*WEAPONS* - Lionheart's Stalwart (targe + dial + crossbow) - Vernal's weapons (wind-and-fire blades + laser cutters) - Watts may be smug, but he's got a level head on him. He knows exactly why Cinder would be willing to take such a tight risk. - Eh...talking is a free action. That's pretty much standard in these action-based cartoons. - So remember Ilia's line about humans who stand by and let the hate happen? That also applies to Faunus like her, whether she wanted to admit it or not. - Ozpin's line about not needing many bad people to cause harm is...pretty apt, even nowadays. Even then, I still believe that there's a grand majority in the world who don't want the worst to happen. - Well, at least Leo isn't afraid to admit that he's afraid, RAVEN. - Even with Blake's heightened night vision, the lack of lighting cuts down on contrast between blackened Ilia and the walls. - Ending hate takes more effort, yes, but that does make it worth more. - Fun fact: Mata's name is an anagram of "tama", JP for "sheep". Heh. - So...quick reminder that Blake's part of Volumes 4 and 5 is a month earlier than everyone else. - Jaune has been waiting for who-knows-how-long to say THAT. It's another great testament to Miles Luna's voice-acting. (To be fair, I think Cinder genuinely didn't recall him at first.) - If anything, Raven isn't honest - not with others, and likely not with herself. - Real a__hole move to shape her Weiss-stabbing weapon like Pyrrha's...!

I mean, he did grow up constantly reminded of the superstitions around his namesake being a bad omen. It's not much of a stretch to suggest that when Qrow first unlocked his semblance and noticed that it can trip up others (as the first thing he sees it do) he subconsciously saw that as confirmation of those and didn't think to explore potential positive aspects. Confirmation bias based on latent emotional trauma. Same way Weiss "knew" she was unable to use summons for the longest time, pretty much.

With the last few lines of that episode, we find out that their respective timelines are not played in chronological order. The Battle for Belladonna Manor took place a couple weeks before the other scenes that episode, just before Full Moon. In other words, around New Moon. And indoors at night? We probably were allowed to see more as audience, but Blake and Ilia likely were fighting in all but total darkness that even Faunus would have difficulty seeing in.

Near perfect vision at night is probably an exaggeration. In the real world night vision is black and white vision, all rod cells, actually if you have more rod cells you probably have less cone cells so the Faunus with good night vision probably have poorer day vision then humans so near perfect vision is worse for them then for you. Their vision may be like your peripheral vision, less color and sharpness but handles low light better. And if the have the reflective eyes feature that would further half the light the need to see. Also Ilia's weapon only has the glow on the blade when it extends into whip mode, otherwise there is only thin lines on the hilt glowing. It wasn't glowing before the attack where the sword extended into whip mode with a big thrust..

I was more commenting on how it was delivered and how that registered at the time, to me at least. The way Blake worded it sounded to me like "sorry Ilya, I'm not into girls" - which massively confused me when half a season later Bumblebee happened. -It didn't help that the relationship between Yang and Blake had been very confusing ever since late Vol 3, jumping from one stance to the next without any real buildup.-

@@davidkoudelka10 Not exactly none, but it went from them coexisting as casual friends (Yang didn't have a big reaction when Blake ran away after her revelation as Faunus) over having a single deeper conversation in order to keep Blake from burning herself out (before the Dance) and the sudden distrust after Yang was tricked in the tournament, to suddenly hating her guts when Blake makes the same irrational decision she did in Vol 1 and ran away (because her past caught up to her in the worst way possible) after the Fall of Beacon. And Yang pulls that through all the way until they reunite, which culminates in what's effectively a bigger version of the Weiss reconciliation from the Vol 1 finale. But somehow that leads to them _actually_ being together - and not just trauma-bonded either. I guess you could see all that back and forth as a buildup, but to me it was too all over the place to feel coherent. Like we missed crucial sections that showed how one transitioned into the other. Left me with multiple cases of narrative whiplash. 🤷 Blake had more on-screen chemistry with Sun, Ilia and even Weiss than with Yang for most of the series up to that point, and Yang didn't really treat Blake any different than anyone else before the Fall. In the end they work together, yes - but to me the way they got there never felt organic.

