Tip . To clean areas up ready for reassemble you can use spray cans of degreaser or spray can of brake cleaner . You can buy these from auto parts shops . This will make your job a lot easier to reassemble without the muck and grease . Those bolts you are using stud lock paste on must be extremely clean for it to work . Well done fir giving it a go .

I agree, the guitar is the best part of a not-too-bad situation. Quite nice. Jasmine, since you have admitted to feeling "like a bad-ass" after doing some mechanical works, we hope that you take the victory in stride. Good judgement on everybody's part (which is much better than BAD judgement! ) Nice to have a brother with diesel abilities! Sometimes a 'laying on of hands" can be very helpful.

we have a few pots in the egine bay i think thats what you saw, one under the stearn glad to catch water with the bilge pump in, and another under the engine so we can see if oil or fule or antthing is leaking from the engine, and dispose of it approriately, sometime the water from the stern goes to the one under the engine when the stearn gland needs tightening.

You guys should look into getting a Knipex Cobra or Alligator pliers. They will make your life a whole lot easier. Just one or two of those in 2 different sizes (big and small) will obsolete all yer spanners (or wrenches as we call them state-side). Best of luck for the winter.

Here is a top tip for everyone, thread locker will not work well if the area is contaminated with oil or grease before its applied, clean everything with degreaser first. Tip number two, get yourself a good set of spanners, adkustable spanners will only damage the corners on the nuts and make it more difficult to work with in the future.

I live in a MotorHome, 40 feet long, Diesel Engine. Which lost power 1000miles from home. I spent a week at a Truck Fuel Stop, Saw 3 Experienced Diesel Mechanics, spent $706.00 on a new fuel pump, which did Not cure the problem. The third mechanic pulled one of the 2 fuel filters and there was a glob of Black Goo in it. Bacteria in my fuel had clogged both filters, there is a treatment to keep the bacteria from clumping together and stopping fuel flow. We put the treatment in the tank, replaced both filters, and I was merrily on my way, again. Over $1200.00 poorer, plus a pump I didn't need. That was on a Sunday, Double time for the mechanic. The cure is to have your fuel tank steam cleaned !! A week at a gas station is not a vacation! Adding chemicals to my fuel every time I fuel up is a pain---. So I had the tank cleaned. Which reminds me I need to sell a used pump..

Oh the joys of narrowboating! Breaking down whilst cruising can be quite stressful. I've had mine for 13 years now and I reckon 25% of the mechanical and electrical parts have been replaced. Fortunately I've only broken down once while cruising and that was due to a broken 'fan' belt, not expensive but it held us up for two days as the nearest chandler had to order one. Not an expensive repair but we were low on water and stuck in the middle of nowhere. Needless to say I carry a spare now! Anyway I'm glad you're now all sorted and back on the go.

Look over all of the engine and power shaft to prop I would once a week. And a quick look before you get on your way. If you need help to remember. Do it when you get water. Check oil before you leave out and get a monkeys fist with a y in it( it’s a rope with a ball of rope some times with wooden core) so you can use it to catch a tree , boat tie off or a dock. You can look up how to make one. It’s like a hook without sharp points.

That bolt which broke is the mechanical version of an electrical fuse: it broke instead of you having to deal with a broken gear box or shattered prop shaft. The clutch was damaged, but it wasn't destroyed. I know it was really stressy but it was all only an inconvenience, not really a problem. As a previous commenter said: Stay away from trees while this storm is around. You really will have a problem if one comes down on you. Stay safe, and please keep posting!

With an inboard/outboard engine owner there's always something going on with them little boogers. Just THANK GOD MY HUSBAND CAN FIX THEM, but 3 yrs ago we had to have her rebuilt & didn't have an engine puller & it took 2 engines to make one & since we had the engine pulled out we ran new live well lines, bc that's the only way to change them in a 1984 Ranger fish & ski boat & there's 2 live well lines. They pump fresh water to tanks for fishing & keep the fish alive. So we had the money & killed 2 problems in 1. It wouldn't of took so long, but we had to find a 2nd boat with the same engine & that wasn't easy. Glad you got it sorted out, Chris from Missouri

