Great review, reminded me why I enjoyed this series! I still need to go back to read the finale, but it's such a chunker hahaha. Couldn't agree more on the characters, they really pull you in on an emotional level. Considering your minor critiques, I think you will be very pleased with book 2. Also, you truly have NO idea what Shackle has in store for you, this series has some of the most unexpected twists I have ever come across... buckle up! 🤩🤩

I am in the middle of the final book now and it has been a really wonderful series, it feels fresh and different not like other fantasy novels. I think the evil side is so freaking interesting too. I love that the war elements reflect so much of WWII. I would give it 4 stars too as I would recommend it to be on your TBR.

I just loved this book as well. It certainly fit the description of grim dark as well as being inventive in the world building. As it turns out, the three books were the last books I was able to order before The Book Depository shut down. I still have to read books 2 and 3 (hopefully, before the end of the year) and I expect Mike Shackle will deliver.

This book has some strong points, though I was mixed on it overall. Tinnstra was the standout character for me, although, yes, the cowardice dragged a bit. I didn't care much for Dren, though I'm probably the odd man out here. The villains, particularly the brother, also fell flat for me. The plot and pacing were the strongest aspect of this book, and I have to give Mike Shackle a lot of credit for crafting a fast-paced narrative.

I think it’s tough to say that one’s tastes either align or don’t completely. I think readers often overlap and diverge at different points along that line, depending on a lot of variables. But I get it though, if someone you usually don’t agree with recommend something, it’s hard to take a shot!

Great series, love the plot of it all....I will say the main female character was annoying as all hell for most of that first book. Also, I'm always annoyed when you have this hellish battlefield of an enviornment where the tough are going to survive and will lead in these scenarios but in this case 2 of the main characters is a 15/16yr old boy and an 18/19yr old girl...like seriously, these 2 aren't going to be the main/best protagonists to have in a world like this...especially when that 18yr old girl is a self professed coward...just, come on. Also the bad guys weren't really fleshed out that well in the first book. My negatives here aren't severe though, still a really good read, but if those nitpicks were better for me this could be an all timer series. Anyway, the story itself is fantastic.
@RekindledReader

I totally understand that - yeah we basically align in our criticisms! I hear the over all plot and journey of the trilogy as a whole is completely worth it. Very excited to continue with it. Thanks for watching!
