Hi Friends! We wanted to say how grateful we are not only for what this experience of boat life taught us but also for your support along the way. I know this video was a big surprise for a lot of you, but the fact that we have this incredible community that is open to supporting people seek a life that gives them purpose, gives people the space to change their minds, and no matter what shows an open-heartedness to keep going when things don't turn out according to plan, well it just gives us so much joy and hope. There is also a bunch of people who I'm sure were really only interested in our story if it was a sailing story. We totally understand that perspective and feel no ill feelings towards you guys. Feel free to unsubscribe and keep following all the other incredible people sharing their sailing adventures here on youtube! I know absolutely nothing about thin places, but in 25 years of cruising I have seen a lot of people attempting passages they didn’t have the experience for and be scared back to terra firma real fast. Having really enjoyed following your sailing adventure, I was shocked by you trying on the passage to Bermuda already, lacking at least a couple of seasons of coastal sailing before heading out on the big blue. Anyway, you seem very happy with the change of plans, and I wish you the best of luck in your next adventure.

We and they will never know how it would have been for them od they would pick up sailing on a normal pace and slow coastal sailing .Maybe they would decided other way then. Thanks so much for the beautiful comment, its really nice to see other people making similar style decisions because I feel like its not something people talk much about these days and based on the amount of hate you can get for stuff like this I kind of see why, but its an important part of life, and I think its a really good call on your part! I actually did a double major in school and looking back there was really no need for it at all, one would have been enough and I would have gotten more out of the one than a wider view from two. The reasons you are feeling this way 1) You don't have a lot of experience, and made a very challenging crossing before you were ready for it. 2) You crossed at perhaps the worst time possible, in the middle of storm season You should have waited until you were more prepared and experienced.

If anything, we should have bought a cheaper boat in the carribean and sailed around there, but with covid shutdowns that would have backfired massively and we would have been separated from the boat for a very very long time like all the other cruising couples during lockdown. for the passage from Bermuda to the carribean, we could have easily enlisted some friends who are professional sailors or even a captain, but like we said, we genuinely aren't interested in sailing or living aboard anymore. sometimes you just change what your interested in. --Lou

For others reading this and from my perspective as an experienced yachtsman… if you are thinking of getting a boat please follow this advice. Sailing is technically difficult. It is completely foreign if you’ve got no experience. So, if you think you can jump on a boat and learn yourself from KZitem don’t. It’s like snow skiing, If you teach yourself at the end of the first week you’ll be still trying to ski beginner runs. If you get some help from day one at the end of the week you’ll be more than likely to want to try black runs. Sailing takes years not days. Being highly critical these guys never got off the green runs. Im not being mean I’m just giving you an observation I’ve seen repeated over and over. I’ve seen it destroy relationships and financially challenge people. Sailing is really great but the trick is to get rid of the training wheels as quickly as possible and maybe even do it on someone else’s boat first. KZitem and cruising books are not going to get you there. You can be stubborn all you like but ignoring expert advice is at your peril. Good luck WWR

I've been following you guys since early Plant Based Traveler and I was a bit afraid commenting here because I don't want to come out as negative or dismissive of your feelings, but here goes! I can only imagine how scary this must have been for you, but the truth is... This is dangerous and you guys were not prepared. I can imagine it was a bummer that so many people kept saying you should take classes, but I gave the benefit of the doubt because I assumed you would ease into it slowly. And I believe you can only take the most out of sailing after a lot of experience, gaining confidence! Learning on the go is a risk for trauma and getting your dream crushed. Of course after the trauma you guys went through, this is what happened and a farm is going to look like paradise! I'm not saying this is the wrong move, you should do what makes you happy, but maybe you would still like to do some more introspection on what happened? Because from the outside it doesn't sound like a "we did it, and we want to move on". Anyway, it's ok to admit to be overwhelmed or unprepared after a first experience, this is what I'm trying to say. And I don't say this with any ill intention. I think you guys are still amazing! Regardless of the outcome, you went out and did something most people only spend their whole lives talking about!

I think this is a cautionary tale for people who take an ocean passage of any kind lightly. You don't seem to know how to navigate with a paper chart or losing your electronics may not have been such a panic moment. And it didn't look like you had ever made a plan B exit strategy where you could duck into safety near shore in case the weather got to be more than you could handle. You're lucky you didn't get into any really serious weather. And you’re lucky you had a really good, true, blue water boat that took care of you. I'm sorry to see you're giving up on a dream after one bad experience instead of trying to learn from it and be more prepared before trying it again. Sailing can have its scary moments, but like you showed in the first 3 days of your passage, it’s also so rewarding. If there is a next time, I would recommend a navigation class or two… you can find them just about anywhere. And maybe do short one or two day hops from port to port until you feel comfortable with something longer. Congratulations on making it to your destination!

