidth. You can get the drive drivers from the manufacturer website to install in windows or Linux once you get it pass-through

@@b00bytrap Ya i had to install the driver from Samsung along with doing the commands for chipset passthrough for it to stretch its legs and give me the performance i was expecting. www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/ssd/download/tools/ I also had HP EX920 and i couldn't get the NVME controller to work properly, so it is stuck running on default drivers which is greatly reduced in speeds. This is the video that ultimately helped me with my Samsung NVME drive.... kzitem.info/news/bejne/s6iNtXmPpZaFl6A Im now getting 3500 read and 3300 write speeds on my samsung drive in VM.

Good video Friend! I notice you are running Unraid 6.9.0 rc2 so you can run multiple pools so try keeping all the normal stuff on the cache SSD like Appdata, system, ect ok then add the WD AN1500 to it's own pool like name it "vms" then format it to xfs then make a new vm templet and make sure to set the settings that says Machine: Q35-5.1 and the BIOS: OVMF then reinstall windows 10 hopefully it will run faster ......or you could maybe just use the unassigned device plugin and black list the WD AN1500 so you could pass it directly through to the vm then just install windows 10 directly to the WD AN1500 but make sure the vm templet is set to Machine: Q35-5.1 Hopefully this will help you out :)😎JP

Hey I Enjoy Creating Videos. Sharp :) I upgraded unRAID just to see if it would make any difference in the performance. The SSD pools is actually a great suggestion. It would have saved me quite some time instead of just copying everything over to the AN1500 at first :P Ah well, I wasn't expecting the performance to be like this :) But I will follow your advice and let you know how it went.

SSD wont make a CPU limited task go any quicker (you even said it taken 30 minuets to install windows 10 that should not take more then 5-10 minuets on a HDD) the cache SSD is for caching so it will be on your pool because if the cache fails you lose data if it didn't, but i did notice later on you actually copied a VM to the cache directly, it should be there for automatic caching slowness of windows 10 likely between that your running windows 10 in a bowser box and the gpu driver is software on the server end,, or no Hyper-V (VT) just running the VM in Pure software mode,, hardware

I think your CPU clock speed is too low. I noticed it said 1.8ghz I ran a v2 Xeon with a clock speed of 2.1ghz and found my vms to be slow, now I have one that runs 3.4 and can boost to 3.8 and it is noticeably quicker. I don’t think cores matter much and even less so disk speeds if your CPU is slow.

Hey TheSanzca, thank you for sharing your experience. I think you're right. Both my TR2920X and the 2700X have much higher base clocks. The other hosts I was referring to in the video have older E5640 up to X5690 CPUs (all dual CPU configurations). Although these are older architectures, the base clocks are much higher. It doesn't explain why ESXi 7.0 was handling the VMs better than unRAID does. Anyway, last night I bought 2 E5-2470 V2 CPUs, and hopefully, it will do the trick for this server.
