Another great review! I saw Tito in the 90s. Before playing Oye Como Va, he told a story. His band was playing a club and a pretty young girl came to the stage and asked of he would play that Santana song. He told her, “Young lady, we do not play Santana songs.” Then the owner of the club came to him and said that it was his daughter, and she would really like to hear that Santana number. He told the guy sternly, “We do not play Santana numbers!” He went on to say, “Shortly after this happened, I received my first royalty check. At this time we would like to do that great Santana number . . .”

I received a copy of this album on Christmas morning, 1970, along with Dylan’s New Morning and Johnny Winter And. At that time, when I was 16, I had already seen them play at the San Jose Fairgrounds with Elvin Bishop opening. They were so powerful! The fairgrounds was a wonderful venue, just a big, empty pavilion, but the acoustics were great. Before my family moved to Sesttle I had seen Santana, Deep Purple, Jethro Tull and CTA at this venue not far from my home.

I love how Santana, in addition to writing great songs of his own, chose such good songs to cover; Fleetwood Mac leading into Gabor Szabo leading into Tito Puente makes the first side of this record absolutely fantastic! EDIT: Quick background on why the band got kicked out of Peru - the military government at the time was trying to purge the country's cultural scene of "foreign" influence, and actually incited a group of radical college students to burn down the stage Santana was set to perform on before they even got there! This crackdown on rock music spelled the end for a lot of Peru's classic early 70s rock bands. The channel "Bandsplaining" does a good summary of this time period in their cumbia video.

Abraxas came from Damian. I was well into my Hesse period. And Damian was a dark journey for me. Tito Puente commented that he never got a hit from Oye Como Va. My mother's fav from the album. Santana 3 is still my favorite. Schon was a huge asset. No matter the politics the music was fantastic. Your comments are a recitation of Abraxas. All things and their opposites. I had to wait a few years (74) to see Santana live. He had changed a lot. (Not got or bad but different) Take a look at Santana's Welcome. And Caravanserai. Both textural experiences. A good review. And Santana in some form is never far from my ears. Thank you.

Portland used to have a street festival back in the day. One time I was walking from the Park Blocks down to SW Broadway, when a smallish man walked beside me for a block or so. Well, he was smaller than me anyway. I was 5 foot ten and about 200 lbs at the time. I'm smaller now. Fortunately. We didn't speak, but as he turned off from Salmon Street toward the west, I thought "Shit. That was Carlos Santana." He was appearing that night at the Portland Motor Speedway. I might've told that story before. Oh well, it was cool. As for the music? Soul Sacrifice at Woodstock. Album? Abraxas. No question. Hands down.

At last, after two weeks of albums that pretty much leave me cold, a Vinyl Monday I can really get into! While I've been a Santana fan since "Evil Ways", I didn't start buying their albums until the 90s, on CD. And "Abraxas", to some extent, eluded me. While I got a 3CD set of the band's first three albums in 1998 or so, when Sony/Columbia starting putting out their "Legacy Editions" around 2004, they did "Santana" and "Santana III" with bonus discs, but left out "Abraxas" for unknown reasons. When I got a surround system, I got a DTS Surround version of the album which was very disappointing - no bass to speak of! Finally, with the Japanese SACD surround releases, I could really enjoy the album, though I still probably gravitated to the first and third a bit more. Nevertheless, your review is spot-on: as a primarily covers-filled and heavily instrumental album, almost a concept album, it works quite well as a full listening experience. A couple of small notes: "Se A Cabo" (as spelled on the record) doesn't translate properly; "Se Acabo" translates as "It's Over" (more so than "It Is Finished"), which I could interpret as "the second side of the record after you turned it over!" In the mid-70s, radio station WHUR (Howard University Radio in Washington D.C.) used the song as a theme to some of its programming, and it wasn't until years later that I learned it was by Santana. "Hope You're Feeling Better" reminds me more of Vanilla Fudge than of Deep Purple, though DP Mark I was heavily influenced by the Fudge, so it's all of a piece, I suppose. No hint for next week?! You're keeping me in "suspenders"! :)

Nope...not even CLOSE!! The "Santana"/1st album was then, and is still now--their finest album! NO contest!! Yes, several quality songs on Abraxas,--and the classic Black Magic Woman, and excellent Oya Como Va, well done covers (yes, I knew they were at the time) but overall it pales in comparison to "Santana"!! Also the album cover. The 1st album is a classic and considered one of the Top 100 album covers of all time in Rock...with yes, Woodstock proving it! Which, btw--I was 19 years old at Woodstock!! Though throughout his career, Carlos has produced/written many outstanding songs, but no other album, with the possible exception of "Santana 3" for overall pieces and quality. I appreciate your devotion--but it truly isn't as "solid" and memorable overall to "Santana". OH, and as for my favorite Santana--BAND--song, as that seems what you're asking, not Carlos' solo efforts...I sadly cannot pick one only, as many of their songs change for me depending on time, place and mood. But without question, the most inspiring/favorite live performance? Of COURSE it's at Woodstock...hands down!! Ahh, and your HIGH to compare to Deep Purple?! And pleeeeeze--don't overdue it or "oversell" this or any other rock album to us "mere mortals"! It's only rock and roll, kiddo! Glad ya like the music, and sometimes it can, and has been life-altering--but over all, as the song says: "It's only rock and roll--but we like it!' So enjoy it for that, let it move you in whatever way it does...and it has for me for over 60+ years, as have most other genres and styles--but don't make more of it than it is...great, terrible, and all stations along the tracks! Oh, and I'd seen Santana and Carlos solo myself four times over five decades. Outstanding guitarist in rock and soul players. And "Mountain" once at their peek and West could bring it! But , they, like so many others, say--and rightly so...no one touches: Jeff Beck!!