Lou & Dana, Is there any way back to this? Clearly you embarked upon a zero to hero sailing adventure, but you jumped all the steps in between. Why not have the boat moved down to the Caribbean by a delivery crew - it's a very well set up boat now and considerable investment of time and money. Once in the islands you can take your time and learn the skills you need to make longer journeys. Decisions made when tired or emotional aren't good ones. Reflect on what you've achieved - resilience and experience aren't read about or bought, they are earned through graft and grit and enable you to bounce back stronger. You made fundamental errors in how you manage the boat on passage, all entirely understandable as you're just starting out, but it's a fabulous way to explore the world. You've made the first brave steps - and on any adventure there are bumps along the way. Get up, dust yourselves off and get back to it. You must not give up so easily on a circumnavigation at the first hurdle. Learn and move on - how much stronger will you be then. It might not be for you but don't delude yourselves that you've scratched that itch yet. Don't quit.

All of the reasons you gave in the video and description are all positive outcomes to take from your experience, but I think I, and perhaps others too, feel like we missed a step in the journey to the decision. Do you have any regrets, was the sailing experience all you had hoped it would be? Was the sailing experience as harrowing as it was portrayed in your last video, that had some part in your decision? I bought a school bus renovated it into a motor home . It took a year to do, everyone was so excited for me 6 mo in I hated living in it. I froze so much that first winter I cried myself to sleep...when summer came and I began to bake in my lovely beautiful metal tube...I just couldn’t do it anymore. I felt like I had egg on my face..how could I admit that I hated it after the big build up to ALL my friends and Family. I cried when the new owner drove her away...yet I was so RELIEVED at the same time. I completely get it...❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

My husband and I feel that we have a connection to the couple that both are We are are a lot older but in many ways we have experience your journey. I am 67 and my husband is 75 , He is from New Hampshire and I am from NJ. Our journey together has led us into many paths . Gardening ( becoming food self sufficient) , Sailing , Kayaking, Biking, Flying, Boat Building and Traveling. . I first found you when we purchased our 22 ft Catalina sailboat. We had just finished building a 17 sailing dory but felt a need for something else. While watching you go from a Van to purchasing a sailboat , we sold our home , bought a third 15 ft trailerable sailboat and downsized our home drastically. Our friends in NH though we were nuts While you were working our your boat we refurbished the 15 ft sailboat including sewing new sails and cushions, Our thoughts were to trailer it to enjoy the Arizona Lakes this winter. It was wonderful trip but We too had that moment where we realized that we accomplished our goal and we needed to let go. . Fast forward 7 months and we sold the dory and the the 15 foot sailboat. We are happy be in our retirement home on the Jersey shore and sail the Barnegat bay in NJ on the Catalina. The skills you learned from your experiences and the discipline of beckoning sailors will serve you well in whatever you next chapter is. Not sure if we are correct but is sure seemed you are looking into some sort of Hobby Farm . If so and since you are in NH Please look up. Hidden Meadows farms in Eliot ME. Just over the NH boarder . Ric and Janee are friends . They have done wonders with their hobby farm Mostly growing lavender and grapes and they are always happy to share . Well anyway good luck with your future and if you choose to be on you tube again your videos are top notch , So real. We have enjoyed your journeys.

When I saw you both so thrilled to see land and being on land on the last video I knew the ocean wouldn’t be for you. It can be beautiful but it is also so scary…I have been on a few sailboats for island hoping and short passages and wouldn’t dare an Atlantic crossing, even with experienced people, because I just wouldn’t know what to do in case something really bad happened and it all changes so quickly…a little rain on land doesn’t compare to what it feels like out there. Yeah you can't really know what sailing offshore is like on your own until you do it. Obviously coastal cruising gives you a small taste (and can be dangerous too) and going out offshore with a professional captain would get you used to the enviroment, but its not the same as being out there on your own. I thought it a bit odd that you had decided to become "sailors", obviously having not had much experience of sailing. Passage making can be exciting, enlightening, interesting. Yet, for the most part, it is tedious and exhausting. I'm 67 and decided, some years ago, that a month on a boat crossing the Atlantic was an experience doing it several times is a job! I just helped a mate bring his boat back from Faro, Portugal, to the west coast of England. It was OK, there was time for introspection and there was some excitement. I prefer a bit of day sailing. As I say, I thought it odd that you just dived in there bought a, very good, boat and thought you'd circumnavigate the globe.. Perhaps smaller steps would have been wiser initially. I have friends who love taking off on their own for extensive voyages - very few! I got back from Portugal 3 days ago, gee but it's great to be back home!

