It seems like a good point, but it's not; it's diversion from their intentions. Edit: It's eerie because that's exactly how the people who the cybermen are based on: psychopaths. The cybermen, are literally, a race of psychopathic humans that have completely converted their flesh for what amounts to a humanoid tank, driven by their impulse for power leaving behind only destruction. The cyber men in this use the same diversion tactics and manipulation tactics that psychopaths are studied to use , where as modern day cybermen might as well just be androids

@@monarch_9634it’s not a non-sequitur, it’s just an argument that takes a more en passant approach to their concern. His logic is sound in that if she’s concerned for people, she displays weirdly selective choice in this moment. Interesting how they aren't immediately hostile as they are in the new iterations: they even introduce themselves in this kindly reasonable tone and ask questions with genuine curiosity. It's so fascinating actually how different they are. Much more polite here. Almost like they're going to respectfully ask that the humans be upgraded rather than hold them at gun point. Of course that's still what they'll resort to when necessary, but this sort of politeness does make it more disturbing in many ways.

At this point in the universe, it's first contact for the Cybermen, so they are genuinely curious. Pre-Time War, they become more and more belligerent just from other planets fighting back and realise they must upgrade by force. Post-Time War, universal history changed massively, and my assumption is that the John Lumic Cybermen were programmed to upgrade by force, in the same vein that Daleks kill indiscriminately, and that bled through all other Cybermen in the universe by the end.

The original Cybermen were brilliant creations. They look like exactly what they are: cyborgs. They still have human hands for example. They are clearly still people of some sort, with a mobile life support system and body parts replaced with machines. It is directly stated that they still have human brains, just surgically altered to remove emotions. The costumes are great - you are left wondering exactly wat is left under the mask. The speech is dead right as well. It is made to sound as though it is speech assembled from recorded words, with very odd intonations and inflections. Clearly human speech, but spoken in an inhuman way. Right down to the way they open their mouths to speak but otherwise speak like a robot would. In many ways _these_ Cybermen were the most emotionless of the lot. "Care? No. Why should I care. People are dying all over your world yet you do not care about them"

I saw these when I was three. They scared me so much that my parents stopped watching Doctor Who completely. I was so afraid of them, that even pictures of them in a comic strip was enough to give me nightmares. A favourite children's comic in the 1960's was called 'TV Comic'. It had a long running Doctor Who comic strip in it. Unfortunately for me, the Cybermen they liked to use were these Mondasian ones, and mum had to look in every issue to see if they were featured. If they were, she'd cut out the pages with them in. Many years later, someone gave me a load of books as a birthday gift. One was the novelisation of 'The Tenth Planet', which I'd forgotten about. The cover illustration brought me out in goosebumps. Those first Cybermen, were, and are, so damn creepy.

I never saw Peter Capaldi carry himself with that kind of confidence unless he was angry. When he was pissed off, Capaldi could summon the Oncoming Storm but when he was in any other emotional state, he was just a normal old man. For example, look at when he says "I'm the Doctor and I will be your victim this evening. Are you my mummy?" in Mummy on the Orient Express. William Hartnell would have approached the creature defiantly, even as "this old body of mine is wearing a bit thin" (just watch him step into the firing line in The War Machines while trained soldiers run for cover), but Capaldi, despite being in better health, was noticeably nervous and bordering on panic when he yelled "We surrender!" William Hartnell could project authority and confidence no matter what emotional state he was in. Look at when he says goodbye to Susan for example. You can tell that his hearts are breaking but he maintains a stiff upper lip and "no regrets, no tears, no anxieties" because he truly believes he's doing what's best for Susan. Even on the occasions where he stumbled over his lines, Hartnell never faltered and the times where he playfully mocked his enemies, such as when he effortlessly transitioned from being defiant towards the Celestial Toymaker by saying "Never! Never my friend!" to laughing at him mere seconds later as he said "You have been defeated!" showed an inner strength that Peter Capaldi lacked.

@@dr.feelgoodmalusphillips2475 I dunno what that guy' talking about. How is planing to induce a nuclear winter, killing a man who' pleading for peace, spreading a deadly plague to exterminate most of the human race, or turning people into mentally broken cyborgs who' rapidly decays in the matter of weeks...Not cruel? That' literally alll in their first two stories alone.

When the Cybermen were first introduced I've always wondered whether the writers originally had them down as a one-off or whether they were intended on making them permanent. Either way the way in which they've evolved is interesting, they started off as partially humanoid-looking with human eyes, humans and movement to now completely mechanical

I was glad they were brought back in WEAT but I can't help but think they de-creepified them a bit. The bare hands were replaced with rubber gloves and the eye holes were covered up with a black mesh. Being able to see the bare hands and those few shots where you could see straight through to the human eyes within were the factors that really made them creepy for me.
@jimf8047

They did de-creepify them a bit in that way, but made the human bandage connection all the more explicit and the heartbreaking "pain pain pain" for why emotions were removed. Wow!
@paladinboyd1228

And gave them a head mounted laser for some reason and Rocket boots. Which made them look like iron man from wish than a haunting disturbing husk of humanity hellbent on survival no matter the cost.

@@paladinboyd1228 And _when_ do you suppose they'd be able to add that bit of dialogue in? More importantly, why would the surgeons care about that sort of thing when they're far more concerned about their own survival? Peter Capaldi himself had protested against the gloves, knowing that the 1966 Cybermen didn't have them, but accepted the explanation and moved on; clearly it's not _too_ difficult to move on from such a minor nitpick. Personally, I think the gloves _add_ to their creepiness because they're skin-toned, making them seem like they're _trying_ to look more human than they actually are.

I remember for Christmas 2007 I asked for Cybermen the Early years, as I’d already had Daleks The early years, and I remember at my NaN and Grandads putting the tape in their kitchen, and just being frightened by these first designs, a combination of the Black and white and grainy footage helped that a lot, I still find them scary to this day. Although it’s a shame that the design was ruined in recent years, thanks to the Lips, the gloves and that god damn stomping noise

With the advances in prosthetic technology, such as limbs and even some internal organs like battery powered hearts it is most definitely possible and could horrifyingly become a reality. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for tech that will help people, but if it ever gets to this point in the human race I'm either hiding in a cave or taking my own life. Screw being forced to live in a metal suit where u can't enjoy lifes most basic experiences.
