That is true though. Lots of animation studios are sweatshops. Especially with movie projects. The other thing to watch is AI. It’s going to wipe out a lot of low level animation work. Since you are a student, if you can, I would try to learn as much about AI as you can. Watch the trends, learn how to use it. Becoming a low level animator at this stage is a bit doomed. But there will be new opportunities opening up so keep your eyes open and get the appropriate training.

@@amiesparkle00As someone who has worked with machine learning before and works with AI now I honestly think people are overestimating AI capabilities. Last couple of years were indeed really good, maybe even revolutionary but we are still a LONG way from being able to completely replace human animators with AI, if you are studying now you can be confident that there’ll still be a demand for your job in 10 or even 20 years. AI will be used by small independent businesses or fan groups but not huge corporations and when in a couple years they’ll start to use it it’ll be just a tool, not a full blown replacement

I think it's kind of autistic to take this comment as meaning that money grubbing corporate practices are non existent. I'm pretty sure they are mostly prevalent in the US, where a couple of corporations own everything. Like Disney for example. The reason why you fucks seem to think that "modern" movies suck is because Disney owns like 99 percent of the shit that comes out. So when they release films, they're gonna contain the exact same formula of writing of other big franchises, and market it towards american audiences. That's why it seems like movies today suck, the little mermaid film and marvel can sum up every shitty thing that comes out in the media. And also because we don't pay our employees jack shit. It's not as heavily monopolized in other countries.

Tbh If these corpos want money, they can get a lot of it by remastering older titles. But they insist on making garbage, because there's not enough room for creativity when the industry is owned by a small number of huge corporations. That's why I think that old games are masterpieces, because corpos didn't dominate the industry yet, they were small development teams making their own shit. Now they realized they didn't have to work hard to make money. The only way to make them change is by not buying their garbage. Animation right now is a bit like a mini renaissance, a movement of stories being told in different ways. With animation evolving and polishing throughout the board, it's reaching a point where people are starting to be more dynamic from one another and familiar with their own style. And I gotta say I'm really happy about that. We no longer see as much of the exact same style as a few years ago, but we now start to see people and even studios form their own comfort zone. Every work is presented differently, but they still manage to capture the audience's attention and tell a story. It's like getting a first glimpse of a book that sticks out with its cover, its title, or even its subject.

I haven’t watched live actions shows in a long time. Since getting into anime and animated movies like Spiderverse and Puss in Boots, I haven’t even looked at live action. Animation can capture dreams, fantasy, feelings, emotions, and desires so much better than live action can ever dream of. It’s jaw dropping sometimes. These worlds than can be created and these characters that can be created, it’s just amazing. Truly a work of art.

Just saw the trailer for the upcoming studio MAPPA anime Lazarus, and how this slipped past me is hard to believe. The trailer came out seven days ago, and deserves so much more notice. The director is Shinichiro Watanabe, the legend responsible for Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop. They somehow got the director of the John Wick franchise, Chad Stahelski, to design the shows action sequences. Of course you expect great animation from MAPPA, but man, they really seem to be going all out for this one.

9:24 Animation in the west from Sony, Dreamworks, and Paramount, is getting a lot better, as well as independent animation. I just wish Disney, Pixar, and Nickelodeon, and any other animation studios that got too comfortable in the 2010s, can change as well, because people want new good shows, but a lot of big animation companies in the west aren't making good animated shows or movies with good quality art, animation, and narrative and artistic direction, and it dissapoints us heavily. Too many sequels, reboots, or shows or movies with plots that have already been done. Marketing may have a part in people knowing what they're in for, but the shows and movie from studios in the west feel so corporate and uninspired it pains us and disinterests us from watching future production from these studios. Hopefully things can change, but until then I'll watch my animation from the east, and normal movies and shows from the US.

As someone who's into Tolkien and has a passion for animation (I'm considering becoming an animator), fans like to discuss how an adaptation of Tolkien's works could be, and most of them assume it should be live action by default. I strongly disagree with that idea, because I believe animation is far superior when it comes to representing magic or monumentality convincingly, of which there's a lot in the books. The pilot was an absolutely sensational, blow-out success, and the support for it shows all you need to know about animation nowadays. Helluva Boss did the same, and of course plenty of others, like Charlie mentioned. We truly are in a golden age of animated production, especially from independent studios. I think the long story short is that writers and animators have just finally cracked the code as to what people actually want to see. Totally here for it! the two episodes of one piece that are coming on august 6th and august 13th might be some of the best of animation as well. The crew that are directing and animating these episodes are completely stacked with extremely good animators, one piece fans have been eating good and we're about to eat even better. I wanted to mention this since i have really high hopes for it

If you want to know what his bar of quality for animation is, look at his Newgrounds level anime opening. He straight up got scammed. He doesn't know the difference between good animation and bad animation. He called Invincible Season 1 'fluid'.

For a second I didn't know what he meant when charlie said Kyoto animation, then realised I've just never heard anyone refer to them by anything but kyoani

Charlie, if you haven't seen Lackadaisy, please, please do. They recently released a pilot episode and a season 1 teaser with incredible animation and artstyle. The amount of passion and hard work that's went into it is incredible.

I’m so glad that Charlie is so passionate about animation. There are so many fantastic independent animated shows on KZitem right now. Like Lackadaisy, Helluva Boss and Murder Drones !!

Animation in America has improved drastically over the last few years. Nowhere close to studios like Mappa but I think it's safe to say we are on the way.

American animation and Japanese animation are two completely different styles. American animation looks more "professional" with better capturing of realism, lighting etc. - Whereas Japanese animation is more "creative" with a more artistic tone that makes effects (such as energy blast, explosions) and cinematic shots appear nicer. It depends on which style you prefer but don't cut one down when they are both very good

True, but we gotta admit that old animation had his touch too. For example, akira.

Big Mouth going off the air by itself will dramatically improve the average American animation quality

I feel like Disney can compete with Mappa but Disney also makes a lot of bad choices like canceling the owl house

It’s kinda wild to think about being in a park playing basket Ball and then someone like Charlie coming up and taping you on the knee and asking to play. Must be like accidentally stepping over Tom cruise on the side walk.