I totally agree, I was wondering why you didn't hop down the coast south, go to Shelter IslandNY, hop from there to places along the coast on the ICW, maybe go out in the ocean for a few overnight passages to start.....but to cross 1/2 the Atlantic...hmmm, I was worried about you guys, still so glad you are safe, but I wonder if you did smaller steps would you still be sailing...or not

I hope this 'journey' into and out of boat life is viewed by all those other youtubers who think you can just buy a boat and set off with no experience, let this be a lesson to all, the ocean DEMANDS respect. Who in their right mind would replace a chart table with cupboards and state they don't need it because they're going electronic. Honestly! That said, fair play for being honest and sharing the ending here, albeit wrapped up in some thin place mumbo jumbo.

Covid has changed world travel for foreseeable future and a move towards off grid and self sustainability is a great move. Dana, you may have not said, “Farm life is a dream”, but in your videos it was clear you loved and missed the farm life you experienced during the Odie build. My husband grew up with sailing, he was on a sailboat when he was just a few weeks old, so I had the opportunity to experience sailing. Conditions can change rapidly and the ocean is unforgiving. In my short boat time we experience dead calm seas to winds and waves that had the experienced sailors on edge, and we assisted in two rescues. You had a dream and accomplished it. I watched you transform in your last video. Congratulations. Thank you for sharing your journey.

You're both such exceptional and inspiring individuals. It was extremely courageous to sail across an ocean but PLEASE BE EQUALLY COURAGEOUS ABOUT SHARING WHAT REALLY HAPPEN. Raw honesty can also be so powerful and inspiring in a story. Please note that this is not meant to be a negative comment. There is much I respect and admire about you both such as Lou's quiet wisdom and strength and Dana's creativity and storytelling. However, something feels missing in the last two vlogs which is why many people are making assumptions and trying to fill in the gaps. There is no need to try to save face, or feel embarrassed about changing your minds, or justify your life decisions to us because you have the right to do whatever pleases you. I'm not saying that you're trying to save face, etc. I don't know because pieces of the story are missing and it would be respectful to us supporters if we were told all of the story. I wish you both all the best in the next phase of your life. 💙

I know they called mayday and requested towing, reporting exhaustion. They recentLy took down the video right before they left us for several months and there were a lot of unhappy KZitemrs who just wanted a brief update here or on Instagram. I can understand their decision to sell the boat, not wanting to take the risks of blue water cruising. They never understood that they weren’t ready for a passage this far and needed more experience. Sharing more detail might help others in their beginning sailing dreams. But I also understand this is their channel, and this story is theirs after all. They are young and adventurous and I’m sure more chapters and exploration are ahead. I’ve watched since Berlin and before Odie so I will continue to see how their lives evolve. I wish them well.

My partner and I had a sailing dream a few years back, we lost a lot of money on a sailboat that never left its slip. Even getting the mast up was unmanageable for us. Watching the chapters of your journey was sobering and humbling. Thank you for the astounding images of the water and for such inspiring storytelling.

Thank you for being so inspiring. I practicly never leave comments (and I'm not fluent in english so excuse any mispells), but I had to write a big thank you. I've been following for the last year and a half, and your content is so different from any others I've seen. Not only your videos are always flawless and beautiful, but you are so authentic and profound. You put forward the most important travel of it all, the most amazing, rewarding and difficult: the inner travel. Please never stop to be real with us. Love!

Dear Lou & Dana, thanks for being honest to yourselves and us. I am actually very happy that you made that decision as I was in constant worry that sth. bad might happen to you out in the Atlantic. And actually, I am not even really interested in sailing content - just watching because you guys were so enthusiastic about it and inspired in how much effort you put into it... I subscribed and will stay for your wonderful way of story-telling, the peaceful ambience of your content, the crisp sound of your videos and your perspectives on life in general. I wish you all the best for your new plans and can't wait to see more of you guys in the future!

Just watched this episode twice. It won't be the last time either. You both captured your "thin place" decision with so much emotion, chosen words and music. I have attended numerious motivational retreats and personal development off site meetings as a senior executive but non had the power of this video. I think you showed what you said you couldn't describe. I will be eagerly awaiting the future with you guys. Be well Lou and Dana.

I've loved watching your journey and glad I found your channel. I'm shelving my pipe dream of owning a blue water yacht. Thanks.

You don’t just jump on a boat from roaming in a van.ha your thin place was when you realized that sailors you are not.I knew you were not going to make it as a sailing video couple. You are lucky to have so many viewers, I watched just to see you say you couldn’t do it,you didn’t last as long as I thought.Thin place definition:You both were scared absolutely to death. Why don’t you just say it??I would think your viewers would respect you both more……you are quitting 😉