Emerald, who’s abilities revolve around messing with the perception of her targets on top of having ranged weapons that can bind and restrain targets from a distance, decides to physically throw herself at Yang as the latter runs towards the opening to Haven’s Vault. @@lordssenthe3st493 Outside your statement of punch flaccidity (animation slowness is a flaw I agree with), punching is something he would know how to do and would do. Him not punching and just kicking would logically be holding back, which would mean he was holding back less. Surprise is a factor in stunned ness, more so than force, no hit that doesn't deplete aura stuns through its strength. .5/1 Animation failings are valid but it doesn't speak to common sense Asking if the staff was a relic is valid, that she doesn't ask a different potentially relevant question (its not, ozpin doesn't actually have silver eyed powers, you presume he could train her without knowing the actual feelings involved, which for emotion based powers is really dumb), isn't really that much of a failing. .75/1 they should have implied more questions asked offscreen. Her aura was lowered during the fight due to persistent use of her semblance prior, furthermore since everyone by then knew of the semblance yang could and would have just ignored any such illusion. (not negated it, just ignored it) 0/1 by far the weakest actually valid, though I doubt she could hit vernal with any bindings and I doubt she could match vernal's speed even with dilation, basically she was slated to lose the fight sadly. She may have thought that the hail mary was her only shot, but that we don't even see her attempt another tactic makes this valid 1/1 You did better than most. @@janehrahan5116 I’m primarily a boxer and am most comfortable with my hands, though I also have experience using kicks through Karate and Muy Thai, that doesn’t mean that in a no-holds-barred fighter I’m going to use something that I don’t normally use nor do I have a track-record of using. In any kind of serious fight, the logic of ‘they’d know how to do it so they’d use it’ doesn’t hold up at all because of habits developed by experience; the heavyweight boxer Deontae Wilder for example knows how to bob and weave or dance around the ring, but because of the specific way he has ALWAYS fought in EVERY single fight, he doesn’t use that specific technique because he’s hard-wired to fight a certain way. It’s especially prevalent when you consider Merc’s track record of HOW he fights even when he isn’t serious or going for the win (Pyrrha, Yang, Ruby in volumes 2-3), he has NEVER thrown a punch on an open target, but that suddenly changes NOW? Also as someone with actual fight experience, there’s absolutely a difference between getting surprised by a punch from someone as strong as Yang and a weak headbutt from someone much weaker and less skilled, Mercury in no way should’ve been stunned that hard by a shot like that from someone far weaker and lighter (Ruby’s 110 lbs and Yang is around 130-40, TRUST me that weight makes a difference). We know for a fact that Ozpin is not only aware of what the Silver eyes are capable of but likely at least some idea how they work too. If Maria was able to suddenly be confronted with the knowledge of the God of Light’s powers and immediately piece together their origins, then Ozpin, someone who has not only been alive during the time when the Gods were around but also has had made use of MULTIPLE Silver-Eyed warriors as allies, it’s a fairly safe assumption that he’d at least be able to guide Ruby down the path to using them more effectively. Ruby asking Ozpin the cane question serves no real narrative purpose to push the story further forward, which always felt like one of the biggest issues of the volume. Aaah, but you’ve ignored Em’s weapons, which are both guns and chain-scythes, weapons with more than enough range to at least restrain Yang (look at how far Emerald yanked Coco, someone bigger than Yang, in volume 3)! We also know that Rwby characters in general are still capable of using their weapons at max-capability when on low or even NO aura (look at Ruby in Weiss’s mansion fighting the Hound). And on TOP of that, we actually don’t know how much aura she had left, except that she was evidently capable of making up to TEN people susceptible to her illusions before she went unconscious with an illusion powerful enough to disorient them all! I do see what you mean with Vernal being naturally fast though, but I still thank that Weiss at this point (who was much better control and output with her Semblance as a whole) should’ve been able to match her speed. I’ll also admit that you’re right on the money when you say that most of my issues with the volume stem from how poorly executed the finale was.