You need to keep that mechanic, his fault finding was spot on. My experience with things breaking on my boat, like the alternator, which happened three days out of the Cap Verdi's, so no way of sailing back against the trades, never mind I thought, I'll just conserve electricity, so I turned the VHF off I turned the GPS off and used a torch instead of the interior lights at night. I turned on the masthead tricolour at night, and every 24 hrs I turned on the GPS to mark my position on the chart. This I thought would give me enough amps to start the engine to get into an anchorage when I reached the Carib. Five miles from St Lucia I started the engine, and the water pump stopped working. So I had to sail into an anchorage I had never been into before, but it was not too bad as there was a good breeze. The chandlers in St Lucia told me the water seal for my pump was no longer available, but if I gave them about $3K they'd ship me a new 10 HP Yanmar diesel from the USA. A water seal should have been about $7, and I already had a spare impellor and oil seal, so I emailed my brother in law in the UK and he mailed me the water seal. Problem was by the time I had the part and fixed the engine, the Hurricane season was here.... So I rode out Harvey, Irma and Maria at anchor. They want about $250 US to change the diode on my alternator, but I know its only a twenty quid part, so been using a 30 amp solar panel for all my electricity for the last year until I get to Grenada where I'm sure I can get a cheap diode. Would love to have a narrow boat, not so keen on the CRT charges and the English weather, or the mooring charges, and as a lifelong smoker, I'd need a bank loan to buy a pack of 20. Love your channel and subbed.

We live near Seattle and just bought an ex-hire boat and expect to have mechanical items fail due to prior use. I'm starting by having all the coolant hoses and alternate belt replaced, stern gland repacked while the boat is out of the water for survey, blacking and a new BSS. Then it'll be an electrical land line, solar panels and possibly a multi-fuel stove. Hope to be on the cut mid March. We'll make narrowboat videos too. We'll be looking for you.

There is an old saw which says that a boat is a hole in the water into which you pour money. You might agree. I had a bolt decide to come loose and cause a similar problem with a military vehicle drive shaft that connected with a plate rather than a universal joint. Fortunately it was to the front axle and I could make it home with only the rear axle driving. I liked that John used loctite on the bolts during the first repair. Smart.

I'm really sorry that happened. There is nothing like trying to use something like, a car, a tool, a shoelace, and the second you start to go boom it fails. Its the total suck and I am sure it was horribly stressful. But it sounds like you both did a fantastic job of trying to trouble shoot where you could and then calling in the expert when you figured out you couldn't do the job. Most people don't realize the importance of admitting when you need help. They keep trying to fix it themselves and usually just make it worse, so truly well done. It looks like it was handled as well as it could have been. Fingers crossed you don't have any other issues for a very long time. Thank you for the video, it is fun to watch your adventures.

This past week my home burned to the ground, which is hard enough, but I also couldn't take time off work... if you have tried to go about your day, work hard, and do a good job, all the while having thoughts of uncertainty about your present/future situation; very troubling! When I bought my boat and went to collect it, nothing worked, I and the friend who had come to help me move if from Nantwich to Oxford tried everything, but couldn't start the engine or get any power etc. and then a very brave engineer from the maria tried jump starting it from the starter battery with 2 screwdrivers, which did the trick. turned out that since the survey, the starter battery had had it and the alternator was "a bit dodgy". Purchased a new starter battery and new alto before the boat ever moved an inch!

The 10 KW motor that drives the prop shaft on the hybrid powered narrowboat's also when you E gauge the drive from the Diesel engine turns the 10 KW motor into a generator to recharge the batteries. You can have any narrowboat retrofitted with the diesel hybrid drive system. One of the major advantages with this system is the ability to cruise the canals and listen to everything going on around you. When I looked at the system last year it wasn't 250 K, it's more around $10 K to $25K above the cost of the Diesel engine, the difference in price is which battery to drive the motor you choose. The best battery is the biggest traction battery they offer and whichever battery you choose you can charge it off the diesel or plug it in to charge it overnight.

I hate breaking down as well. Saw the Loctite you put on the screws, probably a good idea.

Jasmin, question, would your boat insurance cover for such damage?
@ThisNarrowboatAdventure

you know im not sure but in the long run didnt cost much more than the excess to fix as my bother found a cheap part for us.

I see he used lock tight on the threads a good thing to do but I would have used new locking nuts instead of re-using the old ones.

Well that sucked! Threadlock... often overlooked or underused and the results are never good!

Its a bit messy and oily down there. Do you ever clean your engine

ThisNarrowboatAdventure yea sure it is. A clean engine will show up any oil leaks. Besides that you spend all that money on a Narra why spoil it with an unkempt engine bay. Don't make sense too me.
