Work in the fishroom never ends! Low boy idea: build an island in the middle that comes out of the water. Add several types of rock dwelling Tanganyikans, with a different type of shell dwellers around the perimeter.

I love the idea of surrounding the 50 gallon low boy with the couch. You just gave me a GREAT idea for how to optimize the viewing/lounging space in my living room (aka the fish room). If I had that tank, I would fill it with shell dwellers and maybe some cliff dwellers too. I look forward to seeing your build. I'm entertaining the idea of building things for myself instead of buying prebuilt items. I bought two geophagus balzanii on impulse which was stupid. The people who work at my local fish store are usually very helpful and will tell me NOT A GOOD IDEA when I get impulsive. Not this time! (They looked so cute sifting/spitting sand.) (Note to self: Don't ask this particular associate in depth questions.) Have you ever kept them? Thankfully mine are juveniles and will do okay in the 29 gallon right now. I will have to upgrade in a few months. (Fingers crossed for more sales closer to Christmas or after Christmas.) I've been researching so I can care for them properly. If you have time, I'd love suggestions/ideas on how to give them a good life.

Those are great fish! It's one of the few geophagus I haven't kept, but you are right - they are going to get big. It's a great excuse to get a larger tank in the future. If they're anything like the other geos they'll take a while to grow out. Would love to hear updates on them. : -)

Looking forward to following this project. I would suggest Apistogramma's for the low boy. With the new 125 stand it would be nice to have both tanks with Geo's, kind of like a Geo corner but I understand the logistics problems of moving and temporary housing of large fish.

My first thoughts on the additional 50g lowboy is to do something a little different like add enough sand and rocks to build up one side so it's out of the water. You can add some hermit crabs and plant some aquatic plants that may resemble palm trees so you have a beach scene. The water side can house a few breeds of nano fish. The beach could just be one corner so it doesn’t take up much room, just enough for the crabs to come out of the water for a while.
